The present research attempts to understand the importance of altruistic and egoistic values in determining consumers' motives and intention to purchase organic foods. Using the face-to-face survey ...approach, a total of 1,067 responses were collected from consumers in China. Data analysis was performed using a two-step structural equation modeling (SEM) approach, i.e., measurement and structural models. The findings indicated that both values influence the intention to purchase organic foods through the mediation of motives. Specifically, the altruistic value influences the environmental concern (EC), and the egoistic value influences the health concern (HC). Moreover, the perceived uncertainty negatively moderates a relationship between consumer HC and organic purchase intention while positively moderating a relationship between consumer EC and organic purchase intention. Several implications and suggestions are also discussed.
Curcumin is known to exhibit anticancer effects on various cancers with selective cytotoxicity in tumor cells. In the present study, the effects of curcumin‑induced multiple PCDs on human non‑small ...cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells and the potential molecular mechanisms of apoptosis and autophagy triggered by curcumin via the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway were explored, further confirmed by co‑culture of curcumin with mTOR blocker rapamycin and PI3K/Akt inhibitor LY294002. The anti‑proliferation effect of different stimulus was measured by MTT assay. Apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Autophagy induction was detected by MDC labeling and western blotting of Beclin1, LC3, and p62 expression. The mRNA and protein expression levels of Akt and mTOR were assayed by real‑time fluorescence quantitative (qRT‑PCR) technique and western blotting. Our results showed that curcumin inhibited the viability of A549 cells time‑ and dose‑dependently. In addition, a dosage-dependent A549 cell apoptosis‑induction phenomena was observed by the curcumin intervention. Moreover, obvious autophagy was induced after curcumin‑treatment, characterized by the formation of fluorescent particles autophagic vesicles (AVs) and significant increase in ratio of LC3‑Ⅱ/LC3‑Ⅰ and Beclin1 as well as decreased p62 expression. Furthermore, the effect of curcumin on a substantial downregulation of phosphatidylinositol 3‑kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway was observed. It is worth noting that the inhibition of mTOR by rapamycin or of PI3K/Akt by LY294002 augmented curcumin‑induced apoptosis and autophagy, leading to significant inhibition of cell proliferation. From these findings, it can be speculated that curcumin potently inhibit the cell growth of NSCLC A549 cells through inducing both apoptosis and autophagy by inhibition of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway. These results support the potential use of curcumin as a novel candidate in treatment of human lung cancer.
Strain sensors that can rapidly and efficiently detect strain distribution and magnitude are crucial for structural health monitoring and human–computer interactions. However, traditional electrical ...and optical strain sensors make access to structural health information challenging because data conversion is required, and they have intricate, delicate designs. Drawing inspiration from the moisture-responsive coloration of beetle wing sheaths, we propose using Ecoflex as a flexible substrate. This substrate is coated with a Fabry–Perot (F–P) optical structure, comprising a “reflective layer/stretchable interference cavity/reflective layer”, creating a dynamic color-changing visual strain sensor. Upon the application of external stress, the flexible interference chamber of the sensor stretches and contracts, prompting a blue-shift in the structural reflection curve and displaying varying colors that correlate with the applied strain. The innovative flexible sensor can be attached to complex-shaped components, enabling the visual detection of structural integrity. This biomimetic visual strain sensor holds significant promise for real-time structural health monitoring applications.
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to assess the associations of maternal iron status and placental iron transport proteins expression with the risk of pre-eclampsia (PE) in Chinese pregnant ...women.
Methods and Study Design: A total of 94 subjects with PE and 112 healthy pregnant women were enrolled. Fasting blood samples were collected to detect maternal iron status. The placenta samples were collected at delivery to detect the mRNA and protein expression of divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) and ferroportin-1 (FPN1). Logistic analysis was used to explore the associations of maternal iron status with PE risk. The associations of placental iron transport proteins with maternal iron status were explored.
Results: After adjusting for covariates, dietary total iron, non-heme iron intake and serum hepcidin were negatively associated with PE, with adjusted ORs (95%CIs) were 0.40 (0.17, 0.91), 0.42 (0.18, 0.94) and 0.02 (0.002, 0.13) for the highest versus lowest tertile, respectively. For the highest tertile versus lowest tertile, serum iron (4.08 (1.58, 10.57)) and ferritin (5.61 (2.36, 13.31)) were positively associated with PE. The mRNA expressions and protein levels of DMT1 and FPN1 in placenta were up-regulated in the PE group (p < 0.05). The mRNA expressions of DMT1 and FPN1 in placenta showed a negative correlation with the serum hepcidin (r equivalent -0.71, p < 0.001; r equivalent -0.49, p < 0.05).
Conclusions: In conclusion, the maternal iron status were closely associated with PE risk, placental DMT1 and FPN1 were upregulated in PE which May be a promising target for the prevention of PE.
Van der Waals (vdW) layered GeTe-Sb2Te3 superlattices (GST-SL) have attracted enormous attentions due to the ultralow power consumption for nonvolatile phase change memory. In this paper, effects of ...biaxial strain on interfacial intermixing and local structures in strain engineered GST-SL were studied. Highly (0 0 l) textured GST-SL with thickness-varied Sb2Te3 sublayers were fabricated by magnetron sputtering and investigated with multiple analyses on surfaces and interfaces. The appearance of Ge-Sb-Te alloys indicated the interfacial Ge/Sb intermixing in strain engineered GST-SL, which actually were composed of Sb2Te3 quintuple layers, Ge-Sb-Te vdW layers and isolated GeTe bilayers. Grazing incidence x-ray diffraction (GID) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results revealed that biaxial strain not only facilitated the interfacial intermixing, but also caused the reconfiguration of Ge-Sb-Te vdW layers. Raman spectra indicated that vertical and in-plane vibrations of GeTe layers were not affected by the interfacial intermixing and the newly-formed Ge-Sb-Te layers had similar vibration characteristics as that of GeTe layers. A modified switching mechanism of GST-SL, relating to both the amorphous-crystalline phase transition of GeTe and Ge-Sb-Te layers incorporated into the Sb2Te3 matrix, was then presented. The present studies shed new light on strain engineering for GST-SL and indicate their potential optoelectronic applications.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. Although previous studies have described the clinical aspects of COVID-19, few studies have focused on the ...early detection of severe COVID-19. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the predictors of severe COVID-19 and to compare clinical features between patients with severe COVID-19 and those with less severe COVID-19. Patients admitted to designated hospital in the Henan Province of China who were either discharged or died prior to February 15, 2020 were enrolled retrospectively. Additionally, patients who underwent at least one of the following treatments were assigned to the severe group: continuous renal replacement therapy, high-flow oxygen absorption, noninvasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The remaining patients were assigned to the non-severe group. Demographic information, initial symptoms, and first visit examination results were collected from the electronic medical records and compared between the groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the predictors of severe COVID-19. A receiver operating characteristic curve was used to identify a threshold for each predictor. Altogether,104 patients were enrolled in our study with 30 and 74 patients in the severe and non-severe groups, respectively. Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that patients aged ≥63 years (odds ratio = 41.0; 95% CI: 2.8, 592.4), with an absolute lymphocyte value of ≤1.02×109/L (odds ratio = 6.1; 95% CI = 1.5, 25.2) and a C-reactive protein level of ≥65.08mg/L (odds ratio = 8.9; 95% CI = 1.0, 74.2) were at a higher risk of severe illness. Thus, our results could be helpful in the early detection of patients at risk for severe illness, enabling the implementation of effective interventions and likely lowering the morbidity of COVID-19 patients.
