The links between disasters and violence either self-directed or interpersonal are now more recognized. Nevertheless, the amount of research is limited. This article discusses the underlying ...association of disasters and violence and it also outlines a systematic review of the literature from 1976 to 2011. Finally, it concludes and recommends particular approaches for further epidemiological research.
This study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marriage, divorce, birth, and death rates using the Poisson regression model and an interrupted time-series Poisson regression model. Before ...the pandemic, marriage and birth rates were decreasing, while divorce and death rates were increasing, with only the trend in birth rates being statistically significant. The immediate effect of the pandemic was a significant decrease in the divorce rate, but there were non-significant effects on birth and marriage rates. However, in the months following the onset of the pandemic, there was a statistically significant sustained effect on increasing death and divorce rates. Forecasts based on pre-pandemic data showed that by the end of 2020, marriage, divorce, death, and birth rates were higher compared to pre-pandemic levels. In conclusion, the pandemic has greatly impacted society, particularly in terms of death and divorce rates. Birth rates were not immediately affected to the time lag between decisions and actual births. Fear of COVID-19 may have increased death rates as people avoided seeking medical help. Vaccination and effective treatment strategies are vital in reducing the pandemic's impact on mortality. Supporting families financially is important due to the role of economic issues in couples' decisions.
Suicide is a major public health challenge worldwide with an increasing trend. Identifying risk factors for suicide attempts and suicide deaths may help find useful ways to prevent suicide. We aimed ...to determine the trend and related factors of suicide attempts and suicide deaths in Rafsanjan. This retrospective study included all suicide cases from 2018 to 2022 in Rafsanjan, a city in the southeast of Iran. The information was extracted from the suicide registration system of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences. Univariable and multivariable logistics regression models were used to investigate factors affecting suicide death. A total of 2039 cases of suicide, including 1932 cases (94.75%) of suicide attempts and 107 cases (5.25%) of suicide deaths were recorded during the study period. The frequency of suicide deaths and suicide attempts per 100,000 people increased in 2022 compared to 2018 in both genders. In the adjusted model, the odds of suicide deaths in males was 6.48 (95% CI 3.39-12.42) times higher than in females. Also, the odds of suicide deaths in unemployed subjects and housewives were 2.64 (95% CI 1.50-4.67) and 7.45 (95% CI 3.08-18.07) times higher than employed subjects respectively. Finally, people with education less than a diploma had 10.85 (95% CI 1.48-79.54) times higher odds of suicide deaths compared to people with university education. The present research showed that the pattern of suicide has been increasing since 2018, and we may see an upward trend in the coming years, which requires further investigation and preventive measures. Male gender, low education level, unemployment, and being a housewife were associated with the highest frequency of suicide death.
Although intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) has been suggested as a promising method for the management of peritoneal dissemination (PD) of ovarian or colorectal cancers, the actual clinical use of ...this method has been restricted due to such problems as poor drug penetration into the tumor and high side effects. It is, therefore, necessary to develop new strategies to improve the efficacy of this approach. In the present work, a new strategy is proposed based on intraperitoneal (IP) injection of thermosensitive liposomal doxorubicin (TSL-Dox) with triggered release by mild hyperthermia induced by high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). A computational model is developed to evaluate the proposed drug delivery system. Results show an order of magnitude increase in drug penetration depth into the tumor compared to the conventional IP delivery. Furthermore, the effects of thermal conditions applied to the tumor, TSL size, tumor vessel permeability, and tumor size are investigated. Results indicate an improved efficiency of the drug delivery by expanding the heated region, yet, it increases the risk of unintentional TSL drug load release in the peritoneal cavity. Results also indicate that smaller TSLs have better treatment outcome. However, there is a significant reduction in treatment efficacy for TSLs with sizes smaller than the vessel wall pore size. Thus, tuning the size of TSL should be based on the tumor microvascular permeability. The simulation results suggest that the TSL-Dox delivery system in smaller tumors is far advantageous than larger ones. Results of our model can be used as guidelines for future preclinical studies.
English has become the most frequently used language for scientific communication in the biomedical field. Therefore, scholars from all over the world try to publish their findings in English. This ...trend has a number of advantages, along with several disadvantages.
In the current article, the most important disadvantages of publishing biomedical research articles in English for non-native speakers of English are reviewed.
The most important disadvantages of publishing biomedical research articles in English for non-native speakers may include: Overlooking, either unintentionally or even deliberately, the most important local health problems; failure to carry out groundbreaking research due to limited medical research budgets; violating generally accepted codes of publication ethics and committing research misconduct and publications in open-access scam/predatory journals rather than prestigious journals.
The above mentioned disadvantages could eventually result in academic establishments becoming irresponsible or, even worse, corrupt. In order to avoid this, scientists, scientific organizations, academic institutions, and scientific associations all over the world should design and implement a wider range of collaborative and comprehensive plans.
Intraperitoneal (IP) chemotherapy is a promising treatment approach for patients diagnosed with peritoneal carcinomatosis, allowing the direct delivery of therapeutic agents to the tumor site within ...the abdominal cavity. Nevertheless, limited drug penetration into the tumor remains a primary drawback of this method. The process of delivering drugs to the tumor entails numerous complications, primarily stemming from the specific pathophysiology of the tumor. Investigating drug delivery during IP chemotherapy and studying the parameters affecting it are challenging due to the limitations of experimental studies. In contrast, mathematical modeling, with its capabilities such as enabling single-parameter studies, and cost and time efficiency, emerges as a potent tool for this purpose. In this study, we developed a numerical model to investigate IP chemotherapy by incorporating an actual image of a tumor with heterogeneous vasculature. The tumor’s geometry is reconstructed using image processing techniques. The model also incorporates drug binding and uptake by cancer cells. After 60 min of IP treatment with Doxorubicin, the area under the curve (AUC) of the average free drug concentration versus time curve, serving as an indicator of drug availability to the tumor, reached 295.18 mol·m−3·s−1. Additionally, the half-width parameter W1/2, which reflects drug penetration into the tumor, ranged from 0.11 to 0.14 mm. Furthermore, the treatment resulted in a fraction of killed cells reaching 20.4% by the end of the procedure. Analyzing the spatial distribution of interstitial fluid velocity, pressure, and drug concentration in the tumor revealed that the heterogeneous distribution of tumor vasculature influences the drug delivery process. Our findings underscore the significance of considering the specific vascular network of a tumor when modeling intraperitoneal chemotherapy. The proposed methodology holds promise for application in patient-specific studies.
There are many published articles which cover current and future challenges of epidemiology. However, up until now, most of them are written by developed world epidemiologists. Therefore, despite a ...common use of assumptions, they did not have the opportunity to discuss the different range of practical tasks and priorities away from developed countries. The topics covered are; facing poverty, non-democratic government that has links to developed countries, man-made and natural disasters, handling low-quality data and accessing it, and finally improving contribution to the world epidemiological knowledge for the 21st century.
