Effectively evaluating environmental degradation in the Korean Peninsula is of great significance for promoting sustainable development in Northeast Asia. However, previous studies mostly focused on single environmental element, which could not comprehensively and effectively reveal the environmental degradation dynamics. In this study, we aimed to reveal and analyze the environmental degradation in the Korean Peninsula from 2000 to 2022 using the Environmental Degradation Index (EDI) developed by considering multiple environmental elements. The results indicated that the environment of the Korean Peninsula exhibited a significantly degraded trend, with the degraded area (65,118.75 km2) accounting for approximately 29.96 % of the entire peninsula during 2000–2022. The North Korean environment showed a significant degradation trend, while the environmental conditions in South Korea have shown a trend of improvement. By comparing these two countries, North Korea has undergone more significant environmental degradation. The environmentally degraded area of North Korea was 37,142.75 km2, which was 1.33 times that of the degraded area in South Korea. Cropland expansion and forest loss were major causes of environmental deterioration in North Korea. North Korea and South Korea could strengthen intergovernmental environmental cooperation to promote sustainable development on the Korean Peninsula as well as Northeast Asia.
Helicobacter pylori (HP) is the primary etiologic factor that induces events in the immune system that lead to peptic ulcers. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are an important part of the innate immune ...system, as they play pivotal roles in pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) recognition of HP as well host-associated damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Recent advancements such as COX-2 production, LPS recognition through TLR2, CagL, and CagY protein of HP activating TLR5, TLR9 activation via type IV secretion system (T4SS) using DNA transfer, TLR polymorphisms, their adaptor molecules, cytokines, and other factors play a significant role in PUD. Thus, some novel PUD treatments including Chuyou Yuyang granules, function by TLR4/NF-κB signaling pathway suppression and TNF-α and IL-18 inhibition also rely on TLR signaling. Similarly glycyrrhetinic acid (GA) treatment activates TLR-4 in Ana-1 cells not via TRIF, but via MYD88 expression, which is significantly upregulated to cure PUD. Therefore, understanding TLR signaling complexity and its resultant immune modulation after host-pathogen interactions is pivotal to drug and vaccine development for other diseases as well including cancer and recent pandemic COVID-19. In this review, we summarize the TLRs and HP interaction; its pathophysiology-related signaling pathways, polymorphisms, and pharmaceutical approaches toward PUD.
This study investigates the interannual variation of summer surface air temperature over Northeast Asia(NEA) and its associated circulation anomalies.Two leading modes for the temperature variability ...over NEA are obtained by EOF analysis.The first EOF mode is characterized by a homogeneous temperature anomaly over NEA and therefore is called the NEA mode.This anomaly extends from southeast of Lake Baikal to Japan,with a central area in Northeast China.The second EOF mode is characterized by a seesaw pattern,showing a contrasting distribution between East Asia(specifically including the Changbai Mountains in Northeast China,Korea,and Japan) and north of this region.This mode is named the East Asia(EA) mode.Both modes contribute equivalently to the temperature variability in EA.The two leading modes are associated with different circulation anomalies.A warm NEA mode is associated with a positive geopotential height anomaly over NEA and thus a weakened upper-tropospheric westerly jet.On the other hand,a warm EA mode is related to a positive height anomaly over EA and a northward displaced jet.In addition,the NEA mode tends to be related to the Eurasian teleconnection pattern,while the EA mode is associated with the East Asia-Pacific/PacificJapan pattern.

