Arid to semi-arid regions are characterized by low levels of surface water and low annual precipitation (generally <350 mm/year). In such areas, groundwater must be used to meet all the needs of the ...population for water. As a consequence, careful management is required to ensure the sustainability of this scarce resource in response to the demands of urban centers, industry, agriculture, and tourism. The concept of the aquifer recharge rate is particularly useful in the quantification of these groundwater resources and can be used to form the basis of a decision support system. This study determined the potential recharge rate in the Haouz aquifer using a multi-criteria analysis that included both the major and minor factors influencing the rate of infiltration of water into the aquifer. The analysis was based on the use of a geographical information system supported by remote sensing techniques to develop thematic data layers. These layers were then used to describe the spatial variation of the factors influencing the recharge rate of the aquifer and were subsequently integrated and analyzed to derive the spatial distribution of the potential recharge. This approach was used to classify the Haouz Plain (Morocco) into three different zones with respect to the recharge rate, with recharge rates ranging from 3.5 to 18.2 %.
In order to satisfy the exceptional conditions imposed by the offshore structures, a particular attention should be paid to the stability of shallow foundations resting on purely cohesive soil. One ...important specification of the offshore foundations is their soil-footing interface which can sustain tension. This paper studies the effect of the tensile strength of this interface on the undrained bearing capacity of a strip footing and assesses the reliability of the effective width method under eccentric loading. This is done by a numerical modelling using the finite difference method. Failure envelopes, failure mechanisms and normal stress distribution at the interface are presented and compared with available results from literature. The results show that the effective width method is not reliable in the presence of the tensile strength at the interface. This strength yields supplementary stability and keeps the footing in contact with the soil even under low vertical loading.
The objective of this paper is to develop an analytical equation based on the concept of the critical-length of columns in order to optimize the ultimate bearing-capacity of soft soils, supporting a ...strip footing and reinforced by a group of floating stone columns. Optimization procedure was performed on three-dimensional numerical models simulated on the Flac3D computer code, for various soft-soils with different undrained-cohesions (Cu=15–35kPa), reinforced by columns of varying lengths (L) and area replacement ratio (As=10-40%), considering different footing widths B. Obtained results indicate that the optimal bearing-capacity ratio (Ultimate bearing-capacity of reinforced soil/unreinforced soil) is reached for the column critical-length ratio (Lc/B) and increase with increase of the later ratio, depending on As and Cu. Analysis of results also showed that the optimal values of the bearing-capacity ratio in the reinforced soils remain bounded between the lower and higher values (1.28-2.32), respectively for minimal and maximal values of the critical-length ratio (1.1) and (4.4). Based on these results, a useful analytical equation is proposed by the authors, for the expression of the critical-length; thus ensuring an optimal pre-dimensioning of the stone columns. Located in the extreme northwest of Africa, the Kingdom of Morocco is increasingly affected by drought. Much of the country is characterised by an arid to semi-arid climate and the demand for water ...is considerably higher than the supply, particularly on the Haouz Plain in the centre of the country. The expansion of agriculture and tourism, in addition to industrial development and mining, have exacerbated the stress on water supplies resulting in drought. It is therefore necessary to adopt careful management practices to preserve the sustainability of the water resources in this region. The aquifer recharge rate in the piedmont region that links the High Atlas and the Central Haouz Plain was estimated using the chloride mass balance hydrochemical method, which is based on the relationship between the chloride concentrations in groundwater and rainwater. The addition of a geographical information system made it possible to estimate the recharge rate over the whole 400 km

of the study area. The results are presented in the form of a map showing the spatialized recharge rate, which ranges from 13 to 100 mm/year and the recharge percentage of the total rainfall varies from 3 to 25 % for the hydrological year 2011–2012. This approach will enable the validation of empirical models covering areas >6200 km

Cette étude a pour objet de déterminer l’évolution des propriétés géotechniques d’un sol schisteux du pôle universitaire d’El-Aouana dans la wilaya de Jijel (Algérie). L’échantillon prélevé sur site a été modifié avec des proportions d’additifs avec 0, 1 %, 3 % et 7 % du remplacement du ciment et de la chaux en poids sec afin de tester les différents proprietées de la patte fraiche du sol argileux.On conclut que l’addition d’un liant (Ciment ou chaux) au sol schisteux provoque une réduction de la plasticité, une amélioration des caractéristiques de compactage au Proctor, une augmentation rapide de l’indice de portance immédiat en fonction du traitement et une augmentation de la cohésion et de l’angle de frottement.
