A liquid decontamination system comprises a cavitation device comprising a rotor and a stator. The stator comprises a first disc which comprises a plurality of first protrusions which are distributed ...across a first surface of the first disc and the rotor comprises a second disc which comprises a plurality of second protrusions which are distributed across a second surface of the second disc. The first surface and the second surface are facing each other and are spaced apart from each other, and a center axis of the stator is aligned with a rotational axis of the rotor. At least one and preferably all of the first protrusions are spaced apart from the second protrusions in a radial direction of the first disc. The system further comprises a fluid pump with an inlet and an outlet to pump a liquid through the cavitation device, wherein, during an intended use of the system, the first and second surfaces are in contact with the liquid.