Timely and effective environmental sustainability assessment is critical for promoting sustainable development in the transnational area of Changbai Mountain (TACM). However, due to the limitations of the existing environmental degradation index, the environmental sustainability in this transnational area was still not comprehensively evaluated. In this study, the main objectives were to construct a comprehensive environmental sustainability index (CESI) by integrating four environmental elements of ecological, soil, water as well as air, and evaluate the environmental sustainability of TACM from 2000 to 2020. The results indicated that the environmental sustainability of the TACM exhibited a significantly degraded trend. The area of degraded environmental sustainability (73147.16 km2) accounted for 44.35 % of the total area of TACM. In the three subregions, the environmental sustainability showed decreasing trends in the subregions of China and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), whereas showed an upward trend in Russia. In particular, the DPRK’s side exhibited the most significant degradation, where the area of reduced environmental sustainability (40405.60 km2) was 1.25 times and 129.98 times larger than that on the Chinese and Russian sides, respectively. Forest loss and cropland expansion were the primary reasons for the degradation of environmental sustainability in the TACM. The major findings of this study could contribute to our understanding of environmental sustainability and will be helpful to promote the sustainable development in this transnational area as well as Northeast Asia.
Liver fibrosis develops as a result of severe liver damage and is considered a major clinical concern throughout the world. Many factors are crucial for liver fibrosis progression. While advancements ...have been made to understand this disease, no effective pharmacological drug and treatment strategies have been established that can effectively prevent liver fibrosis or even could halt the fibrotic process. Most of those advances in curing liver fibrosis have been aimed towards mitigating the causes of fibrosis, including the development of potent antivirals to inhibit the hepatitis virus. It is not practicable for many individuals; however, a liver transplant becomes the only suitable alternative. A liver transplant is an expensive procedure. Thus, there is a significant need to identify potential targets of liver fibrosis and the development of such agents that can effectively treat or reverse liver fibrosis by targeting them. Researchers have identified hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) in the last 16 years as important transcription factors driving several facets of liver fibrosis, making them possible therapeutic targets. The latest knowledge on HIFs and their possible role in liver fibrosis, along with the cell-specific activities of such transcription factors that how they play role in liver fibrosis progression, is discussed in this review.
Stool characteristics are of great value to assess diseases, but patients knew little. E-learning applied in health popularization and patient education is booming. In China, WeChat applets has ...advantages of abundant users, convenient access and low cost, which may be a great media in patient education on stool. This preliminary study aims to develop and evaluate a stool card WeChat applet. We collected stools images during 2020 to 2022 in the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, constructed a stool card applet named the Doctor Friend Primary Screening Stool Card (DFPSSC) and evaluated it. Eligible participants were divided into the applet, traditional paper media and control group. We implement a series of tests to evaluate the effectiveness. 20 clinicians and participants using the DFPSSC completed a questionnaire to evaluate the usability. We developed the DFPSSC for an E-learning approach. Of 108 volunteers, 97 completed the DFPSSC learning. No significant pretest differences were found among the three groups (P = 0.303). Applet group had significantly higher posttest scores than pretest scores in intervention (P < 0.001, d = 1.68) and simulation (P = 0.006) test, and it had higher scores than other two group (P < 0.001). 63% participants and 59% clinicians strongly agree or agree to the usability of DFSSC. This preliminary study verified that the DFPSSC can effectively improve participants' knowledge of feces, making it an effective clinical tool for patient education and the avoidance of treatment delay.

In this ...study, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) from host rats were transduced with an adenoviral vector labelled with green fluorescent protein (EGFP) to overexpress hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). was evaluated using serological, biochemical and histological approaches. We compared the rats in the HGF-BM-MSC group with those in the other groups (rats treated with BM-MSCs, rats treated with HGF and untreated rats (Controls)) in detail. The localisation of EGFP-tagged BM-MSCs in the injured liver was evaluated using a microscope, and the cells co-expressed hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α, albumin and cytokeratin 18. After treatment for 4 weeks, the HGF-BM-MSC, BM-MSC and HGF groups exhibited increased protein and mRNA levels of hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α, albumin and cytokeratin 18, but decreased levels of aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and total bilirubin. These findings indicate that BM-MSC transplantation and HGF application have great potential for the treatment of hepatocirrhosis.
