  • The modern race car suspension [Elektronski vir]
    Pehan, Stanislav ; Kegl, Breda
The paper presents the early development stages of a racing car. The car is an open wheeler which looks like a formula-one racing car, but it is shorter. The boundary conditions are prescribed by the ... Formula SAE and Formula Student regulations prepared for designing the student racing car. In the design development stage, all efforts are focussed on weight reduction of the car and its good behaviour. Special attention is devoted to the design of the suspension system because it greatly affects the behaviour of the car. Two complementary design approcahes are considered. The first one takes into account the theoretical backgound of suspension systems which basically deal with the influences of side and front view instant centre positions. Different instant centre positions in the cross section and in the longitudinal direction are determined and the behaviour of the car is discussed. At the end, the role of the position of the vehicle roll axle is analysed. The second approach consists of efferts aiming to master numerous geometrical constraints, which mainly includes the study of forms, shapes, dimensions, positions and the possible movement of the suspension and steering components. The final goal is that our stdents make a racing car. The paper describes the dilemmas and problems occuring when a real racing car is made in the university environment.
