Flavonoids are metabolites of plants and fungus. Flavonoid research has been paid special attention to in recent times after the observation of their beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system. ...These favorable effects are exerted by flavonoids mainly due to their antioxidant properties, which result from the ability to decrease the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins, thus improving the lipid profiles. The other positive effect exerted on the cardiovascular system is the ability of flavonoids to produce vasodilation and regulate the apoptotic processes in the endothelium. Researchers suggested that these effects, including their anti-inflammatory function, are consequences of flavonoids' potent antioxidant properties, but recent studies have shown multiple signaling pathways linked to them, thus suggesting that there are more mechanisms involved in the beneficial effect of the flavonoids on the human body. This review aims to present the latest data on the classification of these substances, their main mechanisms of action in the human body, and the beneficial effects on the physiological and pathological status of the cardiovascular system.
This review explores the emerging role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in modulating epigenetic mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases. Accumulating evidence has begun to elucidate the ...multifaceted ways in which H2S influences the epigenetic landscape and, subsequently, the progression of various neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and Huntington’s disease. H2S can modulate key components of the epigenetic machinery, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNAs, impacting gene expression and cellular functions relevant to neuronal survival, inflammation, and synaptic plasticity. We synthesize recent research that positions H2S as an essential player within this intricate network, with the potential to open new therapeutic avenues for these currently incurable conditions. Despite significant progress, there remains a considerable gap in our understanding of the precise molecular mechanisms and the potential therapeutic implications of modulating H2S levels or its downstream targets. We conclude by identifying future directions for research aimed at exploiting the therapeutic potential of H2S in neurodegenerative diseases.

The role of fibroblasts in regeneration, and the process by which the nerve reforms its three-dimensional structure after a transection injury, are not fully understood. The Hedgehog signaling pathway has been shown to mediate nerve sheath formation during development. We therefore sought to characterize the role of Hedgehog-responsive cells following transection of the facial nerve.
Two transgenic mouse lines with reporters for the downstream effector of Hedgehog signaling, Gli1, were used. The animals underwent a unilateral facial nerve transection injury, and the contralateral side served as a control. Facial nerves were analyzed via immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence at predetermined time points as the facial nerve regenerated after the transection injury.
There was a statistically significant increase in Gli1+ cells both at the site of injury and within the distal nerve segment over time. Gli1+ cells are fibroblasts within the nerve and appear to contribute to the reformation of the nerve sheath after injury.
These findings describe a key signaling pathway by which fibroblasts participate in motor nerve regeneration. Fibroblasts that reside within the nerve respond to injury and may represent a novel therapeutic target in the context of facial nerve regeneration after transection injury.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between bone mineral density and genotypes of four polymorphisms in previously detected osteoporosis-candidate genes (FDPS rs2297480, LRP5 rs3736228, SOST ...rs1234612, VKORC1 rs9934438) in postmenopausal Romanian women with primary osteoporosis.
An analytical, prospective, transversal, observational, case-control study on 364 postmenopausal Romanian women was carried out between June 2016 and August 2017 in Cluj Napoca, Romania. Clinical data and blood samples were collected from all study participants. Four polymorphisms were genotyped using TaqMan SNP Genotyping assays, run on a QuantStudio 3 real-time PCR machine.
Women with TT genotype in FDPS rs2297480 had significantly lower bone mineral density values in the lumbar spine and total hip, and the presence of the T allele was significantly associated with the osteoporosis. Women carrying the CC genotype in LRP5 rs3736228 tend to have lower bone mineral density values in the femoral neck and total hip. No significant association was found for the genotypes of SOST rs1234612 or VKORC1 rs9934438.
Our study showed a strong association between bone mineral density and polymorphisms in the FDPS gene, and a borderline association with LRP5 and SOST polymorphisms in postmenopausal Romanian women with osteoporosis. No association was found for VKORC1.
