It has been widely argued among researchers that the application of big data analytics promises to reduce human bias and provide a scientific and evidence-based approach to the judicial process. In ...this dataset, historical data consisting of appeal cases presented at the Supreme Court of Nigeria (SCN) were collected from an online repository (Primsol Law Pavillion). A total of 5585 appeal cases brought before the SCN were collected from the archive. The dataset consisted of both criminal and civil appeal cases brought before the SCN. Variables that are related to court case proceedings were identified from related literature, verified by legal experts and used as a basis for generating an electronic structured version of the dataset stored as a spreadsheet file from the unstructured data. From the collected data, thirteen input variables were identified with one output/decision variable. The distribution of the numerical variables was presented as a descriptive statistical summary in terms of the minimum, maximum, mode, mean and standard deviation. The developed dataset can assist researchers to build predictive systems by training their models. Various feature extraction techniques can also be applied on the dataset to remove irrelevant or redundant features for increased performance of such classifiers that are needed to predict the outcome of legal cases.
Fermented cassava is obtained through fermentation process where the main role is played by various lactic acid bacteria (LAB), while the by-products (effluents) are discarded. The objective of this ...study was to isolate, identify and analyze potential probiotics in fermented cassava by-products/effluents using molecular techniques. We quantified the LAB's metabolites and tested their antimicrobial properties. We isolated 13 LAB strains which are all Gram-positive, and catalase, oxidase, indole and coagulase negative. Only 6 out of 13 selected isolates survived the low pH of 1.5 and 0.3% bile salt. These 6 isolates showed different levels of antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens with zones of inhibition ranging from 5.10 mm to 22.80 mm. The isolated LAB were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Limosilactobacillus fermentum. The results indicated that the selected LAB strains have potential as probiotics due to their ability to survive in acidic and bile-rich environments as well as their antimicrobial properties.
The study examined public perception of Nigeria Center of Disease Control’s (NCDC) radio campaign messages in managing the Covid-19 pandemic in three selected states in the south-western part of the ...country. A survey research design was adopted with a questionnaire as a data collection instrument. A sample size of 400 respondents was chosen through the multistage approach. The study revealed that the residents in selected states in South-Western Nigeria reported exposure to radio campaign messages on COVID-19 preventive measures and perceived that the messages influenced the awareness and adoption of COVID-19 preventive measures. It was recommended that behavioral change communication experts and public health officers at all levels should leverage the reliability and spread of radio among the populace to disseminate public health issues.
This study examined the influence of food consumption diversity on adequate intakes of food calories, proteins and micronutrients among households in rural Nigeria within the framework of panel data ...econometrics using a nationally representative data. We found that substantial proportion of households suffered deficiency of calories, proteins and certain micronutrients; with higher percentage of sufferer households occurring in the post-planting season. The different measures of dietary diversity (constructed and used for analysis) consistently indicate significant and positive influence of dietary diversity on the likelihood of adequate consumption of food nutrients. While higher level of income, education and non-farm enterprise engagement may strongly stimulate adequate nutrient intakes, increases in the number of adolescents would substantially diminish it. Although our findings call for renewed attention on diet diverseness, we stress the complementary/synergistic roles of education and rural income improvement, especially through non-farm enterprise diversification in tackling multiple nutritional deficiencies in rural Nigeria.
The manufacturing industry is regarded as one of the most demanding verticals with respect to URLLC requirements. A Device-to-Device (D2D) communication system is a key enabler that has been ...introduced to support URLLC. To enhance spectrum utilisation, D2D links can share access of radio spectrum resources occupied by cellular users. Spectrum reuse may result in performance degradation due to mutual co-channel interference of co-existing cellular and D2D users. Resource sharing in a D2D-based cellular network for wireless industrial applications is investigated in this article. The presented schemes aim to maximise the overall system throughput while maintaining the Quality of Service/Experience (QoS/QoE) requirements. Interference is managed by jointly considering admission and power control based on the relative distance between devices. A priced-Deferred Acceptance (p-DA) scheme with an incentive-based stability is developed to match D2D users to cellular resources. Numerical simulations show that the p-DA scheme is able to achieve better performance than the conventional DA algorithm and is close in performance to the presented centralised optimisation approach.
