This brief and personal essay discusses Ester Hernández's and Astrid Hadad's artistic relationship, which includes a beautiful friendship that spans time and space. In particular, and from an ...intimate vantage point, I read two of Hernández's images that feature Hadad, which the Mexican artist has displayed in her home in Mexico City, to ponder a larger question regarding contemporary cross-border feminist and genderqueer esthetics and relations. The queer kinship between these two artists, I humbly posit, extends to the fans that come out to support Hadad's shows when she performs in cities in the U.S. with large Latinx demographics, particularly in California.
The burden of obesity differs by socioeconomic status. We aimed to characterise the prevalence of obesity among adult men and women in Latin America and the Caribbean by socioeconomic measures and ...the shifting obesity burden over time.
We did a cross-sectional series analysis of obesity prevalence by socioeconomic status by use of national health surveys done between 1998 and 2017 in 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. We generated equiplots to display inequalities in, the primary outcome, obesity by wealth, education, and residence area. We measured obesity gaps as the difference in percentage points between the highest and lowest obesity prevalence within each socioeconomic measure, and described trends as well as changing patterns of the obesity burden over time.
479 809 adult men and women were included in the analysis. Obesity prevalence across countries has increased over time, with distinct patterns emerging by wealth and education indices. In the most recent available surveys, obesity was most prevalent among women in Mexico in 2016, and the least prevalent among women in Haiti in 2016. The largest gap between the highest and lowest obesity estimates by wealth was observed in Honduras among women (21·6 percentage point gap), and in Peru among men (22·4 percentage point gap), compared with a 3·7 percentage point gap among women in Brazil and 3·3 percentage points among men in Argentina. Urban residents consistently had a larger burden than their rural counterparts in most countries, with obesity gaps ranging from 0·1 percentage points among women in Paraguay to 15·8 percentage points among men in Peru. The trend analysis done in five countries suggests a shifting of the obesity burden across socioeconomic groups and different patterns by gender. Obesity gaps by education in Mexico have reduced over time among women, but increased among men, whereas the gap has increased among women but remains relatively constant among men in Argentina.
The increase in obesity prevalence in the Latin American and Caribbean region has been paralleled with an unequal distribution and a shifting burden across socioeconomic groups. Anticipation of the establishment of obesity among low socioeconomic groups could provide opportunities for societal gains in primordial prevention.

Objectives
We examined whether an array of scleroderma autoantibodies associates with risk of cancer and could be useful tools for risk stratification.
Methods
Scleroderma cancer cases and ...scleroderma controls without cancer from the Johns Hopkins Scleroderma Center and the University of Pittsburgh Scleroderma Center were studied. Sera were assayed by Lineblot and enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for autoantibodies against centromere, topoisomerase 1, RNA polymerase (POLR) 3, PM/Scl, Th/To, NOR90, U3 RNP, Ku, Ro52, U1RNP, and RNPC3. Logistic regression models were constructed to examine whether distinct autoantibodies associated with overall cancer at any time and cancer‐associated scleroderma (cancer occurring three years before and after scleroderma onset). The effects of having more than one autoantibody on cancer were further examined using random forest analysis.
Results
A total of 676 cases and 687 controls were studied. After adjusting for relevant covariates, anti‐POLR3 (odds ratio OR 1.47, 95% confidence interval CI 1.03–2.11) and monospecific anti‐Ro52 (OR 2.19, 95% CI 1.29–3.74) were associated with an increased overall cancer risk, whereas anticentromere (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.51–0.93) and anti‐U1RNP (OR 0.63, 95% CI 0.43–0.93) were associated with lower risk. When examining risk of cancer‐associated scleroderma, these immune responses remained associated with increased or decreased risk: anti‐POLR3 (OR 2.28, 95% CI 1.33–3.91), monospecific anti‐Ro52 (OR 2.58, 95% CI 1.05–6.30), anticentromere (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.20–0.74), and anti‐U1RNP (OR 0.32, 95% CI 0.11–0.93). Anti‐Ro52 plus anti‐U1RNP or anti‐Th/To was associated with decreased cancer risk compared with anti‐Ro52 alone.
Conclusions
These data suggest that five distinct scleroderma immune responses, alone or in combination, may be useful tools to stratify the risk of cancer for scleroderma patients. Further study examining cancer risk in autoantibody subgroups relative to the general population is warranted.

