  • Ultrasound assisted degradation kinetics of textile azo dyes in aqueous solutions
Vajnhandl, Simona ; Majcen Le Marechal, Alenka ; Brodnjak-Vončina, Darinka
Textile azo dyes belong to the largest class of dyes used in textile and paper industry. Azo dyes cause serious environmental concern due to their resistance to aerobic degradation, however, under ... anaerobic conditions, aromatic amines are formed which are colourless but toxic and potentially carcinogenic. In accordance to achieve total degradation and mineralization of azo dyes various advanced oxidation processes are exploiting. Ultrasound is an example of advanced oxidation process and it is an excellent tool for enhancement of chemical reactions, promotion of mass transfer and production of free radicals. Decolouration kinetic of aqueous solutions of reactive azo dye using power ultrasound was investigated. The influence of the initial concentrations, pH of the medium and addition of radical promoters such as hydrogen peroxide and Fe 2+ on the decomposition of dyes was studied.
