  • Multi-access services and platforms
Imperl, Bojan ; Novak, Uroš, 1974-
The paper addresses the area of Multi-Access technology, which opens new horizons for users of the telecomm or Internet networks in accessing the rich content of Internet or information stored on the ... systems of the network operators. It allows the end-users to access the information or services at any time, from anywhere and over any device (mobile phone, notebooks or desktop computers, PDA, Info-terminals, etc) or channel (SMS, WAP, Web, Voice, etc). This way, the end-user is free to choose the favorite access channel or favorite access device for specific type of information or service, or to use any available device or channel in a specific situation. At the other side, Multi-Access Concept allows the service or content provider a fast and efficient way of developing and deploying new services based on the principle "one application for all channels and devices". Using the Multi-Access technology, the service providers will be relieved of the need for the expertise in technologies related to the underlying networking platforms or systems and will be able to focus strictly on the content itself. The Multi-Access technology bases on the integration of different advanced standards and technologies (XML, XHTML, VoiceXML, Parlay/OSA, JAIN, etc.) and on interoperability among different networks. The Multi-Access is one of the technologies that will play the crucial role in the development of all types of services (voice services, location based services, messaging, mobile Internet, "Infotainment", etc.) in the 3G environment. The paper describes the Multi-Access Concept from the end-user's as well as from the service provider's point of view. It discusses the technical issues related to the platforms enabling the implementation of the Multi-Access services and presents the general features of the Multi-Access platform architecture and the design and function of some of the components that are specific for the development of the Multi-Access Services in the telecommunication environment.
