Objectives
To assess relevant data comparing short implants or implants associated with vertical ridge augmentation derived from RCT's and CCT's.
Material and methods
A PubMed and hand search was ...performed to identify all RCT's and CCT's published in English language comparing short implants to implants associated with vertical ridge augmentation.
Results
The initial search resulted in 3387 articles. A total of 17 articles were eligible for full‐text analysis and four were finally included. This review tends to demonstrate similar implant survival rates between implants placed in vertically augmented bone and short implants (95.09% vs. 96.24%, respectively) with a follow‐up ranging from 1 to 5 years. In terms of prosthetic survival rates, there were no differences between the treatments. More surgical complications were reported when using implants placed in vertically augmented bone compared to short implants (56 patients with surgical complications compared to 18 patients, respectively).
Conclusions
This evidence should, however, be interpreted with caution as it is derived from four RCT's with limited sample size (ranging from 15 to 30 per group), limited follow‐up and performed by the same research group.
Electric light sources, including displays and luminaires, often exhibit rapid light fluctuations called temporal light modulation (TLM). TLM can be seen as their electrical footprint. This work ...demonstrates that TLM can be remotely detected and used to perform in situ photometric and spectroradiometric measurements of very low light levels superimposed to intense backgrounds. Illuminance levels about 500 000 times smaller than the background were reliably measured by lock-in detection, allowing photometric measurements to be performed during daytime, even with sunny conditions. Using a new type of optical lock-in spectrometer, it becomes possible to retrieve spectral quantities through the TLM of the light source. The spectral distribution of an LED lamp was measured against a daylit background more than 1500 times brighter. Lock-in detection is an excellent technique to perform in situ measurements of electric light, even at very low level, in the presence of daylight and other background lights, opening interesting opportunities to characterize anthropogenic light pollution.
Conventional allograft therapy for corneal scarring is widespread and successful, but donor tissue is not universally available, and some grafts fail owing to rejection and complications such as ...endothelial failure. We investigated direct treatment of corneal scarring using autologous stem cells, a therapy that, if successful, could reduce the need for corneal grafts. Mesenchymal cells were expanded from small superficial, clinically replicable limbal biopsies of human cadaveric corneo-scleral rims. Limbal biopsy-derived stromal cells (LBSCs) expanded rapidly in media containing human serum, were highly clonogenic, and could generate spheres expressing stem cell genes (ABCG2, Nestin, NGFR, Oct4, PAX6, and Sox2). Human LBSCs differentiated into keratocytes expressing characteristic marker genes (ALDH3A1, AQP1, KERA, and PTGDS) and organized a thick lamellar stroma-like tissue containing aligned collagen and keratan sulfate proteoglycans when cultured on aligned nanofiber substrata. When engrafted into mouse corneal wounds, LBSCs prevented formation of light-scattering scar tissue containing fibrotic matrix components. The presence of LBSCs induced regeneration of ablated stroma with tissue exhibiting lamellar structure and collagen organization indistinguishable from that of native tissue. Because the limbus can be easily biopsied from either eye of an affected individual and LBSCs capable of corneal stromal remodeling can be expanded under xeno-free autologous conditions, these cells present a potential for autologous stem cell-based treatment of corneal stromal blindness.

Due to restriction of the use of BPA, several structural analogues such as BPS and BPF have been proposed for its replacement in many consumer products. This has increased the prevalence of BPS and BPF in urine from tested cohorts. However, these substitutes have similar endocrine disrupting properties to BPA, particularly on reproductive and metabolic functions, which suggests that fetal exposure to these analogues could be of concern for human health. Bisphenols (BPs) are mainly metabolized to glucuronides (BP-Gs), which are considered as inactive but provide a relevant marker of fetal exposure during pregnancy. In most instances, these metabolites are indirectly quantified after hydrolysis and measurement of the corresponding native BPs, which may lead to bias due to spurious BPs contamination during blood collection and/or analyses. We have developed a new method for direct quantification of BP-Gs, which has the advantage of not being affected by errors related to the presence of BPs. First, BP-Gs were extracted from plasma by anion exchange solid phase extraction. They were then labelled with dansyl chloride, using experimentally-optimized incubation conditions, after which the dansyl derivatives were injected into an on-line SPE-UHPLC/MS/MS system. The performance of the method, in terms of sensitivity, precision and accuracy, was evaluated in plasma over a concentration range of 0.05–5 ng/mL. The intra- and inter-day CV% precision were lower than 20% with accuracies ranging from 93% to 115%. The limit of quantification was set at 0.05 ng/mL. The method was then applied to measure BP-Gs in forty-four cord plasma samples. Although no BPF-G was found, BPA-G and BPS-G was determined in almost half of the cord plasma samples with concentration ranges nd-0.089 ng/mL and nd-0.586 ng/mL, respectively.
