  • Tools enabling creation of GRIDs
Kamišalić Latifić, Aida ; Welzer-Družovec, Tatjana ; Riaňo, David
GRlD technology is a new emerging computation paradigm that combines distributed computers to solve a time-consuming problems using idle computing cycles. It is an evoloving area of computing, where ... standards and technology are still being developed to enable this new paradigm. In the paper, we outline the overview of five major application classes for GRIDs and relations between currently strands of Internet development. The Globus Toolkit is an open architecture, open source software toolkit which facilitates the creation of GRIDs. The majority of the early GRlD developments have focused on enhancing computation. But, access to distributed data is typically as important as access to distributed computational resources. From an application perspective, there are two types of GRIDs: computational GRlD and data GRlD. Considering these two types of GRIDs we outline Globus Toolkit main components that relate to GRlD architecture (GSI, MDS, GRIS, GIIS, GRAM),and describe characteristics and reasons for introducing GRlD FTP, Replica Catalog and Replica Management to Globus Toolkit.
