Global research on medical and health-related issues has experienced a profound reconfiguration over the last 30 years. The rise of new areas of inquiry has transformed the medical research landscape ...as staff with medical training gradually relinquished their prominence and specialists from other disciplines raised their profile within research teams. Given this, research priorities seem to be shifting increasingly towards laboratory-based and innovation-oriented research lines. The unfolding of these shifts in nonhegemonic countries such as Mexico is still to be understood. This paper surveys structural changes in Mexican medical research from 1993 to 2021 by observing temporal aggregation of authorships, emerging thematic features, and institutional affiliation patterns. It also explores correlations between these findings and their possible explanations. The results allow us to empirically describe significant changes in medical research done in Mexico. We detected periods of stability in authorship allowing us to describe stages in the accumulation of research and development (R&D) capabilities. The identified semantic patterns allowed us to characterize this transformation, observing subsequent stages of an accumulation and specialization process that began in the mid-1990s. Moreover, we found divergent thematic and institutional patterns that point towards a growing gap between research conducted in health institutions and scientific ones.
Significant progress has been made in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (SFN) within Latin America (LATAM), which can be attributed to the rapid advancements in technology and a growing pool ...of expertise. However, despite the growing importance of this field, a comprehensive scientometric analysis of LATAM contributions is still lacking. The aim of this study is to shed light on the top-cited articles in the field authored by LATAM researchers. A search of the Scopus database was performed using specific keywords in the field of SFN to retrieve the top 100 most cited articles. Only those with LATAM affiliation for the first or corresponding position were included. The 100 top-cited articles were published between 1978 and 2019 across 47 different journals. On average, these articles had a citation count of 97.2 citations. A total of 635 LATAM authors were identified, including 145 women. Notably, the 5 most productive and impactful authors were Velasco F., Velasco M., Velasco A.L., Cukiert A., and Jiménez F. Within the field of SFN, epilepsy accounted for 47% of the documents, while the remaining 53% encompassed research on psychiatric diseases, movement disorders, translational research, pain, and electrical mapping. Epilepsia emerged as the journal with the highest number of articles. Mexico and Brazil contributed the most articles, with the University of São Paulo and the Hospital General de Mexico being the most productive institutions. This scientometric analysis highlights the impactful research contributions from the region, identifies influential authors and institutions, and emphasizes the necessity for additional collaboration and exploration.
Purpose
Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IOMM) has been used worldwide in the attempt to reduce postsurgical neurological deficits, however, most of the publications are from developed ...countries. There is a global bibliometric analysis of IOMN in spinal surgery, however, the contribution of Latin America (LA) is not mentioned. The aim of this study is to describe scientific productivity, patterns of publications, and thematic trends of IONM in LA.
Methods
Data was collected using Scopus database, by searching scientific articles with LA affiliation, using 18 keywords. We excluded duplicates, not original articles, reviews, surveys, and articles not related to humans. Articles were analyzed and classified as follows: year of publication, language of the original document, journals metrics, country, IONM modality, etiology, location of surgery, medical specialties, and outcome. Descriptive statistics were used.
Results
We obtained 8,699 scientific articles of which 41 scientific articles from 7 LA countries were selected. Mexico has the highest number of publications. In most countries, supratentorial location showed the highest frequency. Somatosensory evoked potentials and electrocorticography were the most performed modalities. Neurosurgery was the most involved specialty of our 41 scientific articles, and 95.1% of these publications concluded that IONM is useful to guide surgical procedures.
Conclusions
Mexico and Brazil have led IONM publications in LA. The lower reference in publications of visual evoked potentials and brainstem auditory evoked potentials IONM modalities, could be considered in the future to boost tailored research in LA.
The outbreak of COVID-19 has created a landslide of publications, from different sources and unequal impact. We considered that the first 3 months are crucial to understand how knowledge has been ...generated by performing a bibliometric analysis, including the citations to these articles to guide researchers in exploring this field, and to evaluate the relationship between confirmed COVID-19 cases and deaths with the number of papers per country.
Scientific publications were obtained from PubMed (January-March 2020) and their citations during the first 6 months retrieved from the Scopus database. An analysis of the number of papers by country, approach (type and category of publication), and impact was made. A multiple linear regression model was implemented to analyze the correlation between the number of publications and confirmed cases and deaths.
A total of 2,530 publications were analyzed with 59,104 citations (23.4 citations/article), written by authors from 67 countries. China was the country with more publications (988, 39%) and more citations (36,416, 63%) followed by the United States with 423 articles (16.7%) and 7,458 citations (12.6%). The coauthorship network identified 10,756 authors. According to the multivariate analysis, both confirmed cases and deaths were significantly correlated with the number of publications per country (corrected by population size and gross domestic product).
