Slovenska dramatika in oblast - nasprotnika ali zaveznika?

In addressing the articulation of authority and its relationship to art in Slovene drama and theatre, we could speak about two issues: the question, on the one hand, of how dramatic texts portray a ...certain system of authority and,on the other, of what the actual relationship is between the authorities and drama - the latter term comprising, in this case, all participants in the creation of theatrical productions. The nature of this relationship strongly marked the image and development of Slovene drama after World War II, and therefore I place it at the centre of the present paper. My hypothesis is that a delicate balance existed in the stated period between the authorities and drama, which facilitated their coexistence despite apparently opposing visions. Moreover, this balance enabled drama to become an extremely importantsocial factor and to attain a high level of popularity and financial support from the authorities. This, in turn, prompted drama's most exceptionalblossoming. The hypothesis is illustrated with several concrete examples. Finally, I open the question of the crisis of political engagement in Slovene drama after 1991. The change of the social system radically alteredthe relationship between the authorities and drama, as the latter lost its social status and thus found itself in a crisis from which it has yet to find a way out.
