Park prirode Medvednica, kao zelena oaza nadomak glavnog grada, iznimno je vrijedan resurs za opuštanje i rekreaciju stanovništva grada Zagreba u prirodnom okruženju, ali i sve značajnija atrakcija ...za turiste koji posjećuju grad Zagreb i okolicu. Kako su pritisci na taj zaštićeni prostor sve izraženiji u urbanističkom, sportskorekreacijskom i turistički razvojnom smislu, smatralo se važnim ispitati stavove i percepciju stanovnika grada Zagreba prema razvoju zimskog sportskog turizma na području Parka. Podaci za ovo kvantitativno istraživanje prikupljeni su anketnim ispitivanjem na uzorku od 309 stalnih stanovnika grada Zagreba. Istraživanje je pokazalo da stanovnici hrvatske metropole zimi često posjećuju Park te da taj prostor ipak ima veći značaj i vrijednost za gradsko stanovništvo, nego kao turistička atrakcija za privremene posjetitelje. Iako velika većina ispitanika smatra kako su ekonomske koristi od zimskog sportskog turizma od velikog značaja za očuvanje Parka i njegov daljnji razvoj, svjesni su da takav razvoj vrši dodatan pritisak na održivost zaštićenog područja. Među ograničenjima daljnjeg razvoja zimskog sportskog turizma ispitanici primarno vide u ograničenom prostornom kapacitetu i nedostatnoj infrastrukturi, ali i u neizbježnim klimatskim promjenama koje štetno utječu na redovitost održavanja međunarodnih skijaških utrka i imidž Medvednice kao destinacije zimskog sportskog turizma. Nalazi ovog istraživanja ukazuju na potrebu povećane brige o raspoloživim resursima, kao i pomnog promišljanja o mogućnostima i posljedicama daljnjeg razvoja zimskog sportskog turizma na promatranom prostoru. Originalnost ovog rada očituje se u dizajnu istraživanja i njegovoj primjeni na specifičnom prostoru, što do sada u tom obliku nije znanstveno istraživano.
In the context of current deglobalization trends this research aims to investigate the need for changes in tourism supply system by analysing perception and expectations of procurement managers and ...suppliers of goods and services related to growing inflationary pressure on business costs and raising concerns about vulnerability and instability of the global supply chains. Based on survey and semi-structured interviews conducted among hotel procurement managers and local suppliers in popular seaside tourism destinations in Croatia, this research provides empirical evidences of the necessity to strengthen local capacities for the production of goods and service delivery using local resources in accordance to the principles of sustainable tourism development. The greatest concern respondents showed regarding the rising prices of energy, which was expected due to actual political situation in Europe. Study also provides some policy recommendations for ‘reinventing’ local production of goods and services for tourism-related purposes.

This article is primarily focused on medical tourism, one of the most interesting aspects of health tourism development, originally conceived as a marketing tool for attracting international demand ...for health care services. The purpose of this article is to summarize the rationale of promoting medical tourism development in developing countries like Croatia, and to assess the opportunities and constraints of such product development in present socio-economic conditions. The theoretical background and discussion presented in this article were done with reference to respective publications and web-sites. Also, authors have performed a SWOT analysis and proposed some policy recommendations for further development of medical tourism in Croatia.
The value of co-creation among destination stakeholders is becoming an increasingly popular tool for creating unique tourism products and preserving local cultural values and identity. The main ...purpose of this study was to investigate what factors determine residents’ satisfaction with the process of co-creating a traditional cultural event with a local destination management organization (DMO). To conduct a survey of residents, a questionnaire was developed that included four main concepts: satisfaction with the co-creation, the role of the DMO in the co-creation process, the importance of the event to local food and wine and personal attachment to the event. An explanatory Principal Component Analysis (PCA) with Oblimin rotation was performed. The findings suggest that the DMO’s central role in the co-creation process and the importance of the event to a local food and wine are significant predictors of the residents’ satisfaction with co-creation. However, a personal attachment to the event did not prove to be a significant predictor of overall satisfaction with the co-creation process. By exploring, in detail, the inner thoughts of a destination’s key stakeholders, it is possible to improve the co-creation process and ultimately create greater value for all involved.
