The study was a cross-sectional study. Results of hematologic analyses and serum concentrations of intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP), liver fatty acid-binding protein (L-FABP), trefoil factor 3 (TFF-3), Claudin-3 (CLDN-3), γ-enteric smooth muscle actin (ACTG2), intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP), interleukin-8 (IL-8), platelet-activating factor (PAF), and leptin (LP) were compared among calves grouped according to whether they were healthy (control group; G-1) or had diarrhea caused by K99
(G-2; n = 10), bovine rota- or coronavirus (G-3; 5 each), or
spp (G-4; 10).
Across the 3 time points at which blood samples were obtained and evaluated, the groups of calves with diarrhea generally had markedly higher mean serum concentrations of L-FABP, TFF-3, IAP, IL-8, and LP, compared with the control group. In addition, G-2 also consistently had markedly higher mean serum concentrations of I-FAB and ACTG2 and lower mean serum concentrations of CLDN-3, compared with the control group.
Results indicated that degree of intestinal epithelial damage differed among calves grouped by the etiologic agent of diarrhea and that such damage might have been more severe in calves with diarrhea caused by K99
. Additionally, our results indicated that serum concentrations of I-FABP, L-FABP, TFF-3, IAP, IL-8, ACTG2, LP, and CLDN-3 were useful biomarkers of intestinal epithelial damage in calves of the present study.
Limited data exist on the role of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (FLD) as a potential independent risk factor in the setting of acute coronary syndromes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ...impact of FLD on myocardial perfusion and inhospital major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in the setting of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We examined 186 consecutive nondiabetic patients (mean age 58 ± 11 years and 76% men) who underwent primary PCI for STEMI by ultrasound within 72 hours of admission. FLD was graded according to a semiquantitative severity score as mild (score <3) or moderate to severe (score ≥3). Myocardial perfusion was determined by measuring myocardial blush grade (MBG) and ST-segment resolution (STR) analysis. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to FLD score (<3 or ≥3). There were no differences with regard to postprocedural Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction 3 flow grade between the 2 groups (89% vs 83%, p = 0.201). Patients with FLD score ≥3 were more likely to have absent myocardial perfusion (MBG 0/1, 37% vs 12%, p <0.0001), absent STR (27% vs 9%, p = 0.001), and higher inhospital MACE rate (31% vs 8%, p <0.0001). By multivariate analysis, FLD ≥3 score was found to be an independent predictor of absent MBG 0/1 (odds ratio OR 2.856, 95% confidence interval CI 1.214 to 6.225, p = 0.033), absent STR (OR 2.862, 95% CI 1.242 to 6.342, p = 0.031), and inhospital MACE (OR 2.454, 95% CI 1.072 to 4.872, p = 0.048). In conclusion, we found that despite similar high rates of Thrombolysis In Myocardial Infarction 3 after primary PCI, patients with FLD score ≥3 are more likely to have impaired myocardial perfusion which may contribute to adverse inhospital outcome.
Background: Increasing arterial stiffness is associated with atherosclerosis and there is an association between atherosclerosis and tinnitus may occur.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to ...investigate the relationship between arterial stiffness and tinnitus using the central pulse-wave analysis method.
Methods: This prospective, single center study included 98 participants, comprising 49 patients diagnosed with subjective idiopathic tinnitus (Group 1) and a control group of 49 healthy subjects (Group 2). The Mobil-O-Graph 24 h Pulse wave analysis (PWA) Monitor (I.E.M. GmbH, Stolberg, Germany) was used to determine the arterial stiffness and cardiovascular hemodynamic parameters. Central pulse pressure (CPP), Augmentation index and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were obtained with the device.
Results: No statistically significant difference was determined between Groups in respect of age, smoking and hypertension (p > .05). Statistically significantly higher Central Pulse Pressure (CPP) values and pulse wave velocity were higher in Group 1 compared to the control group (p < .005). No statistical variation was detected in terms of the augmentation index (18.5 ± 11.3 vs 16.7 ± 10.3, p = .543).
Conclusion: Our results marked that arterial stiffness is associated with tinnitus. The relationship was examined via oscillometric method, which is simple to perform and has been recommended in guidelines for the determination of cardiovascular event risk.

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common health problems and has a major effect on quality of life. Although new-generation antihistamines and nasal steroids are the main treatment options, complete resolution cannot be obtained in some patients. Besides common side effects such as nasal irritation and epistaxis, the use of these drugs is controversial in some patients, such as pregnant or breastfeeding women. These findings highlight the need for new treatment options. Although phototherapy has been successfully used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis, which is an IgE-mediated disease and shares several common pathogenic features with allergic rhinitis, there are limited studies about its role in the treatment of allergic rhinitis. In this study, we aimed to evaluate and compare the histopathological effects of intranasal phototherapy (Rhinolight) and nasal corticosteroid treatment on the nasal mucosa in allergic rhinitis in a rabbit model and we found that both treatment options significantly reduced inflammation in the nasal mucosa without increasing apoptosis of mucosal cells.
