The epidemic transmission of Zika virus (ZIKV) in Brazil has been identified as a cause of microcephaly and other neurological malformations in the babies of ZIKV-infected women. The frequency of ...adverse outcomes of Zika virus infection (ZIKVi) in pregnancy differs depending on the characteristics of exposure to infection, the time of recruitment of research participants, and the outcomes to be observed. This study provides a descriptive analysis-from the onset of symptoms to delivery-of a cohort registered as having maternal ZIKVi in pregnancy, from November 2015 to December 2016. Suspected cases were registered at a referral center for infectious and tropical diseases in Manaus, in the Amazonian region of Brazil. Of 834 women notified, 762 women with confirmed pregnancies were enrolled. Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) confirmed ZIKVi in 42.3% of the cohort. In 35.2% of the cohort, ZIKV was the sole infection identified. Severe adverse pregnancy outcomes (miscarriage, stillbirth, or microcephaly) were observed in both RT-PCR ZIKV-positive (5.0%) and ZIKV-negative (1.8%) cases (RR 3.1; 95% IC 1.4-7.3;
< 0.05), especially during the first trimester of pregnancy (RR 6.2, 95% IC 2.3-16.5;
< 0.001). Although other infectious rash diseases were observed in the pregnant women in the study, having confirmed maternal ZIKVi was the most important risk factor for serious adverse pregnancy events.
Introdução: O consumo de comida de rua tem aumentado nos últimos anos, transformando este segmento em um importante comércio de alimentos, com geração de emprego e renda. Objetivo: Este trabalho teve ...como objetivo conhecer o perfil socioeconômico e analisar a percepção sobre a gestão do negócio e boas práticas de manipulação dos manipuladores de comida de rua no município de Niterói/RJ, participantes de um curso on-line sobre boas práticas de manipulação no comércio de comida de rua. Método: A metodologia foi aplicada e descritiva, de abordagem qualitativa e quantitativa. Foi utilizado questionário on-line, com 56 perguntas, aplicado a 67 participantes do curso. Resultados: 86,4 % eram mulheres; faixa etária predominante entre 27 e 62 anos; renda média de até 3 salários mínimos; 35,8% relataram possuir ensino superior incompleto. Apenas 29,9% possuem registro MEI; 72,7% atuam nesse comércio por escolha; 46,3% fazem controle de estoque e 62,5% fazem controle de caixa; 67,2% possuem cursos na área de alimentação; e 47,8% afirmaram ter experiências anteriores. Conclusão: À medida que se observa a consolidação desse segmento, com um potencial de risco sanitário associado, assim como a insuficiência de trabalhos científicos na área, faz-se necessário ampliar os estudos sobre a formação dos manipuladores.

The research for renewable and less polluting fuels has focused on biodiesel. This fuel can derive from vegetable, animal or waste oils, and despite its potential to decrease atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases, its influence on NOx emissions is still uncertain. It is believed that biodiesel emissions, especially NOx vary depending on the feedstock, blend percentage and transesterification route. A better understanding of these factors can help choosing the best blend. In this context, this article aims at evaluating how the variation of these factors affects NOx emissions. Tests are carried out in a stationary internal combustion engine with 20% and 50% blends of methyl and ethyl esters made from soybean oil, palm oil and waste frying oil (collected in the University Campus). The analysis of the results with Tukey’s test compare their means and lead to the conclusion that, when considering the route, ethyl blends have lower NOx emissions, and palm ethyl ester blends had the best results. Also when all factors are taken into account, B20 from soybean methyl ester has the lowest emissions of NOx. We recommend that future studies test the effect of antioxidants in NOx emissions, as well as test higher blend ratios.
Juçara (Euterpe edulis) is a native Brazilian palm tree from the Atlantic Forest, whose fruit-processing waste can present high concentration of antioxidant compounds. This research was assessed to ...determine the antioxidant potential of juçara waste extracts aiming to reduce the lipid and protein oxidation processes on conventional and antibiotic-free broiler meat throughout 9 d during refrigerated storage. The juçara waste extracts were obtained by microwave-assisted extraction. Two different extracts were tested based on the optimum point obtained when checking total phenolic (TPC) contents (Extract P) and antioxidant activity (Extract A) based on a previous study. The treatments using conventional and antibiotic-free broiler meat included: chicken patties without antioxidant addition (AFBNC and CBNC), with synthetic antioxidant (BHT) (AFBPC and CBPC), with Extract P (AFBEP and CBEP) and with Extract A (AFBEA and CBEA), totaling 8 treatments. Antioxidant activity of extracts along with TPC, flavonoid, anthocyanin, and tannin contents of extracts and patties were assessed. Proximate composition, fatty acid profile, lipid and protein oxidation process, and instrumental color were analyzed in patty treatments. Although both extracts had similar content of TPC and tannin, extract A presented the highest anthocyanin, while extract P exhibited the highest flavonoid. While extract A exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, extract P was highly influential in the stability of lipid oxidative degradation in both types of broiler meat (AFBEP and CBEP), and as successful as BHT (AFBPC and CBPC). In addition, extract P was also able to stabilize protein oxidation in conventional broiler meat (CBEP) from the third day, until the end of the storage period. Therefore, the fruit waste extract P of juçara can be a promising source of natural antioxidants to prevent the oxidative process in conventional and antibiotic-free broiler meat.
