The terms and ‘variety of silk’ frequently appear in the letters of the Venetian merchant Andrea Berengo written in 1555/1556. The etymon is not Persian ‘raw silk’, but the name of the city of / (with the nisba adjective ) in central Azerbaijan which was located on the Silk Road and is still known in modern times for its silk production.
