  • Improved modelling of automotive fuel tank under impact conditions [Elektronski vir]
    Vesenjak, Matej ...
In recent years computational models in the automotive industry have improved rapidly. Quick growth of computer capabilities and its speedups make it possible to model vehicles in greater details. ... Therefore, many simplificationsof the past have to be reevaluated and remodeled to obtain moreaccurate results. The old fuel tank models accounted for fuel only with fixed mass nodes to consider the effect of inertia forces. However, motion of the fuel and its interaction with the structure of the fuel tank were neglected. This paper outlines different modern approaches to fuel modeling and its interaction with the tank, which are based on Lagrangian formulation, Eulerian formulation, Lagrange-Eulerian formulation (ALE) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH). These modeling approaches were evaluated and validated on a simple box under impact problem and afterwards applied to a real automotive tank geometry. Computational results clearly indicate the importance of fluid motion in the tank and its interaction with the structure. All evaluated modeling approaches proved to give good results, whichagree well with the experimental observations, and are far more superior than the old models.