This study aimed to assess the sonographic features of abdominal organs in healthy captive Neotropical otters (Lontra longicaudis). The sonograph showed that the urinary bladder was located in the ...caudal abdomen and its content was uniformly anechoic. The bladder wall had three layers: outer hyperechoic serosa, hypoechoic muscular layer and hyperechoic mucosa. The mean total wall thickness was 0.10 cm. The splenic parenchyma had a homogeneous echotexture with greater echogenicity than that of the left renal cortex and liver. The borders were regular and tapered. Rugal folds were observed in the stomach when undistended. The mean gastric wall thickness was 0.28 cm and five distinct layers were visible. The liver had smooth contours, and division of the hepatic lobes was not precisely visualized. The hepatic parenchyma had a homogeneous echotexture with greater echogenicity as compared to the right kidney and lesser echogenicity than that of the spleen. The gallbladder appeared as an oval or rounded structure in the transverse plane, filled with homogeneous anechogenic content; the wall was thin, regular and hyperechoic, with a mean thickness of 0.09 cm. The kidneys had a lobulated appearance with renicular subunits. The mean total length of the kidneys in longitudinal plane was 6.18 cm for the left and 6.27 cm for the right. Each reniculus was covered by an echogenic capsule, and the medullary region was more hypoechogenic than the cortical region. In conclusion, sonographic features in most of the abdominal organs in Neotropical otters are similar to the ultrasound patterns observed in healthy dogs and cats, except for kidneys with reniculi.
Resumo Objetivo: identificar fatores associados à contaminação e internação hospitalar por COVID-19 em profissionais de enfermagem. Método: estudo transversal, realizado em hospital especializado em ...cardiologia, com 415 profissionais de enfermagem. Foram avaliadas as variáveis sociodemográficas, comorbidades, condições de trabalho e questões relacionadas ao adoecimento pela COVID-19. Na análise dos dados, utilizaram-se os testes Qui-Quadrado, Fisher, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney e Brunner Munzel, a razão de chances para internação hospitalar, além de regressão logística binária. Resultados: a taxa de profissionais de enfermagem acometidos pela COVID-19 foi de 44,3% e os fatores associados à contaminação foram o número de pessoas no mesmo domicílio com COVID-19 (OR 36,18; p<0,001) e o uso de transporte público (OR 2,70; p=0,044). Ter sintomas graves (OR 29,75), pertencer ao grupo de risco (OR 3,00), apresentar taquipneia (OR 6,48), falta de ar (OR 5,83), cansaço (OR 4,64), febre (OR 4,41) e/ou mialgia (OR 3,00) aumentou as chances de internação hospitalar dos profissionais com COVID-19. Conclusão: habitar o mesmo domicílio que outras pessoas com a doença e usar transporte público aumentou o risco de contaminação pelo novo coronavírus. Os fatores associados à internação hospitalar dos profissionais contaminados foram a presença de fatores de risco para doença, a gravidade e o tipo dos sintomas apresentados.

Método: estudio transversal, realizado en un hospital especializado en cardiología, con 415 profesionales de enfermería. Se evaluaron las variables sociodemográficas, comorbilidades, condiciones de trabajo y preguntas relacionadas con la enfermedad por COVID-19. En el análisis de los datos, se utilizaron las pruebas de Chi-Cuadrado, Fisher, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney y Brunner Munzel, la razón de chance para la hospitalización, además de la regresión logística binaria. Resultados: la tasa de profesionales de enfermería afectados por el COVID-19 fue del 44,3% y los factores asociados al contagio fueron el número de personas en una misma vivienda con COVID-19 (OR 36,18; p<0,001) y el uso de transporte público (OR 2,70; p=0,044). Presentar síntomas graves (OR 29,75), pertenecer al grupo de riesgo (OR 3,00), tener taquipnea (OR 6,48), dificultad para respirar (OR 5,83), cansancio (OR 4,64), fiebre (OR 4,41) y/o mialgia (OR 3,00) aumentó las chances de hospitalización de los profesionales con COVID-19. Conclusión: vivir en el mismo domicilio que otras personas que tienen la enfermedad y utilizar el transporte público aumentó el riesgo de contagio por el nuevo coronavirus. Los factores asociados a la hospitalización de los profesionales contagiados fueron la presencia de factores de riesgo para enfermarse, la gravedad y el tipo de síntomas presentados.
