The main scientific discoveries on Aloe vera published mainly in the last three decades are presented in this work. After describing Aloe from a botanical point of view, the papers related with the ...chemical composition of different parts of the leaf of Aloe, particularly those in which the gel is described and are presented in a synthetic manner. The chemical analyses reveal that Aloe gel contains mannose polymers with some glucose and other sugars, among which the most important is Acemannan. Besides these, other components such as glycoproteins, enzymes, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals are described. Different factors also affecting the chemical composition of the gel, such as species and variety, climatic and soil conditions, cultivation methods, processing and preservation, are enumerated and discussed. On the other hand, the main therapeutic applications have been revised and the possible damaging effects of Aloe are also commented upon. A special emphasis is placed on the biologically active compounds or groups of compounds responsible for the therapeutic applications and which are their action mechanisms. The paper concludes that more research is needed to confirm the therapeutic and beneficial effects and to definitively clarify the myth surrounding Aloe vera. A general view on the problem of the commercialization and establishment of the quality and safety of Aloe products in the food industry has been offered here. The main points and European regulations that need to be considered regarding the quality control of prepared Aloe products are presented in this paper.
How did the hierarchy of the world-system adapt to the impact of the 2008–09 global economic crisis? How did a country's position in the world-system influence their upward mobility during the ...crisis? This paper investigates the core/periphery hierarchy of the global trade network before and after the 2008–09 crisis. The central argument posits that the global trade network follows a core/periphery hierarchy in relation to the new international division of labor (NIDL) in the twenty-first century, and a country's placement within that hierarchy had a varying effect on their upward mobility following the 2008–09 crisis. Utilizing social network analysis of 191 countries engaged in global trade, I discover that the core/periphery structure remained unchanged after the 2008–09 global financial crisis, although many countries in intermediate positions experienced upward shifts. However, not all countries were able to achieve upward mobility, indicating that only a few semi-peripheral and peripheral countries were better positioned to improve their status compared to most non-core countries.

Copigmentation and enological parameters were studied in a collection of 250 red wines. Although several copigmentation studies have been performed with model solutions, little is known about the ...actual consequences directly in wine of anthocyanin interactions. To date, some studies have considered relationships between copigmentation and natural wine constituents, but none correlates copigmentation measurements with the real wide concentration in wine. In this work, published hypotheses based on model solutions such as phenolic acid copigmentation ability or the influence of copigmentation factors such as flavonols are empirically evaluated in a large sample of wines for the first time. The study confirms previous results obtained from solutions, whereas other factors suggested as being relevant seem to be unrelated to the studied effect at the concentration range naturally occurring in the wines studied. For instance, the important role of flavonols and hydroxycinnamic acids has been ratified, whereas ethanol, gallic acid, and some metals show significant inverse correlations with copigmentation. Unexpectedly, magnesium content in wine correlates with color, whereas the concentration of traditional copigments, such as quercetin, does not show any correlation with copigmentation.

A clinical expert system has been developed for detection of Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The system extracts features from voice recordings and considers an advanced statistical approach for pattern recognition. The significance of the work lies on the development and use of a novel subject-based Bayesian approach to account for the dependent nature of the data in a replicated measure-based design. The ideas under this approach are conceptually simple and easy-to-implement by using Gibbs sampling. Available information could be included in the model through the prior distribution. In order to assess the performance of the proposed system, a voice recording replication-based experiment has been specifically conducted to discriminate healthy people from people suffering PD. The experiment involved 80 subjects, half of them affected by PD. The proposed system is able to discriminate acceptably well healthy people from people with PD in spite that the experiment has a reduced number of subjects.

Physicochemical characteristics (weight, length, width, thickness, moisture, Brix degree, total fiber, protein, ash, pH, acidity, ascorbic acid, total phenolic compounds, P, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Cr) were determined in cactus pads from Opuntia dillenii and Opuntia ficus indica. The physicochemical characteristics of both species were clearly different. There were important differences between the orange and green fruit pulp of O. ficus indica; the cactus pads of O. dillenii could be differentiated according to the region (North and South). Consumption of cactus pads contributes to the intake of dietary fiber, total phenolic compounds, K, Mg, Mn and Cr. Applying factor and/or discriminant analysis, the cactus pad samples were clearly differentiated according to the species, the fruit pulp color and production region.
In the parameter estimation of limit extreme value distributions, most employed methods only use some of the available data. Using the peaks-over-threshold method for Generalized Pareto Distribution ...(GPD), only the observations above a certain threshold are considered; therefore, a big amount of information is wasted. The aim of this work is to make the most of the information provided by the observations in order to improve the accuracy of Bayesian parameter estimation. We present two new Bayesian methods to estimate the parameters of the GPD, taking into account the whole data set from the baseline distribution and the existing relations between the baseline and the limit GPD parameters in order to define highly informative priors. We make a comparison between the Bayesian Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with data over the threshold and the new methods when the baseline distribution is a stable distribution, whose properties assure we can reduce the problem to study standard distributions and also allow us to propose new estimators for the parameters of the tail distribution. Specifically, three cases of stable distributions were considered: Normal, Lévy and Cauchy distributions, as main examples of the different behaviors of the tails of a distribution. Nevertheless, the methods would be applicable to many other baseline distributions through finding relations between baseline and GPD parameters via studies of simulations. To illustrate this situation, we study the application of the methods with real data of air pollution in Badajoz (Spain), whose baseline distribution fits a Gamma, and show that the baseline methods improve estimates compared to the Bayesian Metropolis-Hastings algorithm.

Concentrations of Na, K, Rb, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn and Mn were determined in eight cultivars of potatoes harvested in Tenerife. The traditional cultivars presented higher K, Fe, Cu and Zn concentrations ...and lower ratio Na/K than recently imported cultivars. The cultivar Cara showed the highest and lowest mean concentration for Na and K, respectively. The highest mean concentrations of Fe, Cu and Zn were found in the cultivars Azucena, Palmera and Peluca, and the lowest concentrations in Cara. The trace elements significantly correlated with all the metals. The behaviour of Na was opposite to the rest of the metals, showing negative correlations. Applying factor analysis, the first three factors explaining 70.4% of the total variance were extracted. The first factor is related to Zn, the second factor is associated with Mn and K, and the third factor is negatively related to Na. Factor analysis and cluster analysis tend to separate the potato samples according to location and irrigation procedure. Traditional and recently imported potatoes were well separated when the factor analysis was applied on the samples of
Solanum tuberosum.
Tracking Parkinson’s disease symptom severity by using characteristics automatically extracted from voice recordings is a very interesting and challenging problem. In this context, voice features are ...automatically extracted from multiple voice recordings from the same subjects. In principle, for each subject, the features should be identical at a concrete time, but the imperfections in technology and the own biological variability result in nonidentical replicated features. The involved within-subject variability must be addressed since replicated measurements from voice recordings can not be directly used in independence-based pattern recognition methods as they have been routinely used through the scientific literature. Besides, the time plays a key role in the experimental design. In this paper, for the first time, a Bayesian linear regression approach suitable to handle replicated measurements and time is proposed. Moreover, a version favoring the best predictors and penalizing the worst ones is also presented. Computational difficulties have been avoided by developing Gibbs sampling-based approaches.
