To evaluate initial and midterm results of percutaneous treatment of peripheral aneurysms using covered stents.
Between June 1994 and December 1997 we used covered stents (EndoPro System or Passager) ...on 19 patients with peripheral aneurysms (7 iliac, 5 subclavian, 3 femoral, 3 popliteal, 1 carotid).
Successful aneurysm exclusion was achieved in 18 of 19 patients (95%). In the short term (<30 days), one patient died of puncture site hemorrhage complicated by myocardial infarction; two femoral stents were surgically removed because of leakage. At subsequent follow-up (mean 20 months) two further unrelated deaths occurred. At 1 year (intention-to-treat) the stent was patent in 13 of 19 patients (68%) and the aneurysm was excluded in 17 of 19 (89%).
Treatment of peripheral aneurysms with covered stents has a high rate of immediate procedural success. Continued exclusion of the aneurysms is achieved in a large proportion of patients but there is a relatively high rate of stent thrombosis.
Pollutant dynamics and bioavailability greatly differ in soil and aquatic systems. Therefore, specific approaches and models are needed to assess the impact of soil contamination to terrestrial ...ecosystems. Earthworms among other soil invertebrates have received more attention because of their ecological importance. They represent a dominant part of the soil biomass and are soil engineers regulating important soil processes, notably fertilization. The release in soils of pollutants known for their persistence and/or their toxicity is a concern. Exposure of terrestrial species to pollutants that may alter genomic function has become an increasing topic of research in the last decade. Indeed, genome disturbances due to genetic and epigenetic mechanisms may impair growth, as well as reproduction and population dynamics in the long term. Despite their importance in gene expres- sion, epigenetic mechanisms are not yet understood in soil invertebrates. Until now, pollutant-induced changes in genome expression in natural biota are still being studied through structural alteration of DNA. The first biomarker relating to genotoxicant exposure in earthworms from multi-contaminated soils reported is DNA adducts measurements. It has been replaced by DNA breakage measured by the Comet assay, now more commonly used. Functional genomic changes are now being explored owing to molecular "omic" technologies. Approaches, objectives and results are overviewed herein. The focus is on studies dealing with genotoxicity and populational effects established from environmentally-relevant experiments and in situ studies Current Zoology 60 (2): 255-272, 2014.
Popliteal-to-distal bypass is still the gold standard for limb salvage. However, some patients, especially elderly or diabetic patients, are not eligible for such treatment; and problems may arise, ...including poor healing of distal surgical wounds, delayed resumption of ambulation, and prolonged hospitalization. This prospective multicenter study carried out on an intent-to-treat basis includes 53 extremities in 48 patients presenting critical ischemia due to infrageniculate arterial lesions with no proximal lesions. Two populations were isolated: diabetic patients (56.6%) and elderly patients over 80 years (45%). In 82% of cases the arterial lesions were long, i.e., more than 1 cm. The limb salvage rate at 1 year was 81%. Postoperative mortality was 9%, and mortality at 1 year was 22.6%. These results show that cutting balloon angioplasty can be proposed as primary treatment in patients with critical ischemia due to popliteal and distal artery lesions.
► ISO 19152 Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) applications. ► A novel approach for comparing cadastral management systems based on LADM. ► LADM layouts of vertical divided co-ownership ...(condominium). ► A compare analysis of Quebec (Canada) and Alsace-Moselle (France) condominium.
This paper proposes an original approach for comparing cadastral management systems, more specifically, the conceptual modeling used to spatially represent vertical divided co-ownership (usually equivalent to the condominium). The comparison is based on the ISO 19152 Land Administration Domain Model (LADM) specification, an international standard recently adopted by ISO. The LADM comparison is applied between Quebec (Canada) and Alsace Moselle (France) condominium units. Specific attention is paid to the third geometric dimension of the spatial representation used in each jurisdiction. The study includes the creation of LADM layouts for condominium units in Quebec and Alsace Moselle and a comparative analysis. The paper discusses the advantages and limitations of using LADM layouts to undertake such comparisons and gives advices to produce similar analysis for others cadastral systems.
LADM schematization certainly made the comparison between Quebec and French condominium units easier, more concise and clearer. The formal description of common set of concepts and terms such as proposed by LADM allows us to quantify the similarities and differences, and potentially move towards the “automatic” creation of a matching file between both systems. One of the main advantages is the graphical views resulting from the schematization process that permit visual comparison where both systems can now be compared side by side, class by class, attribute by attribute. The use of the LADM specification is, however, not evident and requires quite a few skills in data modeling. The LADM documentation is somewhat technical and lacking in official definition. It required time to comprehend the documentation, and some LADM classes, attributes or relationships are ambiguous and still difficult to match with both systems.
Purpose: Osteochondromas are the most common benign tumor of the bone. They are sometimes responsible for vascular complications involving either veins or arteries, principally around the knee.
...Methods: We report six cases of such complications. An extensive review of literature through a computerized research was performed.
Results: We found 97 cases that were previously reported in the English literature giving sufficient details and providing data on 103 cases for analysis.
Conclusion: Surgical treatment of vascular complications of osteochondromas is recommended as an urgent procedure to avoid irreversible damages, such as arterial occlusion, embolism, or phlebitis. Prophylactic resection of osteochondromas in the vicinity of a vessel must be performed.
Glycosyltransferases (GTs) constitute a very large multi-gene superfamily, containing several thousand members identified in sequenced organisms especially in plants. GTs are key enzymes involved in ...various biological processes such as cell wall formation, storage polysaccharides biosynthesis, and glycosylation of various metabolites. GTs have been identified in rice (Oryza sativa) and Arabidopsis thaliana, but their precise function has been demonstrated biochemically for only a few. In this work we have established a repertoire of virtually all the wheat (Triticum aestivum) GT sequences, using the large publicly available banks of expressed sequences. Based on sequence similarity with Arabidopsis and rice GTs compiled in the carbohydrate active enzyme database (CAZY), we have identified and classified these wheat sequences. The results were used to feed a searchable database available on the web (http://wwwappli.nantes.inra.fr:8180/GTIDB) that can be used for initiating an exhaustive candidate gene survey in wheat applied to a particular biological process. This is illustrated through the identification of GT families which are expressed during cell wall formation in wheat grain maturation.