Abundant experimental data suggest that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is related to the pathophysiology of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Multiple molecular mechanisms, including receptors, membrane ion channels, ...signalingmolecules, enzymes, and transcription factors, are known to be responsible for the H2S biological actions; however, H2S is not fully documented as a gaseous signaling molecule interfering with DM and vascular-linked pathology. In recent decades, multiple approaches regarding therapeutic exploitation of H2S have been identified, either based on H2S exogenous apport or on its modulated endogenous biosynthesis. This paper aims to synthesize and systematize, as comprehensively as possible, the recent literature-related data regarding the therapeutic/rehabilitative role of H2S in DM. This review was conducted following the “Preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses” (PRISMA) methodology, interrogating five international medically renowned databases by specific keyword combinations/“syntaxes” used contextually, over the last five years (2017–2021). The respective search/filtered and selection methodology we applied has identified, in the first step, 212 articles. After deploying the next specific quest steps, 51 unique published papers qualified for minute analysis resulted. To these bibliographic resources obtained through the PRISMA methodology, in order to have the best available information coverage, we added 86 papers that were freely found by a direct internet search. Finally, we selected for a connected meta-analysis eight relevant reports that included 1237 human subjects elicited from clinical trial registration platforms. Numerous H2S releasing/stimulating compounds have been produced, some being used in experimental models. However, very few of them were further advanced in clinical studies, indicating that the development of H2S as a therapeutic agent is still at the beginning.
Background. The medical relevance of therapeutic gases can range from use in burns and stroke victims to hypoxia therapy in children. However, medical gases such as oxygen, hydrogen, helium and xenon ...have recently come under increased exploration for their potential therapeutic use on various brain disease states, including traumatic brain injuries, hypoxia-ischemia and, cerebral hemorrhages. Objective. This synthetic review aims to rigorously select related articles and identify within their content the main possible uses of therapeutic gases and physiological mechanisms. The objective of this article is to present the various therapeutic mechanisms that have been proposed in the current literature and the medical relevance of various therapeutic gases used in balneotherapy or medical rehabilitation. Methods. To elaborate our synthesis review, we have searched for relevant open access articles in 6 international databases: Cochrane, Elsevier, NCBI/PubMed, NCBI/PMC, PEDro, and ISI Web of Knowledge/Science, published from January 2011 until December 2020. The contextually quested keywords combinations/ syntaxes used specified on this page. The eligible articles were analyzed in detail regarding pathologies addressed by therapeutic gases. All articles with any design (reviews, randomized controlled trials, non-randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, cross-sectional studies), if eligible according to the above-mentioned selection methodology, containing in the title or abstract the above-mentioned combinations, were included in the analysis. Articles were excluded in the second phase if they did not reach the relevance criterion. Results. Our search identified, first, 225 articles. After eliminating the duplicates, remained 180 articles. In the second phase, we applied a relevance criterion. Although our team - including the authors of this paper – have quite long and consistent expertise in achieving systematic literature reviews, the marked heterogeneity of both the item composing the subject we have approached and inherently the wase of presentations in the respective quite vast and diverse domain of medical gases, prevented us to fulfil, at least regarding this initial work, a systematic literature review. Instead, we succeeded to make a hopefully interesting and valuable narrative synthetic-related literature review. At the end of the second phase, 63 articles passed the relevance criterion and were included in this synthetic review. Conclusions. Therapeutic gases are not fully understood and used adequately for sanogenic or medical purposes. More research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms and importance of therapeutic gases. The link between balneotherapy and medical rehabilitation regarding the usage of therapeutical gases emphasises the unity for this medical speciality. Curcumin (CC) is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties and has already been tested for its efficiency in different diseases including diabetes mellitus (DM). New formulations ...and route administration were designed to obtain products with higher bioavailability. Our study aimed to test the effect of intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of liposomal curcumin (lCC) as pre-treatment in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced DM in rats on oxidative stress, liver, and pancreatic functional parameters. Forty-two Wistar-Bratislava rats were randomly divided into six groups (seven animals/group): control (no diabetes), control-STZ (STZ-induced DM -60 mg/100g body weight a single dose intraperitoneal administration, and no CC pre-treatment), two groups with DM and CC pre-treatment (1mg/100g bw-STZ + CC1, 2 mg/100g bw-STZ + CC2), and two groups with DM and lCC pre-treatment (1 mg/100g bw-STZ + lCC1, 2 mg/100g bw-STZ + lCC1). Intraperitoneal administration of Curcumin in diabetic rats showed a significant reduction of nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, total oxidative stress, and catalase for both evaluated formulations (CC and lCC) compared to control group (
< 0.005), with higher efficacy of lCC formulation compared to CC solution (
< 0.002, excepting catalase for STZ + CC2vs. STZ + lCC1when
= 0.0845). The CC and lCC showed hepatoprotective and hypoglycemic effects, a decrease in oxidative stress and improvement in anti-oxidative capacity status against STZ-induced DM in rats (
< 0.002). The lCC also proved better efficacy on MMP-2, and -9 plasma levels as compared to CC (
< 0.003, excepting STZ + CC2 vs. STZ + lCC1 comparison with
= 0.0553). The lCC demonstrated significantly better efficacy as compared to curcumin solution on all serum levels of the investigated markers, sustaining its possible use as adjuvant therapy in DM.

