Human infections with zoonotic coronaviruses (CoVs), including severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)-CoV and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)-CoV, have raised great public health concern ...globally. Here, we report a novel bat-origin CoV causing severe and fatal pneumonia in humans.
We collected clinical data and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) specimens from five patients with severe pneumonia from Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital, Hubei province, China. Nucleic acids of the BAL were extracted and subjected to next-generation sequencing. Virus isolation was carried out, and maximum-likelihood phylogenetic trees were constructed.
Five patients hospitalized from December 18 to December 29, 2019 presented with fever, cough, and dyspnea accompanied by complications of acute respiratory distress syndrome. Chest radiography revealed diffuse opacities and consolidation. One of these patients died. Sequence results revealed the presence of a previously unknown β-CoV strain in all five patients, with 99.8% to 99.9% nucleotide identities among the isolates. These isolates showed 79.0% nucleotide identity with the sequence of SARS-CoV (GenBank NC_004718) and 51.8% identity with the sequence of MERS-CoV (GenBank NC_019843). The virus is phylogenetically closest to a bat SARS-like CoV (SL-ZC45, GenBank MG772933) with 87.6% to 87.7% nucleotide identity, but is in a separate clade. Moreover, these viruses have a single intact open reading frame gene 8, as a further indicator of bat-origin CoVs. However, the amino acid sequence of the tentative receptor-binding domain resembles that of SARS-CoV, indicating that these viruses might use the same receptor.

Here, a stable Na2/3Ni1/6Mn2/3Cu1/9Mg1/18O2 cathode material is proposed that consists of multiple‐layer oriented stacking nanoflakes, in which the nickel sites are partially substituted by copper and magnesium, a characteristic of the material that is confirmed by multiscale scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy techniques. Owing to the optimal morphology structure modulation and chemical element substitution strategy, the electrode displays remarkable rate performance (73% capacity retention at 30C compared to 0.5C) and outstanding cycling stability in Na half‐cell system couple with unprecedented full battery performance. The underlying thermal stability, phase stability, and Na+ storage mechanisms are clearly elucidated through the systematical characterizations of electrochemical behaviors, in situ X‐ray diffraction at different temperatures, and operando X‐ray diffraction upon Na+ deintercalation/intercalation. Surprisingly, a quasi‐solid‐solution reaction is switched to an absolute solid‐solution reaction and a capacitive Na+ storage mechanism is demonstrated via quantitative electrochemical kinetics calculation during charge/discharge process. Such a simple and effective strategy might reveal a new avenue into the rational design of excellent rate capability and long cycle stability cathode materials for practical SIBs.
A stable copper and magnesium cosubstituted Na2/3Ni1/6Mn2/3Cu1/9Mg1/18O2 cathode material consisting of multiple‐layer oriented stacking nanoflakes is reported. An optimal structure design and a chemical element substitution strategy are demonstrated to greatly improve Na+ transport kinetics and structural stability of P2‐type cathode material, resulting in high‐rate and long cycle life for a sodium‐ion battery.
Evolutionary feature selection (FS) methods face the challenge of "curse of dimensionality" when dealing with high-dimensional data. Focusing on this challenge, this article studies a variable-size ...cooperative coevolutionary particle swarm optimization algorithm (VS-CCPSO) for FS. The proposed algorithm employs the idea of "divide and conquer" in cooperative coevolutionary approach, but several new developed problem-guided operators/strategies make it more suitable for FS problems. First, a space division strategy based on the feature importance is presented, which can classify relevant features into the same subspace with a low computational cost. Following that, an adaptive adjustment mechanism of subswarm size is developed to maintain an appropriate size for each subswarm, with the purpose of saving computational cost on evaluating particles. Moreover, a particle deletion strategy based on fitness-guided binary clustering, and a particle generation strategy based on feature importance and crossover both are designed to ensure the quality of particles in the subswarms. We apply VS-CCPSO to 12 typical datasets and compare it with six state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that VS-CCPSO has the capability of obtaining good feature subsets, suggesting its competitiveness for tackling FS problems with high dimensionality.