This study reports on the effects of pretreated biogas slurry on degraded farm soil properties, microflora and the production of
spp. The responses of soil properties, microorganisms and
spp. ...production to biogas slurry pretreated soil were determined. The biogas slurry pretreatment of degraded soil increases the total nitrogen (0.15-0.32 g/kg), total phosphorus (0.13-0.75 g/kg), available phosphorus (102.62-190.68 mg/kg), available potassium (78.94-140.31 mg/kg), organic carbon content (0.67-3.32 g/kg) and pH value of the soil, while the population, diversity and distribution of soil bacteria and fungi were significantly affected. Interestingly, soil ammonium nitrogen, soil pH and soil nitrate nitrogen were highly correlated with the population of bacteria and fungi present in the pretreated soil. The soil with biogas slurry pretreatment of 495 m
/hm
favored the seedling survival rate, flowering rate and fruit-bearing rate of
spp. and significantly reduced the rate of rigid seedlings. In this study, the application of 495 m
/hm
biogas slurry to pretreat degraded soil has achieved the multiple goals of biogas slurry valorization, soil biofertilization and preventing and controlling plant diseases caused by soil-borne pathogenic microorganisms. These findings are of significant importance for the safe and environmentally friendly application of biogas slurry for soil pretreatment.
Batik has been the cultural heritage of the Indonesian nation since the 17
th
century. On 2 October 2009, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated ...Batik as part of Indonesia’s traditional clothing as Indonesia’s cultural heritage. This research proves that Batik is an attractive and artistic ornament of ceramic jewelry products. This ornament can increase the selling value and storytelling of the product. Naruna is a local handmade porcelain ceramic factory in Indonesia with excellence in unique colored tableware and consistently trying to develop new designs in ceramic jewelry. Modern technology in computer-based virtual design and machining on dining plate tableware with the Batik Kawung motif is also applied in this paper to obtain a master design for ceramic jewelry prints. The design stage begins with selecting ornament patterns with creative methods to form a 3D CAD model of ceramic jewelry using artistic Art CAM. The optimization of computer-aided manufacturing-based to obtain machining strategy using the software. The software is Autodesk Power Mill, whose NC Code can be directly manufactured on a CNC router machine. This combination can speed up the production process time to meet the production capacity at Naruna and get detailed, accurate, precise, and consistent textures and ornaments, thereby meeting NCS consumer demand for ceramic jewelry products. The simulation results of the two master print patterns are 141 h, 56 min, and 46 s; the machining time is estimated at 153 h. This research saves about 11 h of time processing. The resulting NC Code can be appropriately processed on a CNC router machine with a Mach 3 post-processor.
Evaporative cooling technology has a potential to serve as a substitute to conventional vapor compression cooling. Direct evaporative cooling however usually introduces more moisture to the cooling ...space. In this study, the performance of a modified direct evaporative cooling system that combines a cooling pad and a removable dehumidifying pad has been experimentally evaluated for space cooling. The cooling pad is made of luffa fiber lagged with charcoal, while the dehumidifying pad is made of activated carbon derived from tamarind seed. Results for two experimental days, which span from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm each day are reported in this work. The peak cooling load requirement of the room was evaluated as 4.53 kW. On the first experimental day, in which the dehumidifying pad was removed from the system, results indicated a minimum room temperature of 24
o
C was achieved, which resulted in a maximum temperature drop of 11
o
C from ambient temperature. However, indoor relative humidity increased to a maximum of 84%, while outdoor relative humidity was 30%. The dehumidifying pad was used on the second experimental day. Results from the second experimental day showed a minimum room temperature of 26.5
o
C was achieved, resulting in a maximum temperature drop of 10
o
C from ambient. Maximum indoor relative humidity recorded was 49%, while the outdoor relative humidity was 34%, an indication that the dehumidifying pad was able to absorb moisture from the cooled air. Maximum cooling capacity, efficiency, and COP of 3.84 kW, 84.6% and 16.1 respectively were achieved by the system without the dehumidifying pad. Corresponding values of 3.2 kW, 71.4% and 13.4 respectively were recorded when the system was operated with the dehumidifying pad.
