Introduction/Purpose:
In general, Static Stretching (SS) is widely used during warm-ups and cool-downs at competitive practices and events. Previous studies have shown that SS ...have improved muscle stiffness. On the other hand, previous studies have not shown range of motion, or vertical jump. Recently, acute effects of Cyclic Stretching (CS) have suggested to improve muscle stiffness and dynamic balance. CS is moved at a constant speed and angle using continuous passive and dynamometer-equipped exercise equipment. However, long-term CS and SS programs have been shown to improve muscle stiffness, hardness, and It is not known if muscle strength or physical performance is altered. This study aimed to examine the effects of a 4-week CS and SS program on muscle stiffness and hardness, muscle strength, and jump performance.
Methods:
The subjects participated 18 healthy men and were randomly assigned to a CS or SS group. Each stretching program was stretched in each condition for 2 minutes in a standing position in 5 days a week for 4 weeks. To assess muscle stiffness, muscle- tendon junction (MTJ) displacement and MTJ angle of gastrocnemius medialis (MG) were measured using ultrasonography and 20° before (pre-training) and after (post-training) conducting CS and SS program. MG hardness was measured using ultrasound real- time tissue elastography (RTE). ROM max and normalized peak torque (NPT) of ankle plantar flexor, squat jump (SJ) performance were measured in the pre- and post-training. The effects of the intervention on all outcome measures were determined using 2- way repeated-measures ANOVA with two group as a between participants factor and time (pre-training, post-training) When interaction effects were detected, post hoc comparisons were performed to test the differences in physical variables between pre- and post-training.
Results:
ROM max was significantly affected by time between CS and SS program (P < .001, F = 26.0). MTJ displacement from 0°to 20°were significantly affected by time (P < .05, F = 5.49; P < .01, F = 10.26; P < .01, F = 9.74). RTE from 0°to 20°were significantly affected by time (P < .01, F = 13.27; P < .01, F = 8.33; P < .01, F = 53.52). There was significantly interaction for NPT between CS and SS program (P < .01, F = 4.80). SJ were significantly affected by time (P < .05, F = 5.70).
Conclusion:
This study examined the long-term effect of CS and SS on ROM max, muscle stiffness, NPT, and SJ. The results indicate that CS training had greater improvement than SS training in muscle strength between pre- and post-training. A significant decrease in muscle stiffness and hardness after SS was observed compared with CS. However, CS not only improves muscle stiffness and hardness as shown the effect of SS but also suggests the possibility of being a new extension method to improve muscle strength.
Ciliary beat frequency (CBF) is crucial in mucociliary clearance. High-speed video analysis (HSVA) is commonly used to measure CBF but lacks standardization. We compared visual observation and ...computer-assisted calculation using fast Fourier transformation (FFT) in freshly collected bronchial ciliary epithelial cells and cultured cells.
Bronchial epithelial cells were obtained from 12 patients who required bronchoscopic examination. Eighty-five videos of ciliary movement of freshly collected and cultured cells were recorded and used to calculate CBF using manual observation, region of interest (ROI) selection, and whole-field analysis.
CBF measured by the ROI selection method strongly correlated with that measured using manual observation, especially in freshly collected cells. However, 27.8% of the manual observation method values were doubled in the ROI selection method, probably because a round trip of cilia was calculated as two cycles and needed to be corrected to 1/2 value. Upon increasing the number of ROIs, the results of the ROI selection method came closer to that of WFA.
Computer-assisted calculation using FFT can aid in measuring CBF; however, current methods require visual confirmation. Further automated evaluation techniques are needed to establish more standardized and generalized CBF measurement methods using HSVA.
To determine the phenotype of a Japanese family in which retinitis pigmentosa cosegregates with a rhodopsin gene mutation, i.e. an asparagine-to-serine change at codon 15 (Asn-15-Ser), 5 affected and ...5 unaffected members of one pedigree underwent several ophthalmic examinations as well as Ganzfeld electroretinography (ERG) and multifocal ERG. Genomic DNA samples were analyzed by PCR amplification, sequencing and restriction enzyme digestion. A codon 15 rhodopsin gene mutation (Asn-15-Ser) was found in all affected members. The region of pigmentary degeneration was localized in the lower hemiretina, and visual field defects corresponded to the retinal pigmentary changes. Scotopic ERG amplitudes, rather than photopic ERG amplitudes, were reduced. Multifocal ERG revealed a low magnitude of response density, even for the upper hemiretina, which showed no bony corpuscle pigmentation. Visual function in sectorial retinitis pigmentosa associated with rhodopsin gene codon 15 mutation is on the basis of the rod-cone dystrophy, regardless of differences in phenotypic expression.
Heterozygous missense mutation in codon 15 of the rhodopsin gene was detected in a patient with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa (ADRP), where a transition of adenine to guanine at the second ...nucleotide in codon 15 (AAT-->AGT), corresponding to a substitution of serine residue for asparagine residue (Asn-15-Ser) was detected. None of the remaining unrelated 42 ADRP, 24 autosomal recessive RP (ARRP) and 34 normal individuals had this alteration. Her funduscopic findings were sectorial in type similar to that of the patients with the same mutation found in an Australian pedigree (Sullivan et al., 1993). This study shows phenotypic similarities in patients with the same mutation of a different ancestry.
To elucidate the stain mechanism for precoated metal (PCM), the effects of surface melamine concentration and stain temperature on the stain resistance of polyester-melamine films were investigated ...by characterizing the surface structure using the FTIR-ATR method and by measuring the crosslinking density of the bulk of the film. The following results were obtained (1) Melamine resin was concentrated in the surface layer of the film when an acid catalyst was used. The surface melamine concentration and the hardness value of the surface (0.2μm in depth) increased with increasing acid catalyst content. On the other hand, these films had a layer that showed a lower hardness value at depths of more than 3μm. (2) Stain resistance at room temperature was improved by increasing the surface melamine concentration. (3) The effect of surface melamine concentration on stain resistance decreased with increasing stain temperature, consequently stain materials permeated deeply into the film as stain temperature increased. The stain temperature at which the effect of surface melamine concentration on stain resistance disappeared increased with increasing film glass transition temperature Tg. (4) The stain resistance at temperatures of 140°C and above was controlled by the crosslinking density of the bulk of the film.