A strategy called ultramicroporous building unit (UBU) is introduced. It allows the creation of hierarchical bi‐porous features that work in tandem to enhance gas uptake capacity and separation. ...Smaller pores from UBUs promote selectivity, while larger inter‐UBU packing pores increase uptake capacity. The effectiveness of this UBU strategy is shown with a cobalt MOF (denoted SNNU‐45) in which octahedral cages with 4.5 Å pore size serve as UBUs. The C2H2 uptake capacity at 1 atm reaches 193.0 cm3 g−1 (8.6 mmol g−1) at 273 K and 134.0 cm3 g−1 (6.0 mmol g−1) at 298 K. Such high uptake capacity is accompanied by a high C2H2/CO2 selectivity of up to 8.5 at 298 K. Dynamic breakthrough studies at room temperature and 1 atm show a C2H2/CO2 breakthrough time up to 79 min g−1, among top‐performing MOFs. Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations agree that ultrahigh C2H2/CO2 selectivity is mainly from UBU ultramicropores, while packing pores promote C2H2 uptake capacity.

The SARS-CoV-2-infected disease (COVID-19) outbreak is a major threat to human beings. Previous studies mainly focused on Wuhan and typical symptoms. We analysed 74 confirmed COVID-19 cases with GI ...symptoms in the Zhejiang province to determine epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics.
COVID-19 hospital patients were admitted in the Zhejiang province from 17 January 2020 to 8 February 2020. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, management and outcome data of patients with GI symptoms were analysed using multivariate analysis for risk of severe/critical type. Bioinformatics were used to analyse features of SARS-CoV-2 from Zhejiang province.
Among enrolled 651 patients, 74 (11.4%) presented with at least one GI symptom (nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea), average age of 46.14 years, 4-day incubation period and 10.8% had pre-existing liver disease. Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 17 (22.97%) and 23 (31.08%) had severe/critical types and family clustering, respectively, significantly higher than those without GI symptoms, 47 (8.14%) and 118 (20.45%). Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 29 (39.19%), 23 (31.08%), 8 (10.81%) and 16 (21.62%) had significantly higher rates of fever >38.5°C, fatigue, shortness of breath and headache, respectively. Low-dose glucocorticoids and antibiotics were administered to 14.86% and 41.89% of patients, respectively. Demands for large‐scale energy storage systems have driven the development of layered transition‐metal oxide cathodes for room‐temperature rechargeable sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Now, an abnormal ...layered‐tunnel heterostructure Na0.44Co0.1Mn0.9O2 cathode material induced by chemical element substitution is reported. By virtue of beneficial synergistic effects, this layered‐tunnel electrode shows outstanding electrochemical performance in sodium half‐cell system and excellent compatibility with hard carbon anode in sodium full‐cell system. The underlying formation process, charge compensation mechanism, phase transition, and sodium‐ion storage electrochemistry are clearly articulated and confirmed through combined analyses of in situ high‐energy X‐ray diffraction and ex situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy as well as operando X‐ray diffraction. This crystal structure engineering regulation strategy offers a future outlook into advanced cathode materials for SIBs.

Phosphors emitting visible and near-infrared persistent luminescence have been explored extensively owing to their unusual properties and commercial interest in their applications such as ...glow-in-the-dark paints, optical information storage, and in vivo bioimaging. However, no persistent phosphor that features emissions in the ultraviolet C range (200-280 nm) has been known to exist so far. Here, we demonstrate a strategy for creating a new generation of persistent phosphor that exhibits strong ultraviolet C emission with an initial power density over 10 milliwatts per square meter and an afterglow of more than 2 h. Experimental characterizations coupled with first-principles calculations have revealed that structural defects associated with oxygen introduction-induced anion vacancies in fluoride elpasolite can function as electron traps, which capture and store a large number of electrons triggered by X-ray irradiation. Notably, we show that the ultraviolet C afterglow intensity of the yielded phosphor is sufficiently strong for sterilization. Our discovery of this ultraviolet C afterglow opens up new avenues for research on persistent phosphors, and it offers new perspectives on their applications in terms of sterilization, disinfection, drug release, cancer treatment, anti-counterfeiting, and beyond.
