A fracture mechanics model for the wear of gear teeth flanks by pittingFajdiga, Gorazd ; Glodež, Srečko ; Flašker, JožeIn modern industry, the designer is commonly restricted by the requirement that mechanical elements should carry high loads at high speed with size and weight kept to a minimum. For such ... applications, predicting the componet operational failure becomes crucial for ensuring an adequate design. Mechanical elements subjected to rolling and sliding contact conditions fail by several mechanisms, the most prominent of them being surface pitting. The mechanism of pitting caused by rolling/sliding contact is analysed using the fracture mechanics approach. The governing factors are the initial crack length, crack angle, contact pressure with EHD-lubrication conditions, tangential loading due to friction between the contacting surfaces, moving contact conditions, residual stresses due to heat treatment of the material and the hydraulic pressure of trapped fluid acting on the crack surface. The virtual crack extension (VCE) method, implemented in the FEM is then used for simulating the fatigue crack propagation from the initial crack up to the formation of the surface pit. The model is applied to a real pitting problem of a gear and corresponding computational results in terms of pit sizes correlate well to the developemnt of micro pits observed in experimental testing.Vir: Advanced computational engineering mechanics : proceedings of the 1.