Virtual simulation and imaging systems have evolved as advanced products of computing technology over the years. With advancements in mobile technology, smartphones, and tablets, the quality of ...display and processing speed have gradually improved, thanks to faster central processing units with higher capacity. Integrating these two technologies into the fields of healthcare and medical education has had a positive impact on surgical training. However, contemporary neurosurgical planning units are expensive and integrated neuronavigation systems in operating rooms require additional accessories. The aim of this study was to investigate the compatibility of smartphone applications in augmented reality (AR)-based craniotomy planning, which can be available even in disadvantaged workplaces with insufficient facilities.
Thirty patients diagnosed with supratentorial glial tumor and who underwent operations between January 2022 and March 2023 were included in the study. The entire stages of the surgical procedures and the surgical plans were executed with neuronavigation systems. The patient CT scans were reconstructed using software and exported as a 3D figure to an AR-enhanced smartphone application. The evaluation of the application's success was based on the spatial relationship of the AR-based artificial craniotomy to the neuronavigation-based craniotomy, with each AR-based craniotomy scaled from 0 to 3.
In the comparison between neuronavigation-based and AR fusion-based craniotomies, 8 of 30 (26.6%) patients scored 0 and were considered failed, 6 (20%) scored 1 and were considered ineffective, 7 (23.3%) scored 2 and were considered acceptable, and 9 (30%) scored 3 and were considered favorable.
AR technology has great potential to be a revolutionary milestone of neurosurgical planning, training, and education in the near future. In the authors' opinion, with the necessary legal permissions, there is no obstacle to the integration of surgical technological systems with mobile technology devices such as smartphones and tablets that benefit from their low-budget requirements, wide-range availability, and built-in operating systems.
Cardioplegic arrest is one of the most common myocardial protection strategies. A wide variety of cardioplegic solutions are routinely being used. There is an ongoing discussion about the relative ...effectiveness of these solutions considering myocardial protection. This study aims to investigate the hypothesis that the use of histidine‐tryptophan‐ketoglutarate (HTK) cardioplegia leads to decreased ischemic damage on myocardium compared with the use of conventional crystalloid cardioplegia. The study population was 32 patients operated on at Başkent University, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery for congenital heart diseases. The first group of 16 patients received conventional crystalloid cardioplegia (KK group) which is a modification of St. Thomas' solution, while the second group of 16 patients received HTK solution (HTK group). The echocardiographic measurements and the laboratory values of the patients were taken as the clinical variables. Right ventricular biopsies were taken from every patient before and after cardioplegic arrest. These biopsies were histopathologically examined for apoptosis using caspase‐3 antigen and cell proliferation using Ki‐67 antigen. The statistical analysis revealed no significant difference between the two groups regarding the clinical variables, apoptotic indices and proliferation indices. The apoptotic indices in the postcardioplegic arrest biopsies positively correlated with aortic clamp time in the KK group but not in the HTK group. Liver function tests on postoperative day 1 positively correlated with aortic clamp time in both groups. On postoperative day 2, this correlation was sustained in the KK group and ceased in HTK group. The difference in the correlation of apoptotic indices and liver function tests between the groups is accepted as a supportive finding for HTK solution. However, it can be postulated that when the aortic clamp times are similar to those in the present study, the clinical manifestation of the difference between the two solutions would not be significant.
There is no consensus on the optimal treatment of Tillaux-Chaput fractures. The results of our cases treated with mini-open surgery (open reduction and internal fixation) concerning efficacy and ...complications, we aim to compare other procedures (open, percutaneous, and arthroscopy-assisted) with the literature data and to look for an answer to the question of whether the primary treatment can be mini-open surgery.
Between the years 2014 and 2017, 22 of 30 patients with Tillaux-Chaput fractures were treated using mini-open surgery, open reduction and internal fixation with one cannulated screw. These cases were retrospectively examined concerning age, sex, side, surgery duration, complications, and American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS). Functional results were statistically evaluated 12 months after the injury. Follow-up included a clinical examination, imaging and AOFAS.
Of the patients, 14 were male (63.6%) and eight were female (36.4%). The mean age of the patients was 13.8 years. The mean surgery duration was 21 minutes. All fractures healed after an average of 14 weeks. No complications were observed in any of the cases. The mean follow-up time was 24.7 months. The mean preoperative AOFAS score was 53.3 and the mean postoperative AOFAS score was 93.6, which was a statistically significant difference. At the last follow-up, the AOFAS score was perfect for all cases.