Improvement of crop drought resistance and water-use efficiency (WUE) has been a major endeavor in agriculture. Here, we report the genetic evidence suggesting a genetic pathway, which consists of EDT1/HDG11, ERECTA, and E2Fa loci, and regulates WUE by modulating stomatal density. AtEDT1/HDG11 transcriptionally activates ERECTA by binding to homeodomain-binding (HD) cis-elements in the ERECTA promoter. ERECTA, in turn, depends on E2Fa to modulate the expression of cell cycle-related genes.
This modulation affects the transition from mitosis to endocycle, leading to increased ploidy levels in leaf cells, and therefore increased cell size and decreased stomatal density.
Our results suggest a possible EDT1/HDG11-ERECTA-E2Fa genetic pathway that reduces stomatal density by increasing cell size and provide a new avenue to improve WUE of crops.
Abstract Background Pathogenesis and diagnostic biomarkers for diseases can be discovered by metabolomic profiling of human fluids. If the various types of coronary artery disease (CAD) can be ...accurately characterized by metabolomics, effective treatment may be targeted without using unnecessary therapies and resources. Objectives The authors studied disturbed metabolic pathways to assess the diagnostic value of metabolomics-based biomarkers in different types of CAD. Methods A cohort of 2,324 patients from 4 independent centers was studied. Patients underwent coronary angiography for suspected CAD. Groups were divided as follows: normal coronary artery (NCA), nonobstructive coronary atherosclerosis (NOCA), stable angina (SA), unstable angina (UA), and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Plasma metabolomic profiles were determined by liquid chromatography–quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and were analyzed by multivariate statistics. Results We made 12 cross-comparisons to and within CAD to characterize metabolic disturbances. We focused on comparisons of NOCA versus NCA, SA versus NOCA, UA versus SA, and AMI versus UA. Other comparisons were made, including SA versus NCA, UA versus NCA, AMI versus NCA, UA versus NOCA, AMI versus NOCA, AMI versus SA, significant CAD (SA/UA/AMI) versus nonsignificant CAD (NCA/NOCA), and acute coronary syndrome (UA/AMI) versus SA. A total of 89 differential metabolites were identified. The altered metabolic pathways included reduced phospholipid catabolism, increased amino acid metabolism, increased short-chain acylcarnitines, decrease in tricarboxylic acid cycle, and less biosynthesis of primary bile acid. For differential diagnosis, 12 panels of specific metabolomics-based biomarkers provided areas under the curve of 0.938 to 0.996 in the discovery phase (n = 1,086), predictive values of 89.2% to 96.0% in the test phase (n = 933), and 85.3% to 96.4% in the 3-center external sets (n = 305). Conclusions Plasma metabolomics are powerful for characterizing metabolic disturbances. Differences in small-molecule metabolites may reflect underlying CAD and serve as biomarkers for CAD progression.
Together with economic development and accelerated urbanization, the urban population in China has been increasing rapidly, and anthropogenic heat released by large-scale energy consumption in cities ...is expected to be a vital factor affecting the climate. In this paper, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the Urban Canopy Model (UCM) is employed to simulate the regional impacts on climate under the two scenarios: the underlying surface changes due to urbanization (USCU) and anthropogenic heat release (AHR). Three experiments were performed from December 2006 to December 2008. With respect to the USCU, the surface albedo and the available surface soil water decrease markedly. With the inclusion of AHR, the two scenarios give rise to increased surface temperatures over most areas of China. Especially in the urban agglomeration area of the Yangtze River delta, the combination of USCU and AHR could result in an increase of 2°C in the surface air temperature. The influence of AHR on surface air temperature in winter is greater than the influence of USCU without considering any extra sources of heat, but the opposite is found in summer. The combination of USCU and AHR leads to changes in the surface energy budget. They both increase sensible heat flux, but USCU decreases latent heat flux significantly, and AHR increases latent heat flux slightly. Nevertheless, under the influence of these two scenarios, the precipitation increases in some areas, especially in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region, while it decreases in other areas, most notably the Yangtze River delta.
