Abstract Colistin is a cyclic decapeptide bound to a fatty acid chain. It is active against many Gram-negative bacteria by destabilising the bacterial outer membrane. Bacteria can become resistant to ...colistin by modification of their lipopolysaccharide, thereby reducing the affinity of polymyxins. Colistin is often administered orally in poultry and pig production to control colibacillosis. Resistant isolates are sometimes recovered from pathological cases, particularly in piglets. However, in Europe the percentage of resistance to colistin in Escherichia coli strains isolated from the digestive tract microbiota of healthy animals remains <1%.
Context. Direct imaging of debris discs gives important information about their nature, their global morphology, and allows us to identify specific structures possibly in connection with the presence ...of gravitational perturbers. It is the most straightforward technique to observe planetary systems as a whole. Aims. We present the first resolved images of the debris disc around the young F-type star HD 160305, detected in scattered light using the VLT/SPHERE instrument in the near infrared. Methods. We used a post-processing method based on angular differential imaging and synthetic images of debris discs produced with a disc modelling code (GRaTer) to constrain the main characteristics of the disc around HD 160305. All of the point sources in the field of the IRDIS camera were analysed with an astrometric tool to determine whether they are bound objects or background stars. Results. We detect a very inclined (~82°) ring-like debris disc located at a stellocentric distance of about 86 au (deprojected width ~27 au). The disc displays a brightness asymmetry between the two sides of the major axis, as can be expected from scattering properties of dust grains. We derive an anisotropic scattering factor g > 0.5. A second right-left asymmetry is also observed with respect to the minor axis. We measure a surface brightness ratio of 0.73 ± 0.18 between the bright and the faint sides. Because of the low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the images we cannot easily discriminate between several possible explanations for this left-right asymmetry, such as perturbations by an unseen planet, the aftermath of the breakup of a massive planetesimal, or the pericenter glow effect due to an eccentric ring. Two epochs of observations allow us to reject the companionship hypothesis for the 15 point sources present in the field.
This work deals with food loss in the French production chains of fruits, vegetables and potato. The study focuses on nine products representative of the diversity of product categories, production ...systems and final uses. Potential losses are distributed all along the production chain, in the farmer’s field or orchard up to retail and vary according to the type of product, being comprised between 5 % and more than 20 % overall. For fruits and vegetables as a whole, food loss represents approximately 12 % of the production being ready for harvest in the field or the orchard. Three quarters of these losses are observed at the upstream stages of the chain, from harvest to marketing. These are mainly due to high sensitivity of fruits and vegetables to sanitary problems and unfavorable weather conditions, high perishability, and non-conformity to regulations or to demanding commercial specifications. Food losses at distribution stage (wholesalers and retailers) represent the remaining quarter. They are mainly due to handling of highly fragile commodities with limited shelf-live, and over-ripening problems due to inappropriate stock management. Discarded products are mostly spread on fields, and occasionally directed to anaerobic digestion units. In order to decrease food loss or make better use of it though recycling, several types of action can be considered at different steps of the production chain, with possible support from research projects and/or of public policy.

Des pertes alimentaires potentielles apparaissent tout au long de ces filières, de la parcelle du producteur à l’étal du distributeur, et peuvent être plus ou moins importantes selon les produits (d’environ 5% à plus de 20%). Elles représentent globalement pour l’ensemble des fruits et des légumes 12% de la production disponible au champ. Les trois quarts de ces pertes sont constatés aux premières étapes de la filière, de la récolte à la mise en marché. Leurs principales causes sont la sensibilité des produits aux aléas sanitaires et climatiques, leur périssabilité, l’application de normes règlementaires ou de cahiers des charges exigeants. Les pertes aux stades de la distribution (grossistes et détaillants) représentent le quart restant ; elles sont principalement dues à la manipulation de produits très périssables et surtout à des problèmes de surmaturité liés en partie à une gestion inappropriée des stocks. Ces produits écartés de ces filières sont en majorité épandus dans les parcelles agricoles, et plus occasionnellement orientés vers des plateformes de méthanisation. Pour réduire ou mieux valoriser ces pertes alimentaires, plusieurs leviers d’action peuvent être envisagés à différents niveaux de ces filières, avec pour certaines d’entre elles l’appui de la Recherche et/ou un soutien des politiques publiques.

The present study describes the atmospheric component of the sixth‐generation climate models of the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM), namely, ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3. It builds up on ...more than a decade of model development and tuning efforts, which led to major updates of its moist physics. The vertical resolution has also been significantly increased, both in the boundary layer and in the stratosphere. ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3 is now coupled to the new version (8.0) of the SURFace EXternalisée (SURFEX) surface model, in which several new features (e.g., floodplains, aquifers, and snow processes) improve the water cycle realism. The model calibration is discussed in depth. An amip‐type experiment, in which the sea surface temperatures and sea ice concentrations are prescribed, and following the CMIP6 protocol, is extensively evaluated, in terms of climate mean state and variability. ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3 is shown to improve over its previous version (5.1) by many climate features. Major improvements include the top‐of‐atmosphere and surface energy budgets in their various components (shortwave and longwave, total and clear sky), cloud cover, near‐surface temperature, precipitation climatology and daily‐mean distribution, and water discharges at the outlet of major rivers. In contrast, clouds over subtropical stratocumulus decks, several dynamical variables (sea level pressure, 500‐hPa geopotential height), are still significantly biased. The tropical intraseasonal variability and diurnal cycle of precipitation, though improved, remained area of concerns for further model improvement. New biases also emerge, such as a lack of precipitation over several tropical continental areas. Within the CMIP6 context, ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3 is the atmospheric component of CNRM‐CM6‐1 and CNRM‐ESM2‐1.

