ABSTRACT
We spectroscopically detected 838 likely, 448 probable, and 265 possible strong lens candidates within ≈2 million galaxy spectra contained within the extended Baryon Oscillation ...Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) from the sixteenth data release (DR16) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We apply the spectroscopic detection method of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) Emission-Line Lens Survey (BELLS) and add Gaussian fit information, grading, additional inspection observables, and additional inspection methods to improve our selection method. We observed 477 candidates with lensing evidence within low-resolution images from both the Legacy survey of SDSS-I/II and the DESI Legacy survey, which is $12{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ higher than the percentage of BELLS candidates observed with similar lensing evidence. Our search within the latest and improved reductions of the BOSS survey yielded a $20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ increase in the number of lens candidates expected from searching all BOSS and eBOSS galaxies. The distribution of target and background redshifts of our candidates is similar to the candidates and confirmed lenses within the BELLS observations. We present our Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Object candidates in a value-added catalogue in SDSS DR16. The examination of these lens candidates in follow-up high-resolution imaging may yield more than twice the lenses found in previous spectroscopic detection surveys within SDSS, which would extend the results of previous lens surveys within SDSS to higher redshifts, constrain models of mass structures in spiral galaxies, and test if including the identification of possible lensing features within low-resolution images has merit to spectroscopic detection programmes.
ABSTRACT
We spectroscopically detected candidate emission-lines of 8 likely, 17 probable, and 69 possible strong galaxy–galaxy gravitational lens candidates found within the spectra of $\approx 10\, ...000$ galaxy targets contained within the completed Mapping of Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory survey. This search is based upon the methodology of the Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects project, which extends the spectroscopic detection methods of the BOSS Emission-Line Lensing Survey and the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. We scanned the co-added residuals that we constructed from stacks of foreground subtracted row-stacked-spectra so a sigma-clipping method can be used to reject cosmic rays and other forms of transients that impact only a small fraction of the combined exposures. We also constructed narrow-band images from the signal to noise of the co-added residuals to observe signs of lensed source images. We also use several methods to compute the probable strong lensing regime for each candidate lens to determine which candidate background galaxies may reside sufficiently near the galaxy centre for strong lensing to occur. We present the spectroscopic redshifts within a value-added catalogue (VAC) for data release 17 (DR17) of SDSS-IV. We also present the lens candidates, spectroscopic data, and narrow-band images within a VAC for DR17. High resolution follow-up imaging of these lens candidates are expected to yield a sample of confirmed grade-A lenses with sufficient angular size to probe possible discrepancies between the mass derived from a best-fitting lens model, and the dynamical mass derived from the observed stellar velocities.
Hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC) caused by the CDH1 gene mutation is an inherited cancer syndrome that increases the risk of diffuse gastric cancer and is nearly impossible to detect by ...screening gastroscopy. The recommended preventative treatment is a total gastrectomy. Robotic surgery facilitates the use of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques for anastomoses and posterior vagus preservation to potentially reduce adverse functional outcomes. An asymptomatic 24 year old male with the CDH1 gene mutation proven by genetic testing and a family history of a brother having a total gastrectomy for HDGC was treated with this technique. This video case report demonstrates the techniques and pitfalls of robotic surgery in terms of the patient positioning and port placement, posterior vagus-preserving dissection, sutured esophagojejunostomy, jejunal pouch formation, and Roux-en-Y reconstruction with a staple-stapled jejunojejunostomy. While these techniques are demonstrated in the case of prophylactic gastrectomy, many of them can be applied to other benign and bariatric foregut and general surgery types.Robotic surgery can facilitate the foregut MIS technique, as described in this case of a vagus-sparing total gastrectomy.
