This study has been conducted to examine the characteristics of the public sphere created by public art through the < Cultural Prosthetics > series of Krzystof Wodiczko. The analysis has been focused on the ‘artist-user’ and ‘user-local community’ introduced in the < Cultural Prosthetics > series of Wodiczko. When this work has been opened, the public art has been carried out through the discussion from ‘site’ to ‘community’. Public art is also positively evaluated in that it plays a role in restoring local identity and inspiring bonds. However on the other hand, it can be a tool to solidify and conceal the existing unbalanced social structure. The < Cultural Prosthetics > series provides an alternative for such a problem by which the public art can face. His works doubt the fixed identity of the community constantly and create the structure in which differences are attempted to be sealed for unification. The ‘Homeless Vehicle Project’ and Poliscar create the physical residing space and the communication channel to the society for the homeless. Further, the ‘Alien Staff’ and ‘The Mouthpiece’ reduce the physical distance from the opponent in order to open the possibility for horizontal communication. In addition, the ‘Egis’ and ‘Veteran’s Helmet’ ask the role of community through healing the psychological wound of the user. The < Cultural Prosthetics > series attempts to amplify the functions of eyes, ear and mouth of the minorities, those who have been expelled to the outside, physically in order to return them as members of the society. The public sphere created by the works of Wodiczko is expanded passing through the processes of meeting, conversation and persuasion. The voices and videos edited by the artist deliver a message for social change, crossing between legality and illegality, purposely or coincidentally, sometimes. In addition, such processes last irrespective of the completion of the works. The researcher of this study attempts to check a new possibility the public art through his work which seeks an open structure.
The purpose of this research is to analyze the intertextuality manifested in the postproduction of Nicolas Bourriaud. The research method starts with the imitation and appropriation of images as a starting point, follows the major trends of appropriation in art history, and analyzes the structure of meaning formed in the process through allegory and intertextual characteristics. Furthermore, it examines the similarities between the forms and methodologies of postproduction and appropriation in traditional art. Subsequently, the intertextual characteristics found in postproduction as appropriation are analyzed, with a focus on the works of Rirkrit Tiravanija and Daniel Pflumm introduced by Bourriaud in his book “Postproduction.” Bourriaud claims that the practice of appropriating existing artworks’ images and forms has been found in numerous art practices since the 1990s. With the world tightly connected through the internet, the sense of spatial and temporal distance is transformed into the diversity of available cultural products through contemporary internet space. Artists using postproduction methodologies create their works by listing, editing, and recombining images and forms, much like a DJ manipulates DJing software. The image usage method, which has left rich precedents in art history, plays an important role as a methodology in postproduction as well. In other words, appropriation in postproduction simultaneously acts as a means of constructing form and weaving a textual structure of multiple meanings by appending images and forms to the artwork. Therefore, the necessity of this research lies in reaffirming the role of appropriation in contemporary art based on postproduction, which shows differences from conventional appropriation methods, and confirming the intertextual characteristics and roles of postproduction through specific cases. Tiravanija and Pflumm accept the editing style of non-material narratives and DJing, expanding the pathways of contact in their works and thereby creating multidimensional meanings through intertextual characteristics.
The purpose of this study is to find the possibility of the public sphere created by public art by looking into Krzysztof Wodiczko’ art works. Today, all things change fast. In this circumstance, conflicts between social members are on the constant rise. This researcher considers public art to play a role as the public sphere for finding causes of these conflicts and resolving them. In particular, it is considered that Krzysztof’s two artwork series discussed in this study show the possibility of public art. As for the research method, the process of the public art changing from physical placeness to the area of public value is analyzed in temporal order. In particular, through the process of connecting to Hans Haacke, Act Up, and Richard Serra, the post-material and activism-oriented direction of the current public art is analyzed. In addition, the possibility of the public sphere defined by Jürgen Habermas is looked into on the basis of Wodiczko’ artworks. < Series of Projections > are the artworks of projecting the images showing implicit ideologies of visible and invisible structures after buildings or moments with social issues and timeliness are selected. < Instruments, Transportation Project >, which was created to overcome temporal and spacial limits, was aimed at communicating directly with urban citizens through the instruments designed together with the socially disadvantaged homeless and aliens. In conclusion, the influence of Wodiczko’s work is summarized as possession of public space, activism, and critical public sphere. Wodiczko goes beyond the diverse collection and consensus of members of society, converting previously unseen socially disadvantaged people who failed to get attention and their opinions into visible forms. The public sphere generated in this work process expands to artists, participants, ordinary space users, and then to the entire community, and remains regardless of the completion of the artwork. Through his artwork pursuing an open structure, it is possible to find the possibility of public art.
