Parametric study of tip injection was implemented experimentally on a subsonic axial flow compressor to understand the underlying flow mechanisms of stability improvement of the compressor with ...discrete tip injection.Injector throat height varied from 2 to 6 times the height of rotor tip clearance, and circumferential coverage percentage ranged from 8.3% to 25% of the annulus.Static pressure fluctuations over the rotor tip were measured with fast-response pressure transducers.Whole-passage time-accurate simulations were also carried out to help us understand the flow details. The combinations of tip injection with traditional casing treatments were experimentally studied to generate an engineering-acceptable method of compressor stall control. The results indicate that the maximum stability improvement is achieved when injectors are choked despite their different sizes. The effect of circumferential coverage percentage on compressor stability depends on the value of injector throat height for un-choked injectors, and vice versa.Tip blockage in the blade passage is greatly reduced by the choked injectors, which is the primary reason for stability enhancement. The accomplishment of blockage diminishment is maintained in the circumferential direction with the unsteady effect of tip injection, which manifests as a hysteresis between the recovery of tip blockage and the recovery of tip leakage vortex. The unsteady effect is primarily responsible for the effectiveness of tip injection with a partial circumferential coverage.Tip injection cannot enhance the stability of the rotor with axial slots significantly, but it can improve the stability of the rotor with circumferential grooves further. The combined structure of tip injection with circumferential grooves is an alternative for engineering application.

In the current study, the effects of a combined application between micro-vortex generator and boundary layer suction on the flow characteristics of a high-load compressor cascade are investigated. ...The micro-vortex generator with a special configuration and the longitudinal suction slot are adopted. The calculated results show that a reverse flow region, which is considered the main reason for occurring stall at 7.9° incidence, grows and collapses rapidly near the leading edge and leads to two critical points occurring on the end-wall with the increasing incidence in the baseline. As the micro-vortex generator is introduced in the baseline cascade, the corner separation is switched to a trailing edge separation by the thrust from the induced vortex. Meanwhile, the occurrence of failure is delayed due to the mixed low energy fluid and main flow. The synergistic effects between the micro-vortex generator and the boundary layer suction on the performance of the cascade are superior to the baseline at all the incidence conditions before the occurrence of failure, and the sudden deterioration of the cascade occurs at 10.3° incidence. The optimal results show that the farther upstream suction position, the lower total pressure loss of the cascade with vortex generator at the near stall condition. Moreover, the induced vortex with a leg can migrate the accumulated low energy fluid backward to delay the occurrence of stall.

Aiming at analyzing performance in cloud computing, some unpredictable
perturbations which may lead to performance downgrade are essential factors
that should not be neglected. To avoid performance ...downgrade in cloud computing
system, it is reasonable to measure the impact of the perturbations, and
further propose a robust scheduling strategy to maintain the performance of the
system at an acceptable level. In this paper, we first describe the
supply-demand relationship of service between cloud service providers and
customers, in which the profit and waiting time are objectives they most
concerned. Then, on the basis of introducing the lowest acceptable profit and
longest acceptable waiting time for cloud service providers and customers
respectively, we define a robustness metric method to declare that the number
and speed of servers should be adequately configured in a feasible region, such
that the performance of cloud computing system can stay at an acceptable level
when it is subject to the perturbations. Subsequently, we discuss the
robustness metric method in several cases, and propose heuristic optimization
algorithm to enhance the robustness of the system as much as possible. At last,
the performances of the proposed algorithm are validated by comparing with DE
and PSO algorithm, the results show the superiority of the proposed algorithm.
Synovitis, a common clinical symptom for osteoarthritis (OA) patients, is highly related to OA pathological progression and pain manifestation. The activated synovial macrophages have been ...demonstrated to play an important role in synovitis, but the mechanisms about macrophage activation are still not clear. In this study, we found that the exosome-like vesicles from osteoarthritic chondrocytes could be a new biological factor to stimulate inflammasome activation and increase mature IL-1β production in macrophages. The degraded cartilage explants produced more exosome-like vesicles than the nondegraded ones, while the exosome-like vesicles from chondrocytes could enter into joint synovium tissue and macrophages. Moreover, the exosome-like vesicles from osteoarthritic chondrocytes enhanced the production of mature IL-1β in macrophages. These vesicles could inhibit ATG4B expression via miR-449a-5p, leading to inhibition of autophagy in LPS-primed macrophages. The decreased autophagy promoted the production of mitoROS, which further enhanced the inflammasome activation and subsequent IL-1β processing. Ultimately, the increase of mature IL-1β may aggravate synovial inflammation and promote the progression of OA disease. Our study provides a new perspective to understand the activation of synovial macrophages and synovitis in OA patients, which may be beneficial for therapeutic intervention in synovitis-related OA patients.
