A 20-year-old female patient presented with two masses located in the left liver. In this patient, a computed tomography(CT) scan revealed a hypodense mass and a second well-defined mass with a ...calcified nodule in the left hepatic lobe.No enhancements were apparent in or around the masses.A laparotomy was performed due to the patient’s symptoms, namely, the atypical CT findings and a risk of rupture of the subcapsular lesion. The operation revealed two masses in the left hepatic lobe and a left liver resection was subsequently performed. One of the masses involved segment Ⅲ and the other mass was located in segment Ⅳ.The histopathologic findings supported a diagnosis of collagenous nodule mixed simple cyst and hemangioma.A diagnosis of collagenous nodule mixed simple hepatic cyst is extremely rare and radiologically mimics a teratoma, hepatolithiasis, parasitic cyst, or hemangioma.Although hepatic hemangiomas are the most common benign tumors found in the liver, the present case showed atypical radiographic features.
BACKGROUNDSyringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) represents a rare, noncancerous adnexal tumor predominantly presenting at birth or in early childhood. CASE SUMMARYIn this study, a 35-day-old girl ...was admitted to Kunming Children's Hospital in October 2019 due to a lesion in the right frontotemporal region since birth. The surface of the lesion was bright red, granular, and papillary and easily bled upon touch, with about 1.5 cm × 4 cm in size. A subcutaneous mass was felt at the base of the lesion, with a size of about 3 cm × 5 cm. Dermatoscopy showed that the skin lesion was lobular and crumby. The lesion center was reddish or white, while the edges were white or yellowish band-like. There were polymorphic vascular structures and white radial streaks in the lesion, with some vascular clusters scattered. Pathological examination showed papilloma-like hyperplasia of the epidermis, with the epidermis partly sinking into the dermis to form several cystic depressions. Combining clinical and histopathological features, the child was diagnosed with SCAP. Follow-up is ongoing, and surgical resection will be performed. CONCLUSIONThis was a special clinical manifestation of SCAP, which complements the clinical manifestations of the disease and provides new insights for the diagnosis and differentiation of neonatal skin tumors.
AIM to determine the relationship between five A3 G gene single nucleotide polymorphisms and the incidence of hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). METHODS this ...association study was designed as a retrospective study, including 657 patients with chronic HBV infection(CHB) and 299 healthy controls. All subjects were ethnic Han Chinese. Chronic HBV-infected patients recruited between 2012 and 2015 at the First Hospital of Jilin University(Changchun) were further classified into HBV-related HCC patients(n = 287) and non-HCC patients(n = 370). Frequency matching by age and sex was performed for each group. Human genomic DNAwas extracted from whole blood. Gene polymorphisms were identified using a mass spectroscopic method.RESULTS there were no significant differences between the genotype and allele frequencies of the rs7291971, rs5757465 and rs5757463 A3 G gene polymorphisms, and risk of CHB and HBV-related HCC. the AG genotype and G allele for rs8177832 were significantly related to a decreased risk of CHB(OR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.47-0.96; OR = 0.69, 95%CI: 0.50-0.95, respectively) and HCC(OR = 0.53, 95%CI: 0.34-0.84; OR = 0.58, 95%CI: 0.39-0.87, respectively). A significant relationship was found between rs2011861 computed tomography, tt genotypes and increased risk of HCC(OR = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.02-2.80; OR = 1.82, 95%CI: 1.08-3.06, respectively). Haplotype analyses showed three protective and four risk haplotypes for HCC. Also, one protective haplotype was found against CHB.CONCLUSION this study indicates that the A3 G rs8177832 polymorphism is associated with a decreased risk of CHB infection and HCC, while the rs2011861 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of HCC.
ABSTRACT
Phosphate‐solubilizing microbes (PSMs) drive the biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus (P) and hold promise for sustainable agriculture. However, their global distribution, overall diversity ...and application potential remain unknown. Here, we present the first synthesis of their biogeography, diversity and utility, employing data from 399 papers published between 1981 and 2017, the results of a nationwide field survey in China consisting of 367 soil samples, and a genetic analysis of 12986 genome‐sequenced prokaryotic strains. We show that at continental to global scales, the population density of PSMs in environmental samples is correlated with total P rather than pH. Remarkably, positive relationships exist between the population density of soil PSMs and available P, nitrate‐nitrogen and dissolved organic carbon in soil, reflecting functional couplings between PSMs and microbes driving biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen and carbon. More than 2704 strains affiliated with at least nine archaeal, 88 fungal and 336 bacterial species were reported as PSMs. Only 2.59% of these strains have been tested for their efficiencies in improving crop growth or yield under field conditions, providing evidence that PSMs are more likely to exert positive effects on wheat growing in alkaline P‐deficient soils. Our systematic genetic analysis reveals five promising PSM genera deserving much more attention.
We developed an H5/H7 trivalent inactivated vaccine by using Re-11, Re-12, and H7-Re2 vaccine seed viruses, which were generated by reverse genetics and derived their HA genes from ...A/duck/Guizhou/S4184/2017(H5N6) (DK/GZ/S4184/17) (a clade 2.3.4.4d virus), A/chicken/Liaoning/SD007/2017(H5N1) (CK/LN/SD007/17) (a clade 2.3.2.1d virus), and A/chicken/Guangxi/SD098/2017(H7N9) (CK/GX/SD098/17), respectively. The protective efficacy of this novel vaccine and that of the recently used H5/H7 bivalent inactivated vaccine against different H5 and H7N9 viruses was evaluated in chickens. We found that the H5/H7 bivalent vaccine provided solid protection against the H7N9 virus CK/GX/SD098/17, but only 50–60% protection against different H5 viruses. In contrast, the novel H5/H7 trivalent vaccine provided complete protection against the H5 and H7 viruses tested. Our study underscores the importance of timely updating of vaccines for avian influenza control.
