A sample of 97 males suffering from myocardial infarction was studied in order to determine the influence of psychological variables and emotional states on psychopathology displayed by patients in ...the course of their cardiological recovery. Discriminant analysis revealed that depression in the coronary unit and nonuse of problem-solving strategies were the most sensitive variables to correctly classify psychiatric and nonpsychiatric cases (76.6% of the total sample). Multiple regression analysis of the psychological variables and emotional states showed that severity of psychopathology was directly related to early depressive reaction and use of avoidant strategies. The prevalence of psychiatric disorders was 55.5%, with depression (RDC) being the most frequent diagnosis (59.4%), followed by 'irritable dysphoria' (27%) and anxiety disorders (RDC; 21.6%).
From a selected sample of 97 males suffering from a first myocardial infarction, 67 patients were studied to ascertain the influence of denial mechanisms (DM) on their cardiological and psychological ...outcome. There were no differences among high deniers and low deniers with respect to the cardiological outcome, but high deniers showed less anxiety and depressive reactions both in the coronary unit and 1 month later, and also presented less psychopathology in general. In the last evaluation, one year after leaving the hospital (
N = 52), there was no difference among deniers and non deniers in demand for psychiatric attention.
Test whether high dose corticosteroid pulse therapy (HDCPT) with either methylprednisolone or dexamethasone is associated with increased survival in COVID-19 patients at risk of hyper-inflammatory ...response. Provide some initial diagnostic criteria using laboratory markers to stratify these patients.
This is a prospective observational study, 318 met the inclusion criteria. 64 patients (20.1%) were treated with HDCPT by using at least 1.5mg/kg/24h of methylprednisolone or dexamethasone equivalent. A multivariate Cox regression (controlling for co-morbidities and other therapies) was carried out to determine whether HDCPT (among other interventions) was associated with decreased mortality. We also carried out a 30-day time course analysis of laboratory markers between survivors and non-survivors, to identify potential markers for patient stratification.
HDCPT showed a statistically significant decrease in mortality (HR = 0.087 95% CI 0.021-0.36; P < 0.001). 30-day time course analysis of laboratory marker tests showed marked differences in pro-inflammatory markers between survivors and non-survivors. As diagnostic criteria to define the patients at risk of developing a COVID-19 hyper-inflammatory response, we propose the following parameters (IL-6 > = 40 pg/ml, and/or two of the following: C-reactive protein > = 100 mg/L, D-dimer > = 1000 ng/ml, ferritin > = 500 ng/ml and lactate dehydrogenase > = 300 U/L).
HDCPT can be an effective intervention to increase COVID-19 survival rates in patients at risk of developing a COVID-19 hyper-inflammatory response, laboratory marker tests can be used to stratify these patients who should be given HDCPT. This study is not a randomized clinical trial (RCT). Future RCTs should be carried out to confirm the efficacy of HDCPT to increase the survival rates of COVID-19.
Nanoparticles (NPs) based on the polymer poly (lactide-co-glycolide) acid (PLGA) have been widely studied in developing delivery systems for drugs and therapeutic biomolecules, due to the ...biocompatible and biodegradable properties of the PLGA. In this work, a synthesis method for bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2)-loaded PLGA NPs was developed and optimized, in order to carry out and control the release of BMP-2, based on the double-emulsion (water/oil/water, W/O/W) solvent evaporation technique. The polymeric surfactant Pluronic F68 was used in the synthesis procedure, as it is known to have an effect on the reduction of the size of the NPs, the enhancement of their stability, and the protection of the encapsulated biomolecule. Spherical solid polymeric NPs were synthesized, showing a reproducible multimodal size distribution, with diameters between 100 and 500 nm. This size range appears to allow the protein to act on the cell surface and at the cytoplasm level. The effect of carrying BMP-2 co-adsorbed with bovine serum albumin on the NP surface was analyzed. The colloidal properties of these systems (morphology by SEM, hydrodynamic size, electrophoretic mobility, temporal stability, protein encapsulation, and short-term release profile) were studied. The effect of both BMP2-loaded NPs on the proliferation, migration, and osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stromal cells from human alveolar bone (ABSC) was also analyzed in vitro.