Although the importance of tourism for the Croatian economy is widely recognized and well documented, the issues related to the existence of shadow economy in tourism are not yet fully investigated ...and resolved. In spite of many attempts to estimate the size and impacts of shadow economy in tourism, there is still much controversy regarding the scope of the research area and the appropriateness of methodological approaches used to quantify this complex phenomenon. The present study aimed to (1) summarize the existing body of empirical evidence related to the shadow economy in tourism, with special reference to the case of Croatia, and to (2) shed some more light on additional aspects and variables which have been found to be important determinants for better understanding of the nature of the shadow economy in tourism. In order to reduce the adverse impacts of the shadow economy in tourism, some policy recommendations are suggested.
The purpose of this conceptual study is to define the possibilities and constraints of assessing the economic impact of tangible cultural heritage on the economic sustainability of a tourism ...destination. To achieve this goal, the following were critically analysed: (1) strengths and limitations of previously used assessment approaches and techniques; and (2) sustainable development indicators for urban tourism destinations that contain world-class cultural heritage sites. The case study used in this research is an urban cultural heritage site listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, namely the Historical Complex of Split with the Palace of Diocletian, Croatia, and the associated tourism destination setting. Observational and case study methods were used. Despite all previous efforts to prevent miscalculations and develop a technique that would best suit the tangible cultural heritage valuation process, findings suggest that each cultural heritage site has unique characteristics and requires its own approach to assessing its value and impact. Moreover, such findings have further implications for the UNESCO World Heritage List and the management of World Heritage sites.
At the beginning of the new millennium, development of tourism in the European Union took on substantially different characteristics after the enlargement of the EU to the countries of Central and ...Eastern Europe. On the basis of the single market and the liberalization of movement of people, goods, services and capital among EU member states, enlargement put emphasis on the capital cities of so called "New Europe" as important political, economic and cultural centers of high tourist value and increasing number of visitors. The purpose of this research is based on a comparison of trends in tourism development in the countries of the "New Europe" and their capital cities before and after accession of the countries to the EU, and to assess the impact of Croatia's accession to the EU on the development of tourism in the city of Zagreb. The research findings reveal the existence of a certain link between the trends of tourism development in 12 capital cities of the "New Europe" and those in the city of Zagreb. On these grounds, data analysis and impact assessment of Croatia's accession to the EU have been performed in order to estimate future trends in tourist flows and the volume of accommodation facilities in the city of Zagreb. Authors have highlighted some tourism development opportunities in the city of Zagreb in accordance with the available resources, existing tourism infrastructure and built image on the European tourism market. A fundamental characteristic of the Croatian economy is it's biasness towards residential investments. In attempt to realize and understand consequences of the European Union (EU) integration, it is ...also necessary to analyze the structure of the Croatian economy. The most important export industry in Croatia is tourism and as it is generally known, according to the most of the general equilibrium models, major positive benefits in the tourist specialized region and/or country emerge out of the fixed factors in nontradable sector, namely land and real estate property. In the framework of EU integration, tourism driven economy and accompanied real estate market creates an attractive option for the international capital flows. The real estate market in Croatia is booming together with a global real estate market elsewhere in the world. Croatian peculiarity is the fact that real estate market is booming much more in the economically underdeveloped coastal area compared to economically prosperous areas of Zagreb and north-western Croatia.
Ecotourism improves nature protection and brings many benefits to local communities, however in some cases its negative environmental and socioeconomic impacts may become a serious threat to ...destination's resources and sustainability. Since the continuous growth in number of visitors to national parks is increasingly leading to the excessive development of ecotourism, public institutions of national parks are forced to seek innovative approaches and concepts that would ensure economic sustainability, but simultaneously reduce harmful impacts to the environment and local community. The purpose of this qualitative research is to explore the extent to which responsible consumption is applicable in ecotourism, specifically in national parks and their immediate surroundings, but also to explore the scope of activities by which public institutions of national parks in Croatia promote responsible consumption among their visitors. The focus of this study was on how national parks promote and encourage their visitors to become responsible consumers and how do they communicate their own efforts in raising awareness about such practices. The framework of this research is based on ecotourism, perceived as the least consumption-oriented special interest tourism, which may imply that ecotourism encourages visitors to behave responsibly towards the environment and the local community. The case study used in this paper encompasses all national parks in Croatia, namely their public institutions which are responsible for park management and wildlife conservation. Based on primary and secondary data, the research results showed that public institutions of all national parks in Croatia practice and conduct different activities that promote responsible consumption, however the extent and scope of such activities depends on their available human and financial resources. The findings also highlighted many opportunities and actions that can be implemented in order to encourage visitors to be more responsible to environment and local community. To advance a scientific discussion on the concept of responsible consumption as well as to encourage public institutions of national parks to intensify the use of such practices, nine policy recommendations were provided.
