Arctic rivers drain ~15% of the global land surface and significantly influence local communities and economies, freshwater and marine ecosystems, and global climate. However, trusted and public ...knowledge of pan-Arctic rivers is inadequate, especially for small rivers and across Eurasia, inhibiting understanding of the Arctic response to climate change. Here, we calculate daily streamflow in 486,493 pan-Arctic river reaches from 1984-2018 by assimilating 9.18 million river discharge estimates made from 155,710 satellite images into hydrologic model simulations. We reveal larger and more heterogenous total water export (3-17% greater) and water export acceleration (factor of 1.2-3.3 larger) than previously reported, with substantial differences across basins, ecoregions, stream orders, human regulation, and permafrost regimes. We also find significant changes in the spring freshet and summer stream intermittency. Ultimately, our results represent an updated, publicly available, and more accurate daily understanding of Arctic rivers uniquely enabled by recent advances in hydrologic modeling and remote sensing.
Under the long-term effect of mineral resource exploitation, especially open-pit mining, ecosystems are severely disturbed. Constructing and optimizing urban ecological networks influenced by ...open-pit mines based on mine–city coordination helps integrate ecological restoration and the construction of urban ecological environments. We applied an InVEST model to Fushun City to evaluate urban ecosystem services under the influence of large open-pit mines. Twenty-one key patches important for maintaining landscape connectivity were screened as the ecological sources in the network, from which ecological resistance surfaces were constructed by combining the impacts of mines on the environment. Minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) and gravity models were then used to extract and classify ecological corridors favorable to species migration and diffusion. Fushun City had large spatial differences in ecosystem service functions, with high-value areas concentrated in the forest-rich Dongzhou District and the northern Shuncheng District. Under the influence of open-pit mining, the ecosystem service capacity of the region south of the Hunhe River was poor and lacked ecological sources. Urban ecological resistance surfaces reached a maximum in the open-pit mining area, and 210 ecological corridors were estimated using the MCR model, of which 46 were important. Only two corridors crossed the West and East open pit, forming two “ecological fracture surfaces.” The Dongzhou and eastern Shuncheng districts had complex network structures and stable ecological environments. In contrast, the central and southern parts of Fushun City lacked ecological corridors owing to the influence of mining pits and gangue mountains, had simple network structures, and low connectivities with other sources. Combined with Fushun City’s development plan, we propose that ecological network optimization should add new ecological source sites, reconstruct and repair ecological corridors, and upgrade ecological breakpoints. This study provides reference and basis for ecological network research in mining cities influenced by open-pit mines.
There is a huge funding gap in the abandoned mines ecological restoration in China. It is of great research value to explore how PPP model can better introduce social capital into the low-profit ...ecological restoration of abandoned mines. Based on the innovation perspective of the central government's reward and punishment system, this paper constructs an evolutionary game model of "local government-social capital", analyzes the interaction and behavior mechanism of core stakeholders in the operation process of abandoned mines ecological restoration PPP mode, and discusses the influence of evolutionary equilibrium strategy and parameters change on evolutionary strategy under different scenarios by Matlab simulation. The research shows that the abandoned mines ecological restoration needs the support of the central government. When the local government lightly punishes the low-quality service of social capital, the central government needs to pay higher costs to promote all parties to actively participate in the operation and supervision of the PPP project. The revenue and cost of government supervision, the operating subsidy for social capital and the cost saved by social capital in providing bad service are the key factors affecting the evolution of the game between government and social capital. Punishment can effectively spur social capital to keep the contract and operate in the project, but the punishment effect will be ineffective without government supervision. Finally, some suggestions are put forward, such as establishing a long-term supervision mechanism and a reasonable income mechanism for PPP projects, increasing penalties for violations, attracting third parties to reduce supervision costs and strengthening communication between the two parties, so as to make the project take into account the economic performance of social capital and the social welfare of government departments, and achieve dual Pareto improvement.