Since the early 1990s, the Centre National de Recherches Météorologiques (CNRM) has been developing a global atmosphere model for climate applications. The present work presents its latest version, ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3, as prepared for the sixth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6). It builds up on more than a decade of model development and tuning efforts. A CMIP6 amip‐type numerical experiment, in which the sea surface temperatures and sea ice concentrations are prescribed, is evaluated, in terms of climate mean state and variability. ARPEGE‐Climat 6.3 is shown to have better or similar skills compared to its previous version and to rank rather high among CMIP5 state‐of‐the‐art models by many mean‐state metrics. Major improvements include the top‐of‐atmosphere and surface energy budgets, cloud cover, near‐surface temperature, precipitation climatology and daily‐mean distribution, and water discharges at the outlet of major rivers. In contrast, clouds over the eastern part of ocean basins, and a few dynamical variables, such as sea level pressure, are still significantly biased. New biases also emerge, such as a lack of precipitation over several tropical continental areas. The remaining and new biases call for further understanding, especially whether they arise from calibration issues or model structural limits.

ED-visits and through-ED admissions to medical/surgical wards (MSW) and intensive care unit (ICU) during influenza, COVID-19 and lockdown periods were evaluated in a four-hospital prospective ...observational study from November 2018 to March 2020. ED visit characteristics and main diagnostic categories were assessed. Analysis of 368,262 ED-visits highlighted a significantly increasing trend in ED-visits during influenza followed by a significantly decreasing trend after lockdown. For MSW-admissions, a pattern of growth during influenza was followed by a fall that began during COVID-19 pandemic and intensified during the lockdown. For ICU-admissions, a significant rise during the COVID-19 pandemic was followed by diminution during the lockdown period. During lockdown, significantly diminishing trends were shown for all diagnostic categories (between -40.8% and -73.6%), except influenza-like illness/COVID cases (+31.6%), Pulmonary embolism/deep vein thrombosis (+33.5%) and frequent users (+188.0%). The present study confirms an increase in demand during the influenza epidemic and during the initial phase of the COVID-19 epidemic, but a drop in activity during the lockdown, mainly related to non-COVID conditions. Syndromic surveillance of ILI cases in ED is a tool for monitoring influenza and COVID-19, and it can predict ED activity and the need for MSW and ICU beds.
Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is only possible if molecular markers are easy to handle and informative. In potato, a tetraploid and highly heterozygous species, SAM is poorly developed. In our ...study we developed two approaches: 1) search for molecular markers linked to traits of interest in diploid segregating populations and test of their transferability at the tetraploid level and 2) test of molecular markers that have already been published in different tetraploid genetic backgrounds. The targeted traits were resistance to pathogens (late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans, cyst nematodes Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida, virus Y) and glycoalkaloid content in tubers. In the case of a monogenic control (like resistance to late blight conferred by the R1 gene originating from Solanum demissum or the resistance to the Y virus conferred by the Ry gene originating from S. stoloniferum), the published markers have been validated in different genetic backgrounds. For the H1 gene conferring resistance to G. rostochiensis, markers available at the time of the project were not found to be associated with resistance in our material but other markers have since been validated. In the case of oligogenic resistance, illustrated by the resistance to G. pallida, which is controlled by two QTL, markers flanking the large effect QTL GpaVspl were tested successfully in different diploid and tetraploid backgrounds. Two markers linked to the low effect QTL GpaXIspl were also validated. These markers were transferred to the French breeders who are now using them in their breeding programs. For polygenic quantitative traits (partial resistance to late blight and glycoalkaloid content), it seems not realistic to consider SAM for the moment.
La sélection assistée par marqueurs (SAM) n’est possible que si les marqueurs moléculaires sont facilement utilisables et informatifs. Chez la pomme de terre, espèce tétraploïde et hétérozygote, la SAM est encore assez peu développée pour le moment. Notre démarche a été, d’une part, de rechercher des marqueurs moléculaires liés à des caractères d’intérêt à partir de populations diploïdes en ségrégation et de tester leur transférabilité au niveau tétraploïde et, d’autre part, de tester des marqueurs moléculaires déjà publiés dans des fonds génétiques tétraploïdes différents. Les modèles retenus étaient la résistance aux bioagresseurs (le mildiou du feuillage causé par Phytophthora infestans, la résistance aux nématodes à kyste Globodera rostochiensis et G. pallida, la résistance au virus Y) et la teneur en glycoalcaloïdes des tubercules. Dans le cas d’un déterminisme génétique simple (cas du gène Ry conférant la résistance au virus Y issu de Solanum stoloniferum ou du gène R1 de résistance au mildiou issu de S. demissum), les marqueurs publiés ont pu être validés dans différents fonds génétiques. Pour le gène H1 conférant la résistance à G. rostochiensis, le marqueur disponible au moment du projet s’est avéré ne pas être lié à la résistance dans notre matériel mais d’autres marqueurs ont été validés depuis. Dans le cas d’une résistance oligogénique, illustrée par la résistance à G. pallida dont le déterminisme génétique est sous le contrôle de 2 QTL, la portabilité de 4 marqueurs permettant de suivre le QTL à effet fort GpaVspl dans différents fonds génétiques tétraploïdes a été testée. Deux marqueurs permettant de suivre le QTL à effet faible GpaXIspl ont également été validés. L’ensemble des marqueurs a été transféré aux partenaires professionnels qui les utilisent désormais à des échelles différentes dans leurs schémas de sélection. Pour les caractères à déterminisme polygénique (résistance au mildiou du feuillage et teneur en glycoalcaloïdes), il semble actuellement prématuré d’envisager la SAM.