The correlation with the number of publications suggests that cases and deaths had some impact on the medical literature, reflecting how rapidly the scientific community has been on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19.
Stereotactic and functional neurosurgery (SFN) is a rapidly evolving field and some emerging countries, especially Mexico, have made significant contributions to this discipline. A bibliometric ...analysis has never been performed in Latin America, and this would be particularly important to show the areas that remain poorly studied, and design research strategies for the future.
Scopus was queried using keywords pertaining to functional neurosurgery, restricting the affiliation country to Mexico, and considering documents published after 1949. Added to the initial search, a complementary literature exploration by author, considering the publications of the most productive neurosurgeons, was performed. A descriptive statistical analysis was carried out.
From 5,109 articles, only 371 were eligible. Scientific production has gradually increased with time. Epilepsy (31%) and movement disorders (27.4%) were the most studied neurological conditions, whereas the other 41.6% corresponded to pain, behavior disorders, spinal cord injuries, neuromodulation, stereotactic biopsies, and SFN history. Level of evidence was predominantly level V (59.1%). Publication output is highly skewed to Mexico City, which represents 78.4% of national production. Relative to factors associated with impact of research, publications in English had more citations (28.5 mean citations per paper), and journals with an impact factor greater than one had more than 10 mean citations per paper.
Mexico has experienced an increase in the productivity of SFN literature, addressing the most prevalent issues in the country (epilepsy and motor disorders). However, it is necessary to report studies with a higher level of evidence, as well as to decentralize the research collaborating with national institutions outside Mexico City. On the other hand, it is imperative to promote scientific production in English and in high-impact indexed journals to increase the visibility of our production. We would like to call upon our colleagues in other countries to reproduce our methodology, in order to determine the factors associated with the impact and productivity on SFN research.

Consideramos que los primeros tres meses son cruciales para comprender ...cómo se ha generado el conocimiento mediante la realización de un análisis bibliométrico, incluyendo las citas a estos artículos para guiar a los investigadores en la exploración de este campo y evaluar la relación entre los casos confirmados de COVID-19, y las muertes con el número de artículos por país. Métodos: Realizamos un análisis del número de artículos de PubMed (enero-marzo) por país, enfoque, e impacto (citas de Scopus durante los primeros seis meses). Se implementó regresión lineal múltiple para analizar la correlación entre el número de publicaciones y los casos y muertes confirmados. Resultados: Se analizaron un total de 2,530 publicaciones con 59104 citas (23,4 citas/artículo), escritas por autores de 67 países. China fue el país con más publicaciones (988, 39%) y más citas (36,416, 63%), seguido de Estados Unidos con 423 artículos (16.7%) y 7,458 citas (12.6%). La red de coautoría identificó a 10,756 autores. Según el análisis multivariado, tanto los casos confirmados como las defunciones se correlacionaron significativamente con el número de publicaciones por país (corregido por el tamaño de la población y el producto interno bruto). Conclusión: La correlación sugiere que los casos y muertes tuvieron un impacto en la literatura médica, esto refleja la prontitud con que la comunidad científica ha estado en el frente de batalla contra COVID-19.
To assess scientific production related to ophthalmology and vision in Latin America during the period from 2006 to 2015.
The PubMed, Lilacs (Bireme), Google Scholar, SciELO, and Medigraphic ...databases were evaluated for this retrospective, descriptive, and comparative study.
A total of 1,510 articles was identified. Brazil was the leader in quantitative production in ophthalmology, averaging 85.4 articles per year. Mexico was in second place with 27.4, and Argentina was in third place with 11.1 articles per year. Forty-one percent of articles were published in English, 28.1% dealt with the subspecialty of the retina, and 63% were published by researchers affiliated with universities. The frequency of male first authors was 58.9%, and the journal Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia accounted for 36.42% of the identified articles.
Brazil stands in first place in Latin America in ophthalmologic scientific production. Nearly half of the researchers in ophthalmology in Latin America included in our study were listed in databases other than PubMed.
The COVID‐19 pandemic has resulted in the rapid implementation of telehealth. However, little is known about its suitability for the older population. We evaluated the use of telehealth in geriatric ...outpatient clinics. Half of the appointments needed to be re‐scheduled due to language barrier, poor connection, hard of hearing and inability to perform assessments. Advantages included time efficiency and ability to visualise the home. Preference for the future was initial appointments as face–face, but reviews as either telehealth or face–face.