Contrary to what is stated in the literature, the mini-open surgical procedure has many advantages. The operation is very short and the risk of nerve injury is very low. This study showed that Tillaux-Chaput fractures could be safely and efficiently treated with mini-open surgery. We recommend mini-open surgery, complete anatomical reduction, and internal fixation for successful results.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological impact, effectiveness, and safety of two hemostatic agents, Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) and microporous polysaccharide hemospheres (MPH), ...in an experimental rabbit epistaxis model. Rabbits were randomly assigned, using a computerized random number generator, to the following three groups of six animals: group 1 (control, irrigated with saline); group 2 (ABS-treated); and group 3 (MPH-treated). In all groups, a standardized rabbit epistaxis model was used. Hemostasis time and extent of nasal bleeding were measured to compare the hemostatic effect of ABS and MPH among groups. Septums were removed for histopathological analysis, 7 days after the procedure. ABS reduced hemostasis time to 104.2 s and amount of bleeding to 20.5 mg. MPH reduced hemostasis time to 71.7 s and amount of bleeding to 11.5 mg. Mean bleeding time in wounds administered ABS and MPH was significantly shorter compared with wounds administered isotonic saline solution (
p
= 0.004). ABS and MPH application decreased bleeding significantly compared with the control group (
p
= 0.004). Bleeding time and amount in the MPH group was significantly reduced compared with the ABS group (
p
= 0.013 and
p
= 0.004, respectively). There was no significant difference in the histopathological evaluation results between the ABS, MPH, and control groups. Our data indicate that both ABS and MPH represent safe, effective, and fast-acting hemostatic agents in the management of epistaxis. MPH was more effective than ABS in terms of hemostasis time and amount of bleeding.
The objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the effect of
extract (HRE) on oropharyngeal mucositis induced in rats with methotrexate (MTX) through biochemical, gene expression, and ...histopathological examinations.
Experimental animals were divided into a healthy group (HG), a HRE+MTX (HREM) group, HRE group (HREG), and a control group that received MTX (MTXG). The HREM and HREG groups of rats was administered 50 mg/kg HRE, while the MTXG and HG groups were given an equal volume distilled water with gavage. Then, the HREM and MTXG rat groups were given oral MTX at a dose of 5 mg/kg 1 hour after HRE and distilled water was administered. This procedure was repeated for 1 month. At the end of this period, all of the animals were sacrificed with a high dose of anesthesia. Then, the amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH) were determined in the removed oropharyngeal tissues. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) gene expressions were measured, and all the tissues were studied histopathologically.
The amount of MDA was significantly increased in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (
<0.001). MTX significantly decreased the amount of tGSH in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (
<0.001). In this study, there were no visible ulcers in the animal group in which the levels of MDA, IL-1β, and TNF-α were high and the level of tGSH was low. However, histopathologic examination revealed mucin pools in wide areas due to ruptured oropharynx glands, and proliferated, dilated, and congested blood vessels and dilated ductal structures in some areas.
HRE protected oropharyngeal oxidative damage induced by MTX. As an inexpensive and natural product, HRE has important advantages in the prevention of oropharyngeal damage induced by MTX.
Objective: To evaluate the effect of duraplasty based on cerebellar tonsillar descent (CTD) grade in the surgical treatment of Chiari malformation type I (CM-I). Methods: Medical records and magnetic ...resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 82 patients with surgical correction of CM-I performed at the authors' clinic from 1998–2009 were reviewed. The preoperative CTD grading scale was obtained. Patients were divided two groups: duraplasty group (group 1) and nonduraplasty group (group 2). The preoperative and postoperative size of the syringomyelia cavity, Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) scores, recovery rate, and postoperative complications were determined. Results: There was 58 patients in group 1, who underwent combined foramen magnum decompression, C1 (and C2 if necessary) laminectomy, and duraplasty; the 24 patients in group 2 underwent posterior fossa decompression (PFD) alone with no dural opening performed. There were no statistically significant differences between preoperative and postoperative size of the syringomyelia cavity and JOA scores of duraplasty (group 1) and nonduraplasty (group 2) groups in CTD grades 1 and 2; in CTD grade 3, the decrease in syrinx cavity and clinical improvement were statistically better in group 1 compared with group 2 ( P < 0.05). Complications in group 1 were statistically significantly increased compared with group 2 ( P < 0.05). Conclusions: This study shows that PFD and duraplasty for the treatment of CTD grade 3 Chiari malformation may lead to a more reliable reduction in the volume of concomitant syringomyelia and JOA scores. In CTD grade 1 and 2 patients, PFD without duraplasty may be performed.