To effectively address climate change, it is necessary to quantify the carbon emissions in high energy-consuming regions, analyze driving factors, and explore effective pathways for achieving green ...development. Therefore, this paper takes Liaoning Province as research area, using extended Kaya identity and LMDI method to analyze the driving factors of carbon emissions from energy consumption in five major industries and the residential consumption sector from 2011 to 2020 in Liaoning Province. Furthermore, this paper uses the Tapio model to explore the decoupling relationship between carbon emissions and economic development. The results show that: 1) From 2011 to 2020, total carbon emissions from energy consumption in five major industries showed a trend of initially declining and then rising, while carbon emissions from the residential consumption sector exhibited an upward trend. 2) For carbon emissions from the industrial sector, economic output and industrial structure are the primary factors that promote and inhibit carbon emissions respectively. The inhibitory effects of energy structure and energy intensity are not significant. Population scale has a certain promoting effect on carbon emissions. For residential energy consumption carbon emissions, Household consumption expenditure, residential energy structure, and residential population scale are driving factors that promote the growth of carbon emissions, while residential energy intensity restrains the growth of carbon emissions. 3) From 2011 to 2018, carbon emissions from the industrial sector have been decoupled from economic output, and the decoupling state is dominated by weak decoupling. However, carbon emissions are once again correlated with economic development in 2019–2020. Carbon emissions from residential energy consumption have not yet decoupled from consumption expenditure, and its decoupling state is unstable and has no obvious change rule.
Coal-resource-based cities, as one of the important types of typical resource-based cities in China, have strong characteristics of instability, sensitivity, and fragility, exhibiting a series of ...vulnerability features of the human-land system. Previous studies have lacked a deeper investigation into the vulnerability of such cities from the perspective of coupling feedback mechanisms among various elements or subsystems. This paper adopts Bohle et al.’s “Dual Structure Model” of vulnerability to establish an indicator system for vulnerability warning in coal-resource-based cities. Using Fushun City as a sample, a dynamic simulation model of vulnerability in coal-resource-based cities is constructed based on system dynamics for warning simulation calculations, analyzing the evolution trend of vulnerability in Fushun City from 2010 to 2022. The results show the following: (1) from 2010 to 2022, the urban vulnerability of Fushun City transitioned from a medium warning level to a relatively safe level, showing a trend of annual reduction and improvement, undergoing three development stages of significant reduction, fluctuation stabilization, and slight rebound. (2) Due to the causal relationships among various elements within the vulnerability subsystems of Fushun City, differences exist in the contribution levels of vulnerability subsystems during the period 2010–2022, under the combined effects of sensitivity and adaptability factors. The contribution rate of the natural subsystem was the highest from 2010 to 2014, while, from 2016 to 2019, urban vulnerability began to shift towards an economically and socially dominant type. Influenced by the pandemic, Fushun City’s overall vulnerability has shown an upward trend since 2020 compared to the previous stage. Finally, specific policy suggestions are proposed for Fushun City to cope with vulnerability changes based on the analysis results, providing a theoretical basis for achieving sustainable development in such coal-resource-based cities.
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission, expected to launch in 2022, will enable near global river discharge estimation from surface water extents and elevations. However, ...SWOT’s orbit specifications provide non-uniform space–time sampling. Previous studies have demonstrated that SWOT’s unique spatiotemporal sampling has a minimal impact on derived discharge frequency distributions, baseflow magnitudes, and annual discharge characteristics. In this study, we aim to extend the analysis of SWOT’s added value in the context of hydrologic model calibration. We calibrate a hydrologic model using previously derived synthetic SWOT discharges across 39 gauges in the Ohio River Basin. Three discharge timeseries are used for calibration: daily observations, SWOT temporally sampled, and SWOT temporally sampled including estimated uncertainty. Using 10,000 model iterations to explore predefined parameter ranges, each discharge timeseries results in similar optimal model parameters. We find that the annual mean and peak flow values at each gauge location from the optimal parameter sets derived from each discharge timeseries differ by less than 10% percent on average. Our findings suggest that hydrologic models calibrated using discharges derived from SWOT’s non-uniform space–time sampling are likely to achieve results similar to those based on calibrating with in situ daily observations.