Hair follicle-derived mesenchymal stem cells (HF-MSCs) show considerable therapeutic potential for liver cirrhosis (LC). To improve the effectiveness of naïve HF-MSC treatments on LC, we used ...bioinformatic tools to identify an exogenous gene targeting HSCs among the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in LC to modify HF-MSCs. Extracellular matrix protein 1 (ECM1) was identified as a DEG that was significantly downregulated in the cirrhotic liver. Then, ECM1-overexpressing HF-MSCs (ECM1-HF-MSCs) were transplanted into mice with LC to explore the effectiveness and correlated mechanism of gene-overexpressing HF-MSCs on LC. The results showed that ECM1-HF-MSCs significantly improved liver function and liver pathological injury in LC after cell therapy relative to the other treatment groups. Moreover, we found that ECM1-HF-MSCs homed to the injured liver and expressed the hepatocyte-specific surface markers ALB, CK18, and AFP. In addition, hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation was significantly inhibited in the cell treatment groups in vivo and in vitro, especially in the ECM1-HF-MSC group. Additionally, TGF-β/Smad signal inhibition was the most significant in the ECM1-HF-MSC group in vivo and in vitro. The findings indicate that the genetic modification of HF-MSCs with bioinformatic tools may provide a broad perspective for precision treatment of LC.
Monitoring extent and severity is vital in the ulcerative colitis (UC) follow-up, however, current assessment is complex and low cost-effectiveness. We aimed to develop a routine blood-based clinical ...decision support tool, Jin's model, to investigate the extent and severity of UC. The multicentre retrospective cohort study recruited 975 adult UC inpatients and sub-grouped into training, internal validation and external validation set. Model was developed by logistics regression for the extent via Montreal classification and for the severity via Mayo score, Truelove and Witts score (TWS), Mayo endoscopic score (MES) and Degree of Ulcerative colitis Burden of Luminal Inflammation (DUBLIN) score. In Montreal classification, left-sided and extensive versus proctitis model achieved area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.78 and 0.81 retrospectively. For severity, Mayo score model, TWS model, MES model and DUBLIN score model achieved an AUROC of 0.81, 0.70, 0.74 and 0.70 retrospectively. The models also were evaluated with satisfactory calibration and clinical unity. Jin's model was free with open access at http://jinmodel.com:3000/ . Jin's model is a noninvasive, convenient, and efficient approach to assess the extent and severity of UC.
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and recurrent disease without satisfactory treatment strategies. Dental pulp stem cell (DPSC) transplantation has been proposed as a potential therapy for UC. ...This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of the rat hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) gene transduced into DPSCs for UC.
The therapeutic effects of HGF-DPSCs transplanted intravenously into a rat model of UC induced by 5% dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) were compared with the other treatment groups (LV-HGF group, DPSCs group and GFP-DPSCs group). Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry were used to observe the localization and proliferation of HGF-DPSCs at the site of colon injury. The expression levels of inflammatory factors were detected by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-PCR) and western blotting. The oxidative stress markers were detected by ELISA. DAI scores and body weight changes were used to macroscopically evaluate the treatment of rats in each group.
Immunofluorescence and immunohistochemistry assays showed that HGF-DPSCs homed to colon injury sites and colocalized with intestinal stem cell (ISC) markers (Bmi1, Musashi1 and Sox9) and significantly promoted protein expression (Bmi1, Musashi1, Sox9 and PCNA). Anti-inflammatory cytokine (TGF-β and IL-10) expression was the highest in the HGF-DPSCs group compared with the other treatment groups, while the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and INF-γ) was the lowest. Additionally, the oxidative stress response results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) expression decreased while superoxide dismutase (SOD) expression increased, especially in the HGF-DPSCs group. The DAI scores showed a downward trend with time in the five treatment groups, whereas body weight increased, and the changes were most prominent in the HGF-DPSCs group.
The study indicated that HGF-DPSCs can alleviate injuries to the intestinal mucosa by transdifferentiating into ISC-like cells, promoting ISC-like cell proliferation, suppressing inflammatory responses and reducing oxidative stress damage, which provides new ideas for the clinical treatment of UC.
