In the reaction of 1,3-dimethyl-pyrazole-5-carboxylic acid (HL) with
M(OAc)2?4H2O, (M = Cu, Co) two novel complexes have been prepared,
square-planar CuL2(H2O)2 and octahedral CoL2(MeOH)4. The ...crystal
structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both
complexes the deprotonated acid displays monodentate coordination to the
metal ions. According to the results of CSD survey this is the first
structural report on the metal complexes with N1-substituted
pyrazole-5-carboxylic ligand.
Neisseria gonorrhoea e and Chlamydia trachomatis are pathogens commonly isolated in pelvic inflammatory disease. Neisseria gonorrhoea e may uncommonly spread outside the urogenital tract to cause ...complications. We present 2 cases of adolescents with ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection due to N. gonorrhoea e, requiring shunt externalization.
Purpose: Anxiety disorder affects almost one third of adolescents, while 10-15% of adolescents suffer from Major Depressive Disorder. Yet, less than a third of adolescents receive treatment for these ...mental illnesses. Many research efforts have been devoted to the development of better treatments, but they can only be as effective as they are utilized. In order to address the issues of anxiety and depression in adolescence, we first must understand the risk factors that prevent individuals from eventually seeking help. Adolescents who feel they do not need treatment, or have a low perceived need, are less likely to engage in treatment. In our conceptual model, we hypothesize low perceived need is influenced by higher negative health beliefs such as stigma, low knowledge about depression and anxiety, and a lack of social support. Methods: In a pilot randomized controlled trial of Supporting Our Valued Adolescents (SOVA), a technology intervention to support treatment uptake compared to usual care, adolescents between the age of 12-19 with symptoms of depression or anxiety and referred for mental health treatment were recruited. The current analysis is based on baseline data for adolescents (n=34) recruited for this study. Perceived need was measured by the open-ended question, "Do you believe that you need any mental health service (this includes getting help from a mental health professional like a counselor or psychologist and/or being prescribed a medication for any personal or emotional problems)?" with a yes/no response. Additional measures were used to capture stigma, depression literacy (D-Lit), anxiety literacy (A-Lit), and social support. Results: Over a quarter, 26.5% (n =9/34), of adolescents referred to treatment perceived that they do not need treatment. The mean stigma score for adolescents who denied need for treatment (n =9) was 28.11, while the mean stigma score for adolescents who acknowledged need for treatment (n =25) was 24.96. The mean D-Lit score for adolescents who denied need for treatment (n =9) was 10.89, while the mean D-Lit score for adolescents who acknowledged need for treatment (n =25) was 12.16. The mean A-Lit score for adolescents who denied need for treatment (n =9) was 6.89, while the mean A-Lit score for adolescents who acknowledged need for treatment (n =25) was 9.48. The mean social support score for adolescents who denied need for treatment (n =9) was 50.35, while the mean social support score for adolescents who acknowledged need for treatment (n =25) was 62.5. Preliminary analysis using t-test, found no significant association between these factors and perceived need, although there may be a trend with perceived stigma (t =0.947, p =0.099). Conclusions: Further testing with a larger sample size and comparison with parent data may reveal additional factors related to adolescent perceived need for mental health services. The current data supports the conceptual model as factors predicted to influence perceived need change in the predicted direction. Interventions like SOVA that counter negative health beliefs, provide psychoeducation, and offer online social support can be built to target factors which influence perceived need in an effort to increase utilization of mental health treatment through building on adolescents' strengths.