The issues of wastewater treatment and the reuse of water are of great importance, especially in areas where the shortage of conventional resources is a structural problem, as it is in the case of ...Spain. Wastewater reuse is a valid mechanism to avoid problems derived from droughts and water scarcity. It allows access to water resources in areas with water restrictions and to prevent futures scenarios, due to it being expected that water consumption will double by 2050 over the world. Thus, the likelihood that this unconventional, strategic resource would become scarce is unquestionable, particularly in cases where water planning and exploitation systems prioritize the preservation, protection, and improvement of water quality, as well as the sustainable and efficient use of natural resources. This paper shows how wastewater treatment and reuse are linked, as the reuse of wastewater is associated with a previous regeneration, and both of them are essential tools for maximizing environmental outcomes, as called for in the European Union Directives.

Poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) is one of the most widely used synthetic polymers for development of delivery systems for drugs and therapeutic biomolecules and as component of tissue engineering ...applications. Its properties and versatility allow it to be a reference polymer in manufacturing of nano- and microparticles to encapsulate and deliver a wide variety of hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules. It additionally facilitates and extends its use to encapsulate biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids that can be released in a controlled way. This review focuses on the use of nano/microparticles of PLGA as a delivery system of one of the most commonly used growth factors in bone tissue engineering, the bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2). Thus, all the needed requirements to reach a controlled delivery of BMP2 using PLGA particles as a main component have been examined. The problems and solutions for the adequate development of this system with a great potential in cell differentiation and proliferation processes under a bone regenerative point of view are discussed.
Evaluation of the external genitalia is an important part of prenatal ultrasound. However, there is no standardized methodology that includes biometric measurements and normative data to be able to ...carry out this evaluation.
To develop a standardized methodology for fetal genital biometry and obtain reference values for use in mid-trimester ultrasound.
A prospective cross-sectional study was used. 273 male and 253 female fetuses of normal, singleton pregnancies at 18 to 22 weeks were included. Measurements of fetal penis length, penile width and transverse scrotal diameter in male fetuses and bilabial diameter in female fetuses were performed by transabdominal ultrasound. Reference values were calculated for each gestational week.
Realization of the open-legs axial plane is described as a working methodology. Normative data for penile length, penile width, transverse scrotal diameter and bilabial diameter are defined, including mean, minimum and maximum values, range, and 5th, 10th, 90th and 95th percentiles.
We have provided a standardized methodology using the open-legs axial plane, which would integrate the main measurements. In addition with the normative data constructed from their use, we hope to be able to improve the external genitalia assessment and diagnosis of genital anomalies in mid-trimester ultrasound.

•A double-emulsion formulation for lysozyme-loaded PLGA NPs have been optimized.•PLGA NPs with Pluronic® F68 (WF68) incorporated in the water phase have a dual size.•WF68 PLGA NPs ...have an adequate protein encapsulation-release equilibrium.•Interfacial studies show the main role of lysozyme-poloxamer interactions.•WF68 PLGA NPs allow dual (outer and intra) protein delivery in cellular assays.
Because of the biocompatible and biodegradable properties of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA), nanoparticles (NPs) based on this polymer have been widely studied for drug/biomolecule delivery and long-term sustained-release. In this work, two different formulation methods for lysozyme-loaded PLGA NPs have been developed and optimized based on the double-emulsion (water/oil/water, W/O/W) solvent evaporation technique. They differ mainly in the phase in which the surfactant (Pluronic® F68) is added: water (W-F68) and oil (O-F68). The colloidal properties of these systems (morphology by SEM and STEM, hydrodynamic size by DLS and NTA, electrophoretic mobility, temporal stability in different media, protein encapsulation, release, and bioactivity) have been analyzed. The interaction surfactant-protein depending on the formulation procedure has been characterized by surface tension and dilatational rheology. Finally, cellular uptake by human mesenchymal stromal cells and cytotoxicity for both systems have been analyzed.
Spherical hard NPs are made by the two methods However, in one case, they are monodisperse with diameters of around 120nm (O-F68), and in the other case, a polydisperse system of NPs with diameters between 100 and 500nm is found (W-F68). Protein encapsulation efficiency, release and bioactivity are maintained better by the W-F68 formulation method. This multimodal system is found to be a promising “dual delivery” system for encapsulating hydrophilic proteins with strong biological activity at the cell-surface and cytoplasmic levels.
We report a case of a twin-reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence complication in monochorionic triplets, in which both normal fetuses were directly connected to the umbilical cord of the ...acardiac fetus, thus both acting as a pump twin. Doppler ultrasound showed a significant waveform pattern with two superposed systolic waveforms in the same vessel. After birth, placental findings confirmed the existence of two direct pump twins. The Doppler pattern described here may be of help to distinguish the existence of two pump twins in a triplet monochorionic pregnancy with TRAP.