Abstract Objective: to identify factors associated with infection and hospitalization due to COVID-19 in nursing professionals. Method: a cross-sectional study carried out with 415 nursing professionals in a hospital specialized in cardiology. The sociodemographic variables, comorbidities, working conditions and issues related to illness due to COVID-19 were evaluated. Chi-Square, Fisher’s, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney and Brunner Munzel tests were used in data analysis, as well as Odds Ratio for hospitalization, in addition to binary logistic regression. Results: the rate of nursing professionals affected by COVID-19 was 44.3% and the factors associated with infection were the number of people living in the same household infected by COVID-19 (OR 36.18; p<0.001) and use of public transportation (OR 2.70; p=0.044). Having severe symptoms (OR 29.75), belonging to the risk group (OR 3.00), having tachypnea (OR 6.48), shortness of breath (OR 5.83), tiredness (OR 4.64), fever (OR 4.41) and/or myalgia (OR 3.00) increased the chances of hospitalization in professionals with COVID-19. Conclusion: living in the same household as other people with the disease and using public transportation increased the risk of infection by the new coronavirus. The factors associated with the hospitalization of contaminated professionals were presence of risk factors for the disease, severity and type of the symptoms presented.
Canine babesiosis is one of the most relevant hemoparasitoses affecting dogs, its typical clinical signs being lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, weakness, splenomegaly, hemolytic anemia, and ...thrombocytopenia. The conventional definitive diagnosis of canine babesiosis is made by identification of the intraerythrocytic protozoan in a blood smear. In the present report, the patient had ascites and cytologic analysis of the drained peritoneal effusion identified Babesia spp.
A babesiose canina é uma das hemoparasitoses mais importantes que afeta cães, que costumam manifestar sinais clínicos de letargia, anorexia, perda de peso, fraqueza, esplenomegalia, anemia hemolítica e trombocitopenia. O diagnóstico definitivo convencional da babesiose canina é realizado a partir da identificação do protozoário intraeritrocitário no esfregaço sanguíneo. No presente relato, o paciente apresentava ascite e, a partir da análise citológica da efusão peritoneal drenada, foi possível identificar a Babesia spp.
During the past decade, sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor Moench L.) has shown great potential for bioenergy production, especially biofuels. In this study, 223 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived ...from a cross between two sweet sorghum lines (Brandes × Wray) were evaluated in three trials. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) derived from genotyping by sequencing of 272 RILs were used to build a high-density genetic map comprising 3,767 SNPs spanning 1,368.83 cM. Multitrait multiple interval mapping (MT-MIM) was carried out to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for eight bioenergy traits. A total of 33 QTLs were identified for flowering time, plant height, total soluble solids and sucrose (five QTLs each), fibers (four QTLs), and fresh biomass yield, juice extraction yield, and reducing sugars (three QTLs each). QTL hotspots were found on chromosomes 1, 3, 6, 9, and 10, in addition to other QTLs detected on chromosomes 4 and 8. We observed that 14 out of the 33 mapped QTLs were found in all three trials. Upon further development and validation in other crosses, the results provided by the present study have a great potential to be used in marker-assisted selection in sorghum breeding programs for biofuel production.
To analyze the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on the cognitive function of individuals with Alzheimer's disease (AD).
This ...systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression included randomized clinical trials published until 05/2022. We included studies conducted with individuals with AD of both sexes, aged between 55 and 85 years, treated with tDCS, TMS, or both.
Twenty-one studies were included in the systematic review and sixteen in the meta-analysis. Meta-regression suggested a significant influence of anodic tDCS with current intensity of 1.5 mA on cognitive function. Significant results were found with treatment frequencies of three and five days a week for two weeks. Subgroup analysis found that anodic tDCS influences cognitive function, regardless of AD stage. Similar was observed for TMS using a frequency of 20 Hz and current intensity of 90% of the resting motor threshold.
Anodal tDCS and 20 Hz TMS have demonstrated the ability to improve cognitive function in AD by modulating neural activity. These therapies are safe and well-tolerated, offering promise as adjuncts to available pharmacological treatments. Studies with greater methodological rigor and parameter standardization are warranted. Comprehensive investigations involving neuroimaging techniques may provide a better understanding of the interaction between induced electrical fields and the complex neural networks affected in AD, paving the way for more personalized and effective neurostimulation approaches.
A medida socioeducativa (MSE) diz respeito à perspectiva de responsabilização para adolescentes e jovens a quem se atribui a autoria de um ato infracional no Brasil a partir da década de 1990. No que ...se refere ao termo socioeducação, percebe-se que este, ao ser utilizado no contexto das MSE, necessita de conceituações que possibilitem construir e executar uma ação socioeducativa baseada em pressupostos teóricos consistentes. A discussão apresentada neste artigo tem por objetivo caracterizar as concepções teóricas e as bases epistemológicas sobre socioeducação no contexto das MSE com base na literatura sobre o tema. A partir da análise dos textos, pode-se dizer que, no campo das MSE, a socioeducação se caracteriza como categoria teórica em construção, constituída por concepções teórico-epistemológicas diferentes, com destaque para a educação social, justiça restaurativa e políticas públicas, que disputam saberes relacionados à juventude a quem se atribui a autoria de atos infracionais.