Docetaxel‐based chemotherapy has generally been considered as one of the effective treatments for castration‐resistant prostate cancer (PCa). However, clinical treatment with docetaxel often ...encounters a number of undesirable effects, including drug resistance. Tubulin isoforms have been previously examined for their resistance to docetaxel in many cancers, but their real mechanisms remained unclear. In this study, a series of docetaxel‐resistant PC/DX cell sublines were established by chronically exposing PC3 to progressively increased concentrations of docetaxel. Western blotting results showed significantly higher expression of acetyl‐tubulin, α‐tubulin, β‐tubulin, γ‐tubulin, and βIII‐tubulin in PC/DX25 than in parental PC3 cells. PC/DX25 with greater resistance to docetaxel had higher levels of acetyl‐tubulin and mitotic centromere‐associated kinesin (MCAK) than PC3 cells. This study found that docetaxel induced the expression of acetyl‐tubulin and MCAK in PC3 cells at a dose‐ and time‐dependent manner. Both mRNA and protein levels of histone deacetylase 6 (HDAC6) were significantly decreased in PC/DX25 compared with PC3 cells. PC3 increased the resistance to docetaxel by HDAC6 knockdown and Tubastatin A (HDAC6 inhibitor). Conversely, PC/DX25 reversed the sensitivity to docetaxel by MCAK knockdown. Notably, flow cytometry analysis revealed that MCAK knockdown induced significantly sub G1 fraction in PC/DX cells. Overexpression of polo‐like kinase‐1 increased the cell survival rate and resistance to docetaxel in PC3 cells. Moreover, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) activation induced the upregulation of acetyl‐tubulin in docetaxel‐resistant PCa cells. These findings demonstrated that the EGFR‐mediated upregulated expression of acetyl‐tubulin played an important role in docetaxel‐resistant PCa.
Objectives
To evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and esthetic outcomes of immediate implant placement with buccal bone dehiscence in the anterior maxilla.
Methods
In this case series, implants were ...inserted immediately after tooth extraction in sockets with buccal bone dehiscence. Guided bone regeneration (GBR) with a papilla preservation flap and simultaneous connective tissue grafting (CTG) was used. The following outcome variables were measured: mid‐facial mucosal recession, probing depth, bleeding on probing, Pink Esthetic Score (PES), marginal bone loss, and thickness of buccal bone plate (TBP).
Results
12 patients were recruited. Stable mid‐facial mucosal level (−0.03 ± 0.17 mm) and excellent soft‐tissue esthetic outcomes (PES, 9.17 ± 0.72) were achieved at 1 year. The TBP at platform level was 2.01 ± 0.31 mm at 1‐year follow up with a resorption rate of 28.90% ± 15.14%.
Conclusions
Immediate implant placement using GBR performed with a papilla preservation approach and simultaneous CTG is a feasible treatment procedure in compromised extraction sockets in the anterior region. Favorable esthetic outcomes and buccal bone thickness were obtained. Further studies were needed to evaluate the long‐term tissue alteration.
Malaria control and elimination are challenged by diversity and complexity of the determinants on the international border in the Great Mekong Sub-region. Hekou, a Chinese county on the China-Vietnam ...border, was used to document Chinese experiences and lessons for malaria control and elimination.
The design was an ecological study. Malaria burden before 1951 and procedures of 64 years (1952-2015) from malaria hyperendemicity to elimination are described. Single and bilinear regression analysis was utilized to analyse the relationship between the annual malaria incidence (AMI) and gross domestic product (GDP), urbanization rate, and banana planting area (BPA).
There was a huge malaria burden before 1951. AMI was reduced from 358.62 per 1000 person-years in 1953 to 5.69 per 1000 person-years in 1960. A system of primary health services, comprising three levels of county township hospitals and village health stations maintained malaria control and surveillance activities in changing political and social-economic settings. However, potential under-reported of malaria and market-oriented healthcare led to a malaria epidemic in 1987. Strong political commitment reoriented malaria from a control to an elimination programme. High coverage of malaria intervention and population access to intervention was crucial for malaria control and elimination; meanwhile, AMI was closely associated with socio-economic development, correlation coefficients (R) -0.6845 (95% CI -0.7978, -0.6845) for national GDP, -0.7014 (-0.8093, -0.7014) for national urbanization rate and -0.5563 (-0.7147, -0.3437) for BPA.
Multifactor, including political commitment, effective interventions, social and economic development and changing ecological environment, and the complicated interactions between these factors contribute to malaria elimination in Hekou County.
Hydrogel bioelectronics as one of the next-generation wearable and implantable electronics ensures excellent biocompatibility and softness to link the human body and electronics. However, volatile, ...opaque, and fragile features of hydrogels due to the sparse and microscale three-dimensional network seriously limit their practical applications. Here, we report a type of smart and robust nanofibrillar poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) organohydrogels fabricated via one-step physical cross-linking. The nanofibrillar network cross-linked by numerous PVA nanocrystallites enables the formation of organohydrogels with high transparency (90%), drying resistance, high toughness (3.2 MJ/m
), and tensile strength (1.4 MPa). For strain sensor application, the PVA ionic organohydrogel after soaking in NaCl solution shows excellent linear sensitivity (GF = 1.56,
> 0.998) owing to the homogeneous nanofibrillar PVA network. We demonstrate the potential applications of the nanofibrillar PVA-based organohydrogel in smart contact lens and emotion recognition. Such a strategy paves an effective way to fabricate strong, tough, biocompatible, and ionically conductive organohydrogels, shedding light on multifunctional sensing applications in next-generation flexible bioelectronics.
