As international awareness of the importance of intangibleheritage grows, the issue of how it can be effectivelysafeguarded has been increasingly debated. In recent years, museums have been called upon to engage more withintangibles due to their shared concerns for both culture andpreservation. However, traditional museology has tended tofocus on tangible expressions of heritage as opposed tothose of an intangible, or living, nature. In response to thisdebate, the following paper brings to light five key obstaclesfacing six museums in the North East of England with regardto safeguarding intangible heritage. Uncovering theseobstacles has been achieved through an analysis of datafrom policies and documents, observation and in-depthinterviews with professionals holding high levels ofresponsibility within these institutions. It is argued thatthese key obstacles, including the perceptions, efforts andlimitations on which they are based, can negatively affect theeffectiveness of safeguarding approaches with respect tointangible heritage.