The objective of the present study was to quantify the relationships between prepartum nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations and the development of subsequent diseases or culling and to ...identify the optimal thresholds allowing identification of animals at high risk of developing postpartum diseases or being culled. A total of 1,299 Holstein cows from 50 commercial herds located around Saint-Hyacinthe (QC, Canada) were enrolled in this observational study. Blood samples were collected from enrolled cows between 1 and 14 d before calving for serum NEFA quantification. Data concerning postpartum diseases and culling were collected from computerized record systems. The association between prepartum NEFA concentrations and postpartum diseases and culling was quantified using generalized linear mixed models, accounting for parity, season, week of sampling, and herd. Optimal NEFA thresholds were evaluated with receiver operator characteristic curves analysis for all diseases and then confirmed with generalized linear mixed models, considering NEFA as a categorical variable (high or low). Prepartum serum NEFA concentrations were associated with diseases diagnosed during the first 30 d in milk (DIM) and culling within the first 50 DIM. The optimal NEFA threshold associated with diseases was ≥290 µmol/L for retained placenta, ≥300 µmol/L for metritis and abomasal displacement, and ≥280 µmol/L for clinical mastitis and hyperketonemia. The level associated with the occurrence of at least one of these diseases in the first 30 DIM was ≥280 µmol/L, but it was ≥260 µmol/L for culling in the first 50 DIM. No relationship was found between NEFA concentrations and reproductive tract diseases (purulent vaginal discharge or cytological endometritis) or subclinical intramammary infection. Despite the strong relationship between prepartum NEFA concentrations and many diseases, the NEFA optimal threshold accuracy found in our study was low. In conclusion, our results demonstrate a relationship between NEFA concentrations in the 14-d period before calving and the subsequent development of diseases and culling. Prepartum NEFA concentrations thresholds between ≥260 and 300 µmol/L appear to be a strategic choice. However, considering the low accuracy, their use at the cow level should be performed with caution.

In recent years, several publications have demonstrated the interest and the usefulness of pharmacogenetics in forensic toxicology. However, this approach remains namely focused on DNA-based phenotype, which may potentially lead to misinterpretation. Other determinants such as co-medication or physiological parameters may also impact the phenotype. This article aims to highlight the importance of considering such determinants in forensic toxicology, through the original case of a heroin-related fatality.
Ethanol concentration determination and toxicological screening were performed using gas chromatography with flame ionization detection, liquid chromatography with diode array detection and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection. CYP2C19 and CYP2D6 genotypes were determined by Taqman® real-time PCR analyses.
Femoral blood analyses revealed the presence of ethanol, morphine, codeine, venlafaxine (VEN), O-desmethylvenlafaxine (ODV) and N-desmethylvenlafaxine (NDV), paroxetine, and risperidone. 6-acetylmorphine was also identified in urine. VEN, paroxetine and risperidone were quantified at supra-therapeutic or toxic blood concentrations. NDV was not quantified. The metabolic ratio of VEN (ODV to VEN) was exceptionally low (about 0.7). Pharmacogenetics testing showed that the patient was heterozygous for the CYP2C19*2 loss-of-function allele, which predict an intermediate metabolism for CYP2C19. None of the deficient CYP2D6 alleles investigated were identified. Those results suggest an extensive CYP2D6-metabolism phenotype.
A discrepancy was seen between the results of the genomic evaluation and the observed metabolic ratio of VEN. This tends to exclude a genetic origin and lead us to formulate other hypotheses, such as phenoconversion that may have been induced by drug interaction involving patients’ regular medications. Phenoconversion is as a complex phenomenon that leads to genotype-phenotype mismatch without any genetic abnormality particularly described for cytochromes P450 2D6 and 2C19. Although transient, phenoconversion can have a significant impact on the analysis and interpretation of genotype-focused clinical outcomes correlation and in forensic toxicology conclusions.
A major challenge in regenerating periodontal tissues is emulating its complex structure containing both mineralized and soft tissues. In this study, scaffold-free tissue constructs engineered using ...periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs), which contain a population of adult stem/progenitor cells, self-assembled into an organized multi-tissue structure comprising a mineralized cementum-like core enclosed within a periodontal ligament (PDL)-like tissue. Scaffold-free engineered constructs were formed by culturing human PDLCs to form a cell sheet on six-well dishes containing two minutien pins placed 7 mm apart. The cell sheet was contracted by the cells to roll into the pins forming a cylindrical construct anchored on either end by the pins. These tissues were approximately 1 mm in diameter and 7 mm long and contained only the cells and their endogenous matrix. These scaffold-free engineered constructs exhibited two structurally distinct tissues, one in the center of the construct and another on the periphery. The center tissue was mineralized and expressed alkaline phosphatase and bone sialoprotein, similar to cementum. The peripheral tissue was not calcified and expressed periodontal ligament-associated protein-1 and periostin, which is characteristic of the periodontal ligament. culture and maintained
following subcutaneous implantation in immunocompromised mice. These data demonstrate that scaffold-free tissue engineering facilitates PDLCs to self-assemble into an organized cementum-PDL-like complex. These engineered tissues could be used as implantable grafts to regenerate damaged periodontal tissues or as model systems to study PDLC biology and mechanisms driving organized tissue assembly within the periodontium.
GlobAllomeTree is an international platform for tree allometric equations. It is the first worldwide web platform designed to facilitate the access of the tree allometric equation and to facilitate ...the assessment of the tree biometric characteristics for commercial volume, bio-energy or carbon cycling. The webplatform presents a database containing tree allometric equations, a software called Fantallomatrik, to facilitate the comparison and selection of the equations, and documentation to facilitate the development of new tree allometric models, improve the evaluation of tree and forest resources and improve knowledge on tree allometric equations. In the Fantallometrik software, equations can be selected by country, ecological zones, input parameters, tree species, statistic parameters and outputs. The continuously updated database currently contains over 5000 tree allometric equations classified according to 73 fields. The software Fantallometrik can be also used to compare equations, insert new data and estimate the selected output variables using field inventory.