Mortality prediction is an important task to achieve smart healthcare, especially for the management of intensive care unit. It can provide a reference for doctors to quickly predict the course of ...disease and customize early intervention programs for the patients in need. With the development of the electronic medical records, deep learning methods are introduced to deal with the prediction task. In the electronic medical records, clinical notes always contain rich and diverse medical information, including the clinical histories and reports during admission. Mortality prediction methods mostly rely on the temporal events such as medical examinations and ignore the related reports and history information in the clinical notes. We hope that we can utilize both temporal events and clinical notes information to get better mortality prediction results.
We propose a multimodal temporal-clinical note network to model both temporal and clinical notes. Specifically, the clinical text are further processed for differentiating the chronic illness patients in the historical information of clinical notes from non-chronic illness patients. In order to further mine the information related to the mortality in the text, we learn the time series embedding with Long Short Term Memory networks and the clinical notes embedding with a label aware convolutional neural network. We also propose a scoring function to measure the importance of clinical note sections. Our approach achieved a better AUCPR and AUCROC than competing methods and visual explanations for word importance showed the interpretability improvement of the model.
We have tested our methodology on the MIMIC-III dataset. Contributions of different clinical note sections were uncovered by visualization methods. Our work demonstrates that the introduction of the medical history related information can improve the performance of the mortality prediction. Using label aware convolutional neural networks can further improve the results.
Animal model of cigarette smoke (CS) -induced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the primary testing methodology for drug therapies and studies on pathogenic mechanisms of disease. ...However, researchers have rarely run simultaneous or side-by-side tests of whole-body and nose-only CS exposure in building their mouse models of COPD. We compared and evaluated these two different methods of CS exposure, plus airway Lipopolysaccharides (LPS) inhalation, in building our COPD mouse model. Compared with the control group, CS exposed mice showed significant increased inspiratory resistance, functional residual capacity, right ventricular hypertrophy index, and total cell count in BALF. Moreover, histological staining exhibited goblet cell hyperplasia, lung inflammation, thickening of smooth muscle layer on bronchia, and lung angiogenesis in both methods of CS exposure. Our data indicated that a viable mouse model of COPD can be established by combining the results from whole-body CS exposure, nose-only CS exposure, and airway LPS inhalation testing. However, in our study, we also found that, given the same amount of particulate intake, changes in right ventricular pressure and intimal thickening of pulmonary small artery are a little more serious in nose-only CS exposure method than changes in the whole-body CS exposure method.
The development of photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors plays a critical role in enabling timely intervention and personalized treatment for cardiac injury. Herein, a novel approach is presented for ...the fabrication of highly sensitive PEC biosensor employing Bi2O3/MgIn2S4 heterojunction for the ultrasensitive detection of heart fatty acid binding protein (H-FABP). The Bi2O3/MgIn2S4 heterojunction, synthesized through in-situ growth of MgIn2S4 on Bi2O3 nanoplates, offers superior attributes including a larger specific surface area and more homogeneous distribution, leading to enhanced sensing sensitivity. The well-matched valence and conduction bands of Bi2O3 and MgIn2S4 effectively suppress the recombination of photogenerated carriers and facilitate electron transfer, resulting in a significantly improved photocurrent signal response. And the presence of the secondary antibody marker (ZnSnO3) introduces steric hindrance that hinders electron transfer between ascorbic acid and the photoelectrode, leading to a reduction in photocurrent signal. Additionally, the competition between the ZnSnO3 marker and the Bi2O3/MgIn2S4 heterojunction material for the excitation light source further diminishes the photocurrent signal response. After rigorous repeatability and selectivity tests, the PEC biosensor exhibited excellent performance, and the linear detection range of the biosensor was determined to be 0.05 pg/mL to 100 ng/mL with a remarkable detection limit of 0.029 pg/mL (S/N = 3).
