A 72-year-old female was admitted with dyspnea. Bronchoscopy revealed a tumor obstructing approximately 80% of the tracheal lumen, 3.0cm above the carina. The tumor was removed by circumferential ...resection of the trachea. The histology was benign mixed tumor, salivary gland type, arising from the tracheal wall. We reported the case of the tracheal benign mixed tumor and reviewed the Japanese literature.
Sharks gained public attention throughout Japan when a commercial diver collecting fan shells was attacked by a white shark in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan in March of 1992. Soon after the accident, a ...shark reporting network was established by related fisheries organizations. Through the network any information on sharks in the Seto Inland Sea was collected by Seto Inland Sea Fisheries Coordination Center, Fisheries Agency of Japan and released immediately to the public. Information on species, length, and location caught or seen has been accumulated. From 1992 to 1998, 68 individual sharks (13 species in nine genera in seven families) were identified. Among them were requiem sharks, Carcharhinus species, bonnethead sharks, Sphyrna species and white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias which occurred relatively abundantly. Correlations were not recognized between the occurrence of sharks encountered and the catch of small pelagic fish thought to be their prey and the seasonal change in surface temperatures.
Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA), the surface compositions of the nickel substrates and the cathode films formed in chromic acid solutions were examined as functions of the cathode ...potential. In the potential range more positive than -0.75Vvs.SCE, where cathodic etching of substrate metal takes place, nickel oxide films formed on the substrate were reduced to metallic nickel and the cathode films consisted of a trivalent chromium compound containing bound water. In the range more negative than -0.75V, the substrate was covered with oxidized nickel and the cathode film was analysed to be a trivalent chromium compound equivalent to CrO(OH)H2O. Further, the hexavalent chromium compound was found on top of the cathode films. At the potential where chromium metal deposits, the oxidized nickel layer was again reduced to metallic nickel. Thus, it is likely that the changes in the surface composition of the nickel substrate play an important role in chromiumdeposition.
RU 28965, a new macrolide antibiotic, was basically and clinically evaluated with the following results. 1. Antimicrobial activity: the minimum Inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of RU 28965 against a ...total 134 strains consisting of 12 standard strains and 122 clinical isolates (6 species) were compared with those of erythromycin (EM) and cefaclor (CCL). RU 28965's antibacterial activity was equally or half as potent as that of EM against S.aureus, S.pneumoniae, B.catarrhalis and 1/2 or 1/4 as potent against H. influenzae. On the other hand, both antibiotics were poor against K.pneumoniae and P.aensginosa. 2. Clinical efficacy: RU 28965 was administered at a dailydose of 300mg for 3-14 days to 15 patients with various respiratory infections. Clinical response was good 9, fair 2, poor 2 and not assessable 1; one dropped out. The overall efficacy rate was 69.2%(9/13 cases). Subjective and objective symptoms, hematological and biochemical data and renal functions were checked before and after administration of RU 28965. Three patients showed adverse reactions: diarrhea, eosinophilia, and minimal elevation of both S-GOT and S-GPT in 1 each. We therefore conclude that RU 28965 is a useful antibiotic in treating patients with respiratory infections.
