Teaching English provides the possibility for raising students’ awareness of global issues. By bringing relevant global issues into the classroom, teachers can provide students a rich array of ...activities and topics that increase their engagement with diverse cultures, issues of local as well as global importance. This study explored the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals in English language and literature teaching in a state university laboratory school in the Philippines. It focused on the learning experiences and feedback of pre-service teachers and junior high school students on the integration. The phenomenological research design, the interview and focus group discussion were utilized. For a concise description of themes and patterns relevant to the phenomenon, thematic analysis was done after the data gathering. Four dominant themes were revealed in the learning experiences of the teaching interns during the study: Designing for Concrete Action; Applying the Interdisciplinary and Contextualized Approach; Nurturing a Participatory Attitude; and Fostering Personal Accountability. The feedback of the learners on the SDG integration included themes such as Empowerment to Take Initiative, Gaining Meaningful Learning, and Developing a Whole-School Approach. The Integration of SDGs in the English classroom provided a range of benefits for both pre-service teachers and students. Students were given the tools to expand their learning and develop the capacity to proactively address a variety of problems. They were encouraged to view these issues as their own, fostering a sense of ownership and purpose, rather than merely striving for knowledge and comprehension.
Passing the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) is a major requirement for graduates to be accepted to teach in the Department of Education (DepEd). The holistic preparation ...of these teachers determines how well they perform in the field. This study investigated the relationship between the beginning teachers’ performance in the licensure examination and their results-based performance management system rating. The descriptive-correlational research design was used in this study. The data were systematically obtained from 2,680 teachers representing the 17 regions in the Philippines through a researcher-made survey instrument administered online from May to July 2022. Means and standard deviations described the BLET and RPMS performances. At the same time, hierarchical regression, path, and effect analyses were used to determine the impact of BLET performance, teaching experience, and college preparation on teaching performance. The beginning teachers with BEEd, BSEd, and DPE degrees received satisfactory BLEPT performance and a very satisfactory RPMS performance. Furthermore, the performance in General Education, Professional Education, and Specialization components predicted the RPMS performance of teachers who graduated from the BSEd degree program. College preparation impacted RPMS performance, while teaching experience in private and public schools showed different impacts in their teaching. Finally, the findings of this study show that the BLET performance of teachers impacts the RPMS ratings; hence, licensure exam results can predict teachers’ performance in public schools. The quality of teacher preparation influences the preservice teachers’ performance in the board licensure examination for professional teachers. Hence, it is recommended that teacher education institutions intensify their measures in preparing preservice teachers to pass the board licensure examination for professional teachers.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo é identificar fatores associados à continuidade da amamentação por 12 meses ou mais em mulheres trabalhadoras. Estudo transversal realizado por meio de entrevista com ...251 trabalhadoras de um hospital, com filhos biológicos entre 12 e 36 meses de idade, não gemelares e sem doença que afetasse a amamentação, e amamentando quando do seu retorno ao trabalho. Para a associação entre a continuidade da amamentação e as variáveis de exposição utilizou-se a regressão multivariável de Poisson. Apenas uma variável relacionada ao local de trabalho da mulher mostrou associação significativa com o desfecho. Trabalhar durante o dia aumentou em 37% a prevalência da amamentação por 12 meses ou mais. Os fatores não relacionados ao trabalho da mulher que mostraram associação positiva com o desfecho: mãe sem curso superior, experiência de amamentação superior a 12 meses; criança não receber outro leite quando a mãe retornou ao trabalho e não ter usado chupeta. Por outro lado, maior idade da mãe, maior idade gestacional, apoio do cuidador da criança e apoio profissional na amamentação associaram-se negativamente ao desfecho. Fatores não relacionados diretamente ao trabalho materno tiveram maior participação na continuidade da amamentação por 12 meses ou mais.
Abstract This article aims to identify factors associated with breastfeeding continuation for at least 12 months among working mothers in a hospital in the south of Brazil. We conducted a cross-sectional study, interviewing 251 women who breastfed after returning to work. Eligibility criteria included non-twin biological children aged between 12 and 36 months and the absence of an illness (mother and/or child) that could affect breastfeeding. The association between breastfeeding continuation and the exposure variables was tested using Poisson multivariate regression. Only one work-related variable showed a significant association with the outcome. Working only during the day increased the prevalence of BF continuation for at least 12 months by 37%. The following non-work-related factors showed a positive association with the outcome: mothers without a college degree; mothers with at least 12 months’ prior breastfeeding experience; child not given milks other than breast milk when the mother returned to work, and not using a pacifier. The following variables showed a negative association with the outcome: older maternal age; older gestational age; mother receiving support from the child’s caregiver; and mother receiving professional breastfeeding support. Non-work-related factors had a greater influence on breastfeeding continuation for at least 12 months among working mothers.
Abstract Background Assessment of the pathological characteristics of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours is crucial for appropriate management. We compared preoperative pathological data with surgical ...specimens for accuracy. Methods Surgical patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours who underwent preoperative endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the primary tumour or biopsy of liver metastasis were retrospectively included. Tumour differentiation and the Ki67 proliferation index on biopsies were compared with pancreatic specimens. Results Fifty-seven patients were included. A preoperative biopsy of the primary tumour or of a liver metastasis was obtained in 48 and 9 patients respectively. Tumour differentiation was high in 98%, and poor in 2% on biopsy and high in 100% of surgical specimens. Ki67 index values were 0 (0–19) and 2 (0–15) on biopsy and surgical specimens ( p = 0.01). Correlation between preoperative and surgical findings was stronger for liver ( r = 0.62, p = 0.001) than for pancreas ( r = 0.23, p = 0.11). Correlation for pancreas varied according to the tumour pattern: solid ( r = 0.24, p = 0.16), mixed ( r = 0.91, p = 0.0036) or cystic ( r = 0.04, p = 0.89). Tumour grade was different between pancreatic biopsies and surgical specimens, for grade 1 (63% vs 37%) and grade 2 (28% vs 72%), p = 0.0007. Conclusions Tumour grade assessment is accurate in biopsies of liver metastases of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, while pancreatic fine-needle aspiration biopsies are less accurate.

This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach, aimed to identify the knowledge of puerperal women on exclusive breastfeeding. Data were collected between September-October 2011, through ...semi-structured interview. Thirteen puerperal women, interned in a rooming unit of a public institution in the city of Caxias do Sul-RS, participated in the study. Data analysis was performed using thematic analysis. From the interpretation of information three categories emerged: the knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, the breastfeeding process and the influences of received information. Even getting information from health professionals in the prenatal period, it is possible to understand that there is a need to improve communication and monitoring of mothers, as a continuity of professional care in the postpartum period, and also later, in the remote.
