The aim of this research is to establish whether pregnant women know the importance and function of pelvic floor muscles and their exercising, whether and how often they do pelvic floor muscles ...exercises and what are the results of such exercising. The research included a random sample of 70 pregnant women who fulfilled a questionnaire of 22 variables. Data has been processed by the SPSS software package, calculating the frequencies. We have established that the majority of women (91%) have heard of the pelvic floor muscles. However, the percentage of those who knew the location of these muscles and their primary function was much lower (two thirds). Similarly, there were fewer women - about three quarters - who knew the importance and function of pelvic muscles exercising. The results indicate that only one half of pregnant women exercise the pelvic floor muscles, and only one quarter of all the women questioned exercise these muscles daily. As many as three quarters of pregnant women did not notice any changes as a result of exercising pelvic floor muscles, which may be the result of irregular and often possibly also incorrect exercising. The number of pregnant women who are aware of the importance and function of the pelvic floor muscles and their exercising is considerably too low, which by all means is a consequence of not being well and adequately informed in this area. The problem of urinary incontinence or urine leakage, which is often a consequence of weak pelvic floor muscles, should be introduced to a wider audience, primarily to pregnant women, and make them understand that this is a problem we can have influence on and can even supresses it when regularly, strenuously and correctly exercising the pelvic floor muscles.
