This editorial provides an overview of ten scientific articles published as
the Special paper selection in Thermal Science. The papers were selected
from almost six hundred contributions, presented ...at the 16th Conference on
Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES
2021), held on October 10-15, 2021 in Dubrovnik, Croatia. The topics covered
in the Special paper selection include economics of electricity markets,
nuclear technology, repowering of the coal-based power plant, hybrid
renewable energy system, sustainable biomass handling and conversion,
post-combustion emissions control, and efficient cooling technology. The
editorial also emphasised the papers recently published in the Special
Issues of leading scientific journals dedicated to the series of SDEWES
Conferences.
Unexpectedly, after a surgical intervention, in February 2019, passed away Vladimir N. Živković, our friend and Technical Editor. Vladimir N. Živković was the Technical Editor of the journal Thermal ...Science from the very beginning - from the date of foundation and its 1st issue published in 1994. Having a long experience in publishing business, he formulated the style, and appearance of the Journal, wrote first documents and rules for authors and educated us, scientific editors, about secrets of publishing, possible difficulties, and most often errors. During his long professional engagement in publishing business, Vladimir N. Živković was from 1964 up to 1974 Technical Editor of the journal Nuclear Energy, which was founded and published by Yugoslav Federal Nuclear Energy Commission, and from 1976 up to 1978 Technical Editor of the journal Science and Society, published by Yugoslav Society for Science and Society. Vladimir N. Živković affiliated himself with the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Science in 1978 in Publishing Department and in 1983 was appointed the director of Publishing Department. Vladimir N. Živković liked his profession. For journal Thermal Science he organized a chain of technical processes from original manuscripts of the revised papers, up to printing the journal in necessary number of copies. His final control of the computer layouts of papers published in journal Thermal Science was detailed and strict, by reading manuscripts line by line. Not a single error made by an author or computer operator could ever pass undetected by his attentive gaze. Due to unprecedented attention and efforts of Vladimir N. Živković during a period of nearly 25 years to improve technical and esthetical quality of the journal Thermal Science, our journal achieved technical level of the world's most reputed international scientific journals.
The paper presents an overview of the results of the investigations of the processes that take place in pulverized coal combustion boilers and power plants which, in a longer period of time, were ...realized in the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy of the "Vinca" Institute of Nuclear Sciences. The presented results were published in numerous studies realized for different users, Ph. D., M. Sc., and specialist thesis, in international and domestic scientific journals and monographs, presented at numerous international and domestic scientific meetings, etc. The main goal of the paper is to chronologically present the results of domestic research that at one time were at an enviable international level, with concrete practical applications for domestic users. This is especially important to contrast the present situation when domestic research in this area is scarce and when the energy sector relies practically only on imported technologies and foreign consultancy. Project of the Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Grant no. III42011, Grant no. III42010, Grant no. TR33018 and Grant no. TR33042

Paper gives a review of the most important results of turbulence research achieved by the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy. Paper presents detailed overview of the history of the ...scientific research provided in the laboratory, from the beginning in the mid-60s to today, pointing out the main reasons initiating the investigations in this field. After the first period, which was mainly devoted to the research of the structure of the turbulence, since the beginning of the 80s, research is mainly oriented to the flows at high temperatures including chemical reactions and to the development and improvement of differential mathematical models as a modern and very efficient tool in the technological development. This research significantly contributed to the development of pulverized coal burners, plasma-chemical reactors, and optimization of pulverized coal fired boilers operating parameters and prediction of the greenhouse gases emissions. Most recent period includes experimental and numerical studies of the coherent structures in turbulent fluid jets, mathematical modeling of various turbulent thermal flow processes including two-phase turbulent flow in the multiphase heat exchangers and mathematical modeling of the atmospheric boundary layer.
Paper gives a review of the most important results of extensive and wide-ranging research program on R&D of fluidized bed combustion technology in the Laboratory for Thermal Engineering and Energy of ...the VINCA Institute of Nuclear Sciences. Paper presents detailed overview of R&D activities from the beginning in the second half of the 1970's up to present days. These activities encompass applied research achievements in the field of characterization of limestones and bed agglomeration and sintering and modeling of overall processes during fluidized bed combustion, all of which have facilitated the R&D of the fluidized bed combustion technology. Attention is also given to steady-state combustion testing of a wide-range of fuels (coals, liquid fuels, biomass, waste solid and liquid materials, etc.) in our fluidized bed combustor and development of original methodology for testing the suitability of fuels for fluidized bed combustion, as well as specific achievements in the area of technology application in Serbia.
Paper presents short review of research problems, applied methods for solving
problems and main results obtained by the researchers in Laboratory for
Thermal Engineering and Energy (LTE) of the ..."Vinca" Institute of Nuclear
Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia dealing with pulverized coal combustion processes
and technologies for reduction of pollutions problems at thermal power
plants in a period since 2000. The presented results were published in
numerous studies realized for different users, Ph. D., Masters, and
Specialist thesis, in international and domestic scientific journals and
monographs, presented at numerous international and domestic scientific
conferences, etc. Presented research projects and results of applied
research projects realized at pulverized coal combustion thermal power
plants clearly show that LTE team was involved in key activities of
rehabilitation and modernization, including implementation of best
available technologies for pollution reduction at thermal power plants, in
the region of South East Europe.
