In this paper, preliminary results about both the chemical and physical behaviours of hemp fibres in calcium rich medium are presented. The influence of hemp fibres introduction in Portland cement ...pastes on the setting time has been investigated. It seems that pectin contained in the fibres can form complex molecules with calcium ions and could be responsible for the observed delay. The role of fibres surface treatment has been also studied. Chemical attack of the fibres surface by an alkaline and calcium rich solution degrades hemicelluloses contained in the fibres and seems to roughen the surface. This surface modification seems to play a major role in the strengthening of the cement/fibres interface. These results show that hemp fibres introduced in cement pastes exhibit a typical composite behaviour compared to cement sample, which lead to an improvement of the mechanical properties.
Cyanobacterial blooms and hepatotoxic microcystins (MCs) usually occur in summer, constituting a sanitary and environmental problem in Salto Grande Dam, Argentina. Water sports and recreational ...activities take place in summer in this lake. We reported an acute case of cyanobacterial poisoning in Salto Grande dam, Argentina, which occurred in January 2007. Accidentally, a young man was immersed in an intense bloom of Microcystis spp. A level of 48.6 μg·L(-1) of microcystin-LR was detected in water samples. Four hours after exposure, the patient showed nausea, abdominal pain and fever. Three days later, dyspnea and respiratory distress were reported. The patient was hospitalized in intensive care and diagnosed with an atypical pneumonia. Finally, a week after the exposure, the patient developed a hepatotoxicosis with a significant increase of hepatic damage biomarkers (ALT, AST and γGT). Complete recovery took place within 20 days. This is the first study to show an acute intoxication with microcystin-producing cyanobacteria blooms in recreational water.

μg of pure MC-LR/kg body weight or saline solution for 1 month (every 2 days) with the aim of producing an inflictive stage with evident damage. Histopathological analysis of dissected livers of mice showed a disrupted lobar architecture and the development of cytoplasmatic vacuoles. According to this, a significant increase in hepatic lipid content and in lipid peroxidation levels in liver and kidney was found in MC-LR-treated animals when compared with controls. Moreover, serum alkaline phosphatase and aspartate aminotransferase activities showed a significant alteration in MC-LR-treated animals. After damage, progression or recovery was studied for 1 and 2 months of wash-out. The recovery from liver damage was evident at the cytological and physiological level, only the recovery of lobar architecture was incomplete along the period investigated. In conclusion, the present study demonstrates the ability of hepatic tissue to recover from damage produced by sub-chronic MC-LR administration. The dynamic interplay between damage and tissue-repairing response in determining the ultimate outcome of toxicity should be considered in risk-assessment studies.

Short treatment protocol incremented heart-rate variability. Contractility was augmented only under prolonged exposure to cannabis and it was associated with incremented calcium transient within cardiomyocytes. Neither the activity of the major proteins responsible for calcium handling nor the calcium load of the sarcoplasmic reticulum were affected by the cannabis treatment. The Rosetta software for macromolecular modeling, docking and design is extensively used in laboratories worldwide. During two decades of development by a community of laboratories at more than 60 ...institutions, Rosetta has been continuously refactored and extended. Its advantages are its performance and interoperability between broad modeling capabilities. Here we review tools developed in the last 5 years, including over 80 methods. The ...objective of this study was to examine the associations between vascular health and a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy among women ≥ 2 years postpartum.
Pre-menopausal women with a history of either a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy (cases: preeclampsia or gestational hypertension) or a normotensive pregnancy (controls) were enrolled. Participants were assessed for standard ASCVD risk factors and underwent vascular testing, including measurements of blood pressure, endothelial function, and carotid artery ultrasound. The primary outcomes were blood pressure, ASCVD risk, reactive hyperemia index measured by EndoPAT and carotid intima-medial thickness. The secondary outcomes were augmentation index normalized to 75 beats per minute and pulse wave amplitude measured by EndoPAT, and carotid elastic modulus and carotid beta-stiffness measured by carotid ultrasound.
Participants had a mean age of 40.7 years and were 5.7 years since their last pregnancy. In bivariate analyses, cases (N = 68) were more likely than controls (N = 71) to have hypertension (18% vs 4%, P = .034), higher calculated ASCVD risk (0.6 vs 0.4, P = .02), higher blood pressures (systolic: 118.5 vs 111.6 mm Hg, P = .0004; diastolic: 75.2 vs 69.8 mm Hg, P = .0004), and higher augmentation index values (7.7 vs 2.3, P = .03). They did not, however, differ significantly in carotid intima-media thickness (0.5 vs 0.5, P = .29) or reactive hyperemia index (2.1 vs 2.1, P = .93), nor in pulse wave amplitude (416 vs 326, P = .11), carotid elastic modulus (445 vs 426, P = .36), or carotid beta stiffness (2.8 vs 2.8, P = .86).
Women with a prior hypertensive disorder of pregnancy had higher ASCVD risk and blood pressures several years postpartum, but did not have more endothelial dysfunction or subclinical atherosclerosis.
Vagal stimulation inhibits systemic pain perception in animals, probably via the nucleus tractus solitarius and its connections with descending nuclei in the brainstem which inhibit pain. ...Pain-inhibiting effects of such stimulation in humans, obtained from epileptic patients treated by vagal stimulation, are controversial. The aim of our study was to evaluate whether vagal stomach afferent activation inhibits pain perception in healthy humans. Pain thresholds, magnitude of tonic heat pain at 46 degrees C stimulation, pain temporal summation and laser pain evoked potentials were measured at the hand before and immediately after rapid drinking of 1500 ml water in 31 volunteers. We found an increase in heat pain threshold from 43.3+/-2.6 to 44.7+/-2.2 degrees C, P<0.0001, a decrease of peak pain magnitude to tonic heat from 56.3+/-26.2 to 43.7+/-25.8 (on 0-100 VAS), P<0.0001, a lowering of area under the curve during tonic noxious heat stimulus from 1962+/-984 to 1411+/-934, P<0.001. Additionally, we observed a decrease in the peak to peak evoked potential amplitude from 19.2 microV+/-1.2 to 15.6 microV+/-1.2 (P=0.005) together with a decrease in the estimation of mean laser induced pain from 52.28+/-18.00 to 48.14+/-20.18 (P=0.025). Mechanical pain thresholds and temporal summation did not change significantly. We conclude that vagal stomach afferents exert an inhibitory effect on somatic pain perception in humans.
