    Highlights • Galectins can function both extracellularly and intracellularly. • Galectins can bind to the surfaces of some pathogens and products released by the pathogens. • Intracellularly, galectins can bind to glycans in the cytosol, including host glycans displayed on the ruptured membranes of endosomes.