Biomimetic coating was successfully developed using multi-substituted hydroxyapatite (ms-HAP) functionalized with collagen (ms-HAP/COL), embedded into poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix (ms-HAP/COL@PLA), and subsequently covered with self-assembled COL layer (ms-HAP/COL@PLA/COL, named HAPc).
For in vivo evaluation, 32 Wistar albino rats were used in four groups: control group (CG) with Ti implant; PESW group with Ti implant+HF-PESW; HAPc group with Ti implant coated with HAPc; HAPc+PESW group with Ti implant coated with HAPc+HF-PESW. Left femoral diaphysis was fractured and fixed intramedullary. From the first post-operative day, PESW and HAPc+PESW groups underwent HF-PESW stimulation for 14 consecutive days. Biomimetic coating was characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, SEM, EDX and AFM.
Osteogenic markers (ALP and osteocalcin) and micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis (especially bone volume/tissue volume ratio results) indicated at 2 weeks the following group order: HAPc+PESW>HAPc≈PESW (
>0.05) and HAPc+PESW>control (
<0.05), indicating the higher values in HAPc+PESW group compared to CG. The fracture-site bone strength showed, at 2 weeks, the highest average value in HAPc+PESW group. Moreover, histological analysis revealed the most abundant COL fibers assembled in dense bundles in HAPc-PESW group. At 8 weeks, micro-CT indicated higher values only in HAPc+PESW group vs CG (
<0.05), and histological results showed a complete-healed fracture in groups: HAPc+PESW, HAPc and PESW, but with more advanced bone remodeling in HAPc+PESW group.
Using Ti implants coated by HAPc jointly with HF-PESW stimulation positively influenced the bone consolidation process, especially in its early phase, thus potentially providing a superior strategy for clinical applications.

All patients undergoing middle cranial fossa or retrosigmoid craniotomy for VS at a single institution from September 2013 to January 2017 were screened.Hearing was graded according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) hearing classification. Inclusion criteria included preoperative AAO-HNS class A or B hearing and available preoperative and postoperative FLAIR sequences.
Signal intensity of cochlear FLAIR signal was measured in the affected cochlea and normalized to the contralateral cochlea. Hearing preservation was defined as AAO-HNS class A or B postoperatively.
Eighteen patients met all inclusion criteria, and 12/18 experienced hearing preservation. There was no difference in preoperative FLAIR ratio between hearing preserved and nonpreserved groups (2.02 vs 2.32, p = 0.52). Postoperatively, FLAIR ratio was lower in the hearing preserved group compared to the nonpreserved group (1.19 vs 1.87, p = 0.033).
The current study is the first to examine postoperative cochlear FLAIR changes in VS patients undergoing hearing preservation surgery. In our study population, abnormal hyperintense FLAIR signal normalized in patients experiencing successful hearing preservation, while those who lost hearing maintained abnormal signal. Future studies may investigate the role of FLAIR in guiding optimal timing of operative intervention in VS patients.

The review process involved the comprehensive analysis of peer-reviewed articles, clinical trials, and experimental studies published within the last decade. Findings reveal that consuming calcium-rich mineral water can contribute significantly to daily calcium intake, particularly for those with lactose intolerance or individuals adhering to plant-based diets. The unique bioavailability of calcium from such waters also appears to enhance absorption, thus potentially offering an advantage over other calcium sources. The potential benefits extend to the cardiovascular system, with some studies indicating a reduction in blood pressure and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that calcium-rich mineral water might have a role in body weight management, though further research is needed. The review identifies several areas requiring additional research, such as the potential interaction between calcium-rich mineral water and other dietary components, the effects on populations with specific health conditions, and the long-term effects of consumption. In conclusion, natural calcium-rich mineral waters show promise as a readily accessible and bioavailable sources of dietary calcium, potentially beneficial for a broad range of individuals. However, further investigation is required to fully understand its range of health impacts and define optimal intake levels.
