Leading state-of-the-art research facilities at the Universities of Edinburgh (UoE), Bristol (UoB), Lancaster (UoLan), King's College London (KCL) and Digital Catapult (DCAT) are interconnected ...through a dedicated JISC/JANET network infrastructure. Using Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) technologies, these distributed test-beds are integrated using a multi-domain NFV Orchestrator. This paper introduces a novel specialist distributed test-bed developed for facilitating the increasingly large and complex experimentation of future Internet system architectures, technologies, services and applications between the geographically dispersed laboratories across the UK. The aim is to enable students, researchers and enterprises to interconnect with and carry out remote experiments using these test-beds. Each one contributes a range of key capabilities for Internet research including optical networks, optical wireless and radio frequency communications, Internet of Things (IoT), SDN, NFV, as well as cloud computing technologies and services.
Dynamic and flexible optical networking combined with virtualization and softwarisation enabled by network function virtualization (NFV) and software defined networking (SDN) are the key technology ...enablers for supporting the dynamicity, bandwidth, and latency requirements of emerging 5G network services. To achieve the end-to-end connectivity objective of 5G, network services (NSes) must be often deployed transparently over multiple administrative and technological domains. Such scenario often presents security risks since a typical NS 11 Network service is a combination of multiple virtual and physical network functions created to realise a desired network functionality. may comprise a chain of network functions, each executed in different remote locations, and tampering within the network infrastructure may compromise their communication. To avoid such threats, quantum key distribution (QKD) has been identified and proposed as a future-proof method immune to any algorithmic cryptanalysis based on fundamental quantum-physics mechanisms to distribute symmetric keys. The maturity of QKD has enabled the research and development of quantum networks with gradual coexistence with classical optical networks using carrier-grade telecom equipment. This makes the QKD technology a suitable candidate for security of distributed and virtualised network services. In this article, for the first time, we propose a dynamic quantum-secured optical network for supporting network services that are dynamically created by chaining virtual network functions (VNFs) 22 Hardware network functions when implemented in software and deployed as VMs or containers are called VNFs. over multiple network domains. Moreover, quantum secured chaining of VNFs in 5G networks is experimentally demonstrated via interconnecting four autonomous 5G islands simultaneously through the q-ROADM with eight optical channels using the 5GUK Exchange orchestration platform. The experimental scenarios and results confirm the benefit of the proposed data plane architecture and control/management plane framework.
Currently, telecommunication research communities are striving towards the adoption of Zero-touch network and Service Management (ZSM) in Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) orchestration. ...Contemporary efforts on adopting Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) have caused an upsurge of ZSM application in the VNF space. While ML and AI complement the ZSM goals for building the intelligent NFV orchestration, a deep knowledge about the resource consumption by Network Services (NSs) and its constituent Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) is required, which would enable AI and ML models to manage the available resources better and enhance user experience. In this article, we propose a Novel Autonomous Profiling ( NAP ) method that not only predicts the optimum network load a VNF can support but also estimates the required resources in terms of CPU, Memory, and Network, to meet the performance targets and workload by utilising ML techniques. Our performance evaluation results on real datasets show that the output of NAP can be used in the next generation of NFV orchestration.
5G networks envisage to support a range of vertical industries, circumventing any potential barriers from converging various network technologies and administrative domains. Current solutions focus ...only on provisioning services within single administrative domains. There is also lack of standards for sustainable end-to-end multi-domain solutions that can use existing Network Function Virtualization (NFV) Management and Orchestration (MANO) systems. This is important to enable operators to collaborate and create innovative end-to-end services in a sustainable environment, where stakeholders can benefit without compromises. In this article, we present the 5GUK Exchange (5GUKEx), a novel hierarchical architecture to enable end-to-end orchestration with minimum overhead in complexity and performance while also allowing operators to maintain full control of their infrastructure. 5GUKEx allows operators to use their existing MANO systems for the single domain orchestration and build a multi-domain API based on standardized models exposed by service catalogues to coordinate the end-to-end service orchestration and interconnection. We built a prototype of the 5GUKEx and evaluated its performance through emulations showing that the 5GUKEx introduces minimum overhead. We also discuss the use-cases and trials using 5GUKEx in addition to the experiments focusing on the flexible nature of architecture, allowing us to use 5GUKEx to provide connectivity among multi domains over optical transport network.
Metropolitan networks are undergoing a major technological breakthrough leveraging the capabilities of software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). NFV permits the ...deployment of virtualized network functions (VNFs) on commodity hardware appliances which can be combined with SDN flexibility and programmability of the network infrastructure. SDN/NFV-enabled networks require decision-making in two time scales: short-term online resource allocation and mid-to-long term offline planning . In this paper, we first tackle the dimensioning of SDN/NFV-enabled metropolitan networks paying special attention to the role that latency plays in the capacity planning. We focus on a specific use-case: the metropolitan network that covers the Murcia - Alicante Spanish regions. Then, we propose a latency-aware multilayer service-chain allocation (LA-ML-SCA) algorithm to explore a range of maximum latency requirements and their impact on the resources for dimensioning the metropolitan network. We observe that design costs increase for low latency requirements as more data center facilities need to be spread to get closer to the network edge, reducing the economies of scale on the IT infrastructure. Subsequently, we review our recent joint computation of multi-site VNF placement and multilayer resource allocation in the deployment of a network service in a metro network. Specifically, a set of subroutines contained in LA-ML-SCA are experimentally validated in a network optimization-as-a-service architecture that assists an Open-Source MANO instance, virtual infrastructure managers and WAN controllers in a metro network test-bed.