Progress in immunotherapy for prostate cancer (PCa) lags that for other cancers, mainly because of limited immune infiltration in PCa. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of NSD2 as an ...immunotherapeutic target in PCa. Immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the expression pattern of NSD2 in 34 cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), 36 cases of prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN), and 57 cases of PCa, including 19 cases of metastatic castration-resistant prostatic cancer (mCRPC). Single-cell RNA sequencing and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were used to correlate NSD2 with certain downstream pathways. Furthermore, the Immuno-Oncology-Biological-Research (IOBR) software package was used to analyze the potential roles of NSD2 in the tumor microenvironment. We found that the positive expression rate of NSD2 increased progressively in BPH, PIN and PCa. mCRPC had the highest staining intensity for NSD2. High NSD2 expression was positively correlated with the infiltration level of CD4
tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and negatively correlated with that of CD8
TILs. Importantly, a new immune classification based on NSD2 expression and CD4
TILs and CD8
TILs was successfully used to stratify PCa patients based on OS.PSA and CD4
TILs are independent risk factors for PCa bone metastasis. This study demonstrates a novel role for NSD2 in defining immune infiltrate on in PCa and highlights the great potential for its application in immunotherapy response evaluation for prostate malignancies.
Remote sensing has gained attention as a novel source of primary information for estimating river discharge, and the Mass‐conserved Flow Law Inversion (McFLI) approach has successfully estimated ...river discharge in ungauged basins solely from optical satellite data. However, McFLI currently suffers from two major drawbacks: (1) existing optical satellites lead to temporally and spatially sparse discharge estimates and (2) because of the assumptions required, McFLI cannot guarantee downstream flow continuity. Hydrological modeling has neither drawback, yet model accuracy is frequently limited by a lack of discharge observations. We therefore combine McFLI and models in a data assimilation framework applicable globally. We establish a daily “ungauged” baseline model for 28,998 reaches of the Missouri river basin forced by recently published global runoff data, which we do not calibrate. We estimate discharge via McFLI using ∼1 million width measurements made from 12,000 Landsat scenes and assimilate McFLI into the model before validating at 403 USGS gauges. Results show that assimilated discharges did not impair already accurate baseline flows and achieved median improvements of 28% normalized root mean square error, 0.50 Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and 0.23 Kling–Gupta efficiency where baseline performance was poor (defined as baseline negative NSE, 225/403 reaches). We ultimately improved flows at 92% of these originally poorly modeled gauges, even though Landsat images only provide McFLI discharges at 1.5% of reaches and 26% of simulated days. Our results suggest that the combination of McFLI and state‐of‐the‐art hydrology models can improve flow estimations in ungauged basins globally.

The development of highly active non-precious metal electrocatalysts is crucial for advancing the practical application of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Doping engineering is one of the ...important strategies to optimize the electrocatalytic activity of electrocatalysts. Herein, we put forward a simple strategy to optimize the catalytic activity of MoO3 material by incorporating the Cu atoms into the interlayer (denoted as Cu-MoO3). The prepared Cu-MoO3 nanosheet has a larger surface area, higher conductivity, and strong electron interactions, which contributes to optimal reaction kinetics of the HER process. As a result, the Cu-MoO3 nanosheet only needs a small overpotential of 106 mV to reach the geometric current density of 10 mA cm−2. In addition, it also delivers a low Tafel slope of 83 mV dec−1, as well as high stability and Faraday efficiency. Notably, when using the Cu-MoO3 as a cathode to construct the water electrolyzer, it only needs 1.55 V to reach the 10 mA cm−2, indicating its promising application in hydrogen generation. This work provides a novel type of design strategy for a highly active electrocatalyst for an energy conversion system.
Antimicrobial peptides derived from the skin secretions of amphibians have made important progress in tumor therapy due to their unique mechanism of destroying cell membranes. Figainin 1 (F1) is an ...18-amino acid antimicrobial peptide from the skin secretions of Boana raniceps frogs. In a previous study, F1 was shown to inhibit cancer cell proliferation. F1 is composed entirely of natural amino acids; therefore, it is easily degraded by a variety of proteases, resulting in poor stability and a short half-life. In the present study, we used a fatty acid modification strategy to improve the stability of Figainin 1. Among the 8 peptides synthesized, A-10 showed the strongest antiproliferative activity against K562 cells and the other four tumor cell lines, and its stability against serum and proteinase K was improved compared with F1. We found that A-10 works through two mechanisms, cell membrane destruction and apoptosis, and can arrest the cell cycle in the G0/G1 phase. Moreover, A-10 exhibited self-assembly behavior. Overall, it is necessary to select a fatty acid with a suitable length for modification to improve the stability and antiproliferative activity of antimicrobial peptides. This study provides a good reference for the development of antimicrobial peptides as effective anticancer compounds.