GATA1 is considered as the “master” transcription factor in erythropoiesis. It regulates at the transcriptional level all aspects of erythroid maturation and function, as revealed by gene knockout ...studies in mice and by genome‐wide occupancies in erythroid cells. The GATA1 protein contains two zinc finger domains and an N‐terminal transactivation domain. GATA1 translation results in the production of the full‐length protein and of a shorter variant (GATA1s) lacking the N‐terminal transactivation domain, which is functionally deficient in supporting erythropoiesis. GATA1 protein abundance is highly regulated in erythroid cells at different levels, including transcription, mRNA translation, posttranslational modifications, and protein degradation, in a differentiation‐stage‐specific manner. Maintaining high GATA1 protein levels is essential in the early stages of erythroid maturation, whereas downregulating GATA1 protein levels is a necessary step in terminal erythroid differentiation. The importance of maintaining proper GATA1 protein homeostasis in erythropoiesis is demonstrated by the fact that both GATA1 loss and its overexpression result in lethal anemia. Importantly, alterations in any of those GATA1 regulatory checkpoints have been recognized as an important cause of hematological disorders such as dyserythropoiesis (with or without thrombocytopenia), β‐thalassemia, Diamond–Blackfan anemia, myelodysplasia, or leukemia. In this review, we provide an overview of the multilevel regulation of GATA1 protein homeostasis in erythropoiesis and of its deregulation in hematological disease.
The survival of a species largely depends on the ability of individuals to reproduce, thus perpetuating their life history. The advent of metazoans (i.e. pluricellular animals) brought about the ...evolution of specialized tissues and organs, which in turn led to the development of complex protein regulatory pathways. This study sought to elucidate the evolutionary relationships between female reproduction-associated proteins by analyzing the transcriptomes of representative species from a selection of marine invertebrate phyla. Our study identified more than 50 reproduction-related genes across a wide evolutionary spectrum, from Porifera to Vertebrata. Among these, a total of 19 sequences had not been previously reported in at least one phylum, particularly in Porifera. Moreover, most of the structural differences between these proteins did not appear to be determined by environmental pressures or reproductive strategies, but largely obeyed a distinguishable evolutionary pattern from sponges to mammals.
Life expectancy in Marfan syndrome patients has improved thanks to the early detection of aortic dilation and prophylactic aortic root surgery. Current international clinical guidelines support the ...use of aortic root diameter as a predictor of complications. However, other imaging markers are needed to improve risk stratification. This study aim to ascertain whether proximal aorta longitudinal and circumferential strain and distensibility assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) predict the aortic root dilation rate and aortic events in Marfan syndrome.
One hundred and seventeen Marfan patients with no previous aortic dissection, cardiac/aortic surgery, or moderate/severe aortic regurgitation were prospectively included in a multicentre protocol of clinical and imaging follow-up. At baseline, CMR was performed and proximal aorta longitudinal strain and ascending aorta circumferential strain and distensibility were obtained. During follow-up (85.7 75.0-93.2 months), the annual growth rate of aortic root diameter was 0.62 ± 0.65 mm/year. Fifteen patients underwent elective surgical aortic root replacement and four presented aortic dissection. Once corrected for baseline clinical and demographic characteristics and aortic root diameter, proximal aorta longitudinal strain, but not circumferential strain and distensibility, was an independent predictor of the aortic root diameter growth rate (P = 0.001, P = 0.823, and P = 0.997, respectively), z-score growth rate (P = 0.013, P = 0.672, and P = 0.680, respectively), and aortic events (P = 0.023, P = 0.096, and P = 0.237, respectively).
Proximal aorta longitudinal strain is independently related to the aortic root dilation rate and aortic events in addition to aortic root diameter, clinical risk factors, and demographic characteristics in Marfan syndrome patients.
The main function of platelets is to maintain normal hemostasis. Inefficient platelet production and/or defective platelet function results in bleeding disorders resulting from a wide range of ...genetic traits and acquired pathologies. Several platelet function tests have been developed for use in the clinic and in experimental animal models. In particular, platelet aggregation is routinely measured in an aggregometer, which requires normal platelet counts and significant blood sample volumes. For this reason, the analysis of thrombocytopenic patients, infants, and animal models is problematic. We have developed a novel flow cytometry test of platelet aggregation, in which 10- to 25-fold lower platelet counts or sample volumes can be used, either of platelet-rich plasma or whole blood from human subjects or mice. This setup can be applied to test in small assay volumes the influence of a variety of stimuli, drugs, and plasma factors, such as antibodies, on platelet aggregation. The presented principle stands as a novel promising tool, which allows analysis of platelet aggregation in thrombocytopenic patients or infants, and facilitates studies in platelets obtained from experimental animal models without the need of special devices but a flow cytometer.

Nowadays, wastewater treatment is a critical concern, particularly regarding the removal of heavy metals through adsorption methods. Extensive research has been conducted on obtaining high-yield and ...environmentally friendly adsorbents. Natural polymer adsorbents especially have shown promise in ion and organic molecule adsorption. To enhance the practical applicability of adsorbents, the combination of biopolymers to form biocomposites is a promising alternative. In this study, adsorbents based on a 1:1 wt./wt. of chitosan (CS) and alginate (SA) were prepared. The influence of the regeneration route and drying conditions on the copper adsorption capacity was investigated, along with reaction parameters such as contact time, adsorbent particle size, and pH. The highest adsorption capacity was observed in the composite material obtained through a one-pot regeneration process and freeze-dried. The CSAR3L sample exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 288 mg Cu(II)/g after 360 min at 25 °C. The synergistic effect between the CS and SA precursors was confirmed by analyzing the individual precursors and their mechanical mixture. The initial adsorption rates at pH 6 followed the order: CSAR3-L > Bk-CSR3L > Bk-SAR3L + Bk-CSR3L > Bk-SAR3L. The physicochemical and morphological properties of the materials were studied by FTIR, XRD, DLS, XPS, optical microscopy, EDS-SEM, elemental chemical analysis, and TGA-DTG. The utilization of different drying methods resulted in the formation of calcium carbonate crystalline phases in the as-prepared materials, thus creating substantial adsorption active sites. After the adsorption process, hydroxylated copper sulfate phases and a significant decrease in calcium concentration were observed, indicating that an ion exchange adsorption mechanism occurred. The analysis of adsorption kinetics and the shape of the adsorption isotherms, in agreement with the characterization results, suggested the presence of multiple active sites and the formation of a chemisorption monolayer.