This article explores the depiction of public celebration in the late Hamidian period in Ottoman Jerusalem through the relationship between textual and photographic sources and between state ...performers and the viewing public. The joy of public celebrations on the sultan's birthday and accession day conveyed in the Ottoman Turkish and Hebrew press was at odds with formal, flat photographs of the occasion, but in fact shared that aesthetic through its formulaic tropes and language. A key part of the narratives of these occasions in Jerusalem was the performance of music by the military band of the garrison. Through a close reading of these and other images, the uniform images and narratives of these public events of the state can be penetrated, and snapshots of discord, emotion, and reaction emerge that show performances to be perhaps cacophonous affairs, and the attending crowds a part of the scenery rather than active participants. As such, this article considers the role of these photographs in reconstructing both the experiential and political atmospheres of these formal state occasions. In particular, a stereographic image of a concert of the Jerusalem band in 1903 permits an alternative reading of these occasions. Using the chance details captured in these shots, the value of close readings of photographs as microhistories can be found in exposing narratives beyond those peddled by the state, and the flaws and tensions of the relationship between ruler and ruled thus become more readily apparent.
Abstract
We present a catalogue of 38 spectroscopically detected strong galaxy–galaxy gravitational lens candidates identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey IV (SDSS-IV). We were able to simulate ...narrow-band images for eight of them demonstrating evidence of multiple images. Two of our systems are compound lens candidates, each with two background source-planes. One of these compound systems shows clear lensing features in the narrow-band image. Our sample is based on 2812 galaxies observed by the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) integral field unit (IFU). This Spectroscopic Identification of Lensing Objects (SILO) survey extends the methodology of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS) and BOSS Emission-Line Survey (BELLS) to lower redshift and multiple IFU spectra. We searched ∼1.5 million spectra, of which 3065 contained multiple high signal-to-noise ratio background emission-lines or a resolved O ii doublet, that are included in this catalogue. Upon manual inspection, we discovered regions with multiple spectra containing background emission-lines at the same redshift, providing evidence of a common source-plane geometry which was not possible in previous SLACS and BELLS discovery programs. We estimate more than half of our candidates have an Einstein radius ≳ 1.7 arcsec, which is significantly greater than seen in SLACS and BELLS. These larger Einstein radii produce more extended images of the background galaxy increasing the probability that a background emission-line will enter one of the IFU spectroscopic fibres, making detection more likely.
Introduction
Bariatric surgery predisposes patients to nutritional deficiencies. There are limited studies on zinc and copper abnormalities in this cohort.
Purpose
The aim of this study was to ...identify the prevalence of these abnormalities in a cohort of Australian bariatric patients. Inflammatory markers, adherence to multivitamin supplementation (MVS) and the presence of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were also investigated.
Material and Methods
Data was collected on all patients who attended a single clinic in Sydney, Australia, from August 2020 to August 2021.
Results
The study cohort consisted of 231 patients (76.2% female; mean pre-operative body mass index of 43.4 ± 7.1 kg/m
2
), most of whom underwent sleeve gastrectomy (78.8%). Data were collected preoperatively and then at ≤ 6 months, 1 and
>
2 years postoperatively. Prior to surgery, low levels of zinc (2.1%) and copper (0.7%) were rare, but elevated copper levels were common (16.7%) and potentially related to an elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) (47.7%). Following surgery at > 2 years, the mean total weight loss (TWL) was 33.5 ± 12.4. CRP levels improved over time. Post operatively, low zinc (2.7–3.6%) and copper (1.5%) levels were rare. Patients with low levels in zinc and copper were a higher-risk group and generally exhibited GI symptoms, despite taking MVS.
Conclusion
In the initial post-operative stages and with good adherence to MVS containing copper and zinc, abnormalities may not be a concern. Patients with GI symptoms appear to be at higher risk of abnormalities; increasing awareness, thorough screening, and more comprehensive supplementation are recommended.

•Bariatric surgeons, bariatric medical practitioners, bariatric dieticians, the patient’s usual general practitioner, obstetricians, and maternity specialists should be involved to assist in the multidisciplinary management of these complex patients.
