Consumers can influence markets through their consumption behaviour—whether by consciously choosing or rejecting certain products and consumption patterns, or by loudly protesting, for example in ...demonstrations against climate change. But how far does the power of consumers extend? How capable of conflict are they in the face of often heterogeneous interests, differing objectives and, at best, weakly developed group identities? What forms of interest articulation are available and how are they used? What role do consumer policy, companies and the digital revolution play in this regard? Museums of history and contemporary culture face many challenges in the modern age. One is how to react to processes of Europeanization and globalization, which require more cross-border cooperation ...and different ways of telling stories for visitors. This book investigates how museums exhibit Europe. Based on research in nearly 100 museums across the Continent and interviews with cultural policy makers and museum curators, it studies the growing transnational activities of state institutions, societal organizations, and people in the museum field such as attempts to Europeanize collection policy and collections as well as different strategies for making narratives more transnational like telling stories of European integration as shared history and discussing both inward and outward migration as a common experience and challenge. The book thus provides fascinating insights into a fast-changing museum landscape in Europe with wider implications for cultural policy and museums in other world regions.

So ist es der Harald Schmidt Show gelungen, halbironische Sprechweisen ...diskursfähig zu machen, die bis heute Teil populärkultureller Unterhaltung sind. Die Beiträgerinnen und Beiträger des Bandes untersuchen vor diesem Hintergrund die ›Methode Harald Schmidt‹, d.h. die Unterminierung gängiger Norm- und Wertvorstellungen bei gleichzeitiger Affirmation derselben. Die zentrale These lautet: Harald Schmidt hat grundlegende Voraussetzungen dafür geschaffen, im deutschsprachigen Raum eine weitestgehend neuartige Populärkultur ästhetisch und kulturpraktisch zu etablieren.
This article deals with the cultural-historical change of public self-presentation and construction of identity at the end of the 19th century with the examples of William F. Cody (“Buffalo Bill”) ...and Karl May. The impact of the various public, both real and virtual, stages, the change of selfrepresentation as response to public reaction, and the interaction of public and private self-perception will be examined in particular with regard to the question how authenticity and illusion are negotiated individually and socially (within the media and publicly). The importance of physical presentation (as a sign of authenticity) and the increasing necessity to claim and proof (and thus to simulate) “reality” are particular objects of study. Both sample cases, within the specific cultural-historical context of their time, demonstrate change and diversification of public self-presentations which already display in their increasing virtuosity and plurality important aspects of modern mass mediality.
Wohin entwickelt sich die Konsumgesellschaft? Wie ändern sich die Einstellungen und Verhaltensweisen der Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher? Zeichnet sich ein Wandel vom industriellen Massenkonsum zum ...individualisierten Digitalkonsum ab? Diesen Fragen widmete sich die dritte Jahrestagung des bundesweiten Netzwerks Verbraucherforschung, deren Ergebnisse der vorliegende Band dokumentiert. Tiefgreifende Transformationen in der Geschichte des Konsums, wie sie die Industrielle Revolution und die Digitalisierung darstellen, können nur durch disziplinübergreifende Forschungsanstrengungen verstanden werden. Neben den klassischen Fächern der Verbraucherwissenschaften wie Wirtschafts-, Rechts-, Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften kommen daher in diesem Band auch historiografische und kulturwissenschaftliche Perspektiven zum Tragen. Die Veröffentlichung hat zum Ziel, den Austausch aktueller Ergebnisse der verbraucherbezogenen Forschung in Wissenschaft und Politik zu fördern und den Wissenstransfer zu stärken.

Europe is a cacophony. In 1987 John Cage’sEuroperapremiered at the Frankfurt Opera House. For this piece the American composer used both familiar and unfamiliar parts of eighteenth- and ...nineteenth-century operas: ‘For 200 years the Europeans have sent us their operas. Now I am returning them all to them’ (Beyst 2005). Indeed,Europeraconsists of ‘ready-made-music’. Not one phrase was composed by Cage himself. Instead, the different arias were put together by a randomiser, and so robbed of any formal or substantial coherence. Cage aimed to eliminate any context that would makeEuroperaa coherent work.
