The insertion of a nasogastric (NG) tube is often a difficult experience for both patients and caregivers. This often results in a high failure rate of NG insertion. This pilot study aimed to ...evaluate the effectiveness, tolerance, and acceptability of hypnoanalgesia to assist self-insertion of an NG tube. Patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy for autologous or allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or acute leukemia and with high risk of aplasia were included in the study. A total of 38 patients were included during 6 consecutive months. They all achieved successful NG tube self-insertion. The NG tube remained in place during hospitalization in 32 cases for an average duration of 15 days. Six patients rejected the NG tube during vomiting but they all voluntarily attempted it again later on and succeeded. The discomfort related to NG-tube insertion was mild. This pilot study suggests that NG tube self-insertion assisted by hypnoanalgesia may be effective, well-accepted, and well-tolerated in patients. These promising findings will need further confirmation.

ÃÂ The overall introduction setsÃÂ the volume against the backdrop of current work in English for Academic Purposes, and introductions to the each section draw out connections between the chapters and put them into context. The contributors are experts in the field and they cover both novice and expert examples of EAP.ÃÂ The book ends with an afterword that provides an agenda-setting closing perspective on the future of EAP research. Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is a commensal of the digestive and genitourinary tracts of humans that emerged as the leading cause of bacterial neonatal infections in Europe ...and North America during the 1960s. Due to the lack of epidemiological and genomic data, the reasons for this emergence are unknown. Here we show by comparative genome analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction of 229 isolates that the rise of human GBS infections corresponds to the selection and worldwide dissemination of only a few clones. The parallel expansion of the clones is preceded by the insertion of integrative and conjugative elements conferring tetracycline resistance (TcR). Thus, we propose that the use of tetracycline from 1948 onwards led in humans to the complete replacement of a diverse GBS population by only few TcR clones particularly well adapted to their host, causing the observed emergence of GBS diseases in neonates.
This article deals with the place of learner corpora, i.e. corpora containing authentic language data produced by learners of a foreign/second language, in English for academic purposes (EAP) ...pedagogy and sets out to demonstrate that they have a valuable contribution to make to the field. Following an initial brief introduction to corpus-based analyses of academic writing, the article zooms in on learner corpora, describing some of the findings that emerge from corpus studies of L2 learners’ EAP writing. The next section examines the use of corpora in EAP materials design and shows that the few existing corpus-informed EAP tools tend to be based on native corpora only. The article then reports on a collaborative corpus-based project between the Centre for English Corpus Linguistics (Université catholique de Louvain) and Macmillan Education, which aims to describe a number of rhetorical functions particularly prominent in academic writing. The analysis of learner corpus data and their comparison with data from native corpora have highlighted a number of problems which non-native learners experience when writing academic essays, e.g., lack of register awareness, phraseological infelicities, and semantic misuse. In many sexual assault cases, bedding and clothing are essential pieces of evidence that are screened for semen stains to gather DNA from the assailant. In some cases, these items have been washed before being seized and sent to the forensic lab. However, few data exist on the optimal methods for detecting and sampling semen stains on washed fabrics. In this paper, we used semen stains washed up to six times to evaluate the efficiency of commonly used screening methods for the detection of semen: alternate light source (ALS), acid phosphatase (AP), prostate specific antigen (PSA) and microscopy (sperm Hy-Liter™, SHL). We also assessed different washing conditions (detergents, washing machines, addition of bleach) and sampling methods (cutting and swabbing). The results show that some semen stain detection strategies, such as ALS, PSA, and SHL, are effective even when the item was washed multiple times. We also show that a complete genetic profile could be obtained from semen stains washed six times. Based on these findings, we present different strategies for the detection and sampling of semen stains depending on the circumstances of the case.
We performed a genome-wide association study on 1,292 individuals with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and 30,503 controls from Iceland and The Netherlands, with a follow-up of top markers in up to ...3,267 individuals with AAAs and 7,451 controls. The A allele of rs7025486 on 9q33 was found to associate with AAA, with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.21 and P = 4.6 × 10−10. In tests for association with other vascular diseases, we found that rs7025486A is associated with early onset myocardial infarction (OR = 1.18, P = 3.1 × 10−5), peripheral arterial disease (OR = 1.14, P = 3.9 × 10−5) and pulmonary embolism (OR = 1.20, P = 0.00030), but not with intracranial aneurysm or ischemic stroke. No association was observed between rs7025486A and common risk factors for arterial and venous diseases-that is, smoking, lipid levels, obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Rs7025486 is located within DAB2IP, which encodes an inhibitor of cell growth and survival.

À rebours des ...grands paradigmes interprétatifs qui voient des idéologies partout, et qui déduisent ce que font les acteurs d’une simple adhésion à des idées politiques, les contributeurs – historiens, sociologues et politistes – s’inspirent d’une approche écologique du vote soucieuse de saisir l’électeur en contexte. Le principe de l’élection est loin de résumer l’ensemble des rapports au politique et des occasions au gré desquelles ces derniers se nouent. Il constitue néanmoins un observatoire particulièrement fertile pour analyser les pratiques (et la manière changeante dont celles-ci s’organisent) et les répertoires d’appréciation que mobilisent les acteurs et les circonstances dans lesquelles ils les (ré)activent dès lors qu’ils votent.
