We have demonstrated a highly ordered porous carbon (HOPC) as an effective electromagnetic absorber. The unique porous structures allow HOPC to possess high surface area and establish effective ...three-dimensional (3D) conductive interconnections at very low filler loading, which is responsible for effective electrical loss in terms of dissipating the induced current in the corresponding wax composites. Owing to the 3D porous frame, the wax composites with 1 and 5wt% HOPC have shown effective bandwidth ∼2 and ∼4.5GHz, respectively, which is considerably competitive to the performance found in the carbon nanotube- (CNT) and graphene-based composites of much higher filler loadings. This concept based on porous absorbers demonstrates more advantages in the fabrication of lightweight microwave-absorbing materials. Furthermore, the composite with 20wt% HOPC has exhibited highly effective electromagnetic shielding performance up to 50dB, which competes well with what has already been achieved in the composites embedded with CNTs and graphene. The fundamental mechanism based on electrical conductivity and complex impedance suggests specific strategies in the achievement of high-performance composites for electromagnetic attenuation and shielding.
As volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a major group of air pollutants, development of materials for efficient adsorption and removal of VOCs is of great significance in both environmental and ...analytical sciences. Here we report metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 for the effective adsorption of VOCs at atmospheric pressure. A simple device was designed for quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and six VOCs with various functional groups and polarities, i.e., n-hexane, toluene, methanol, butanone, dichloromethane, and n-butylamine, were chosen as targets to probe the adsorption properties of MIL-101. The developed device allows measurement of the adsorption isotherms and monitoring of the dynamic process for the adsorption of VOCs on MOFs, and also provides a useful tool for characterization of MOFs. The adsorption isotherms of the VOCs on MIL-101 followed the Dubinin-Astakhov equation with the characteristic energy from 5.70 (methanol) to 9.13 kJ mol(-1) (n-butylamine), Astakhov exponent from 0.50 (n-butylamine) to 3.03 (n-hexane), and the limiting adsorption capacity from 0.08 (n-hexane) to 12.8 (n-butylamine) mmol g(-1). MIL-101 exhibited the strongest affinity to n-butylamine, but the weakest affinity to n-hexane. The determined Astakhov exponents and the isosteric heats of adsorption revealed the energetic heterogeneity of MIL-101. MIL-101 showed the most energetically homogeneous for n-hexane, but the most energetically heterogeneous for n-butylamine. The dynamic process of adsorption monitored by the QCM system demonstrated the distribution of the sorption sites within MIL-101. The metal sites within the MIL-101 were vital in adsorption process. MIL-101 gave much higher affinity and bigger adsorption capacity to VOCs than activated carbon, offering great potential for real applications in the adsorption and removal of VOCs.
Multilayer graphene/polymer composite films with good mechanical flexibility were fabricated into paraffin-based sandwich structures to evaluate electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. ...Experimental results showed the relationship between electrical properties and shielding performance, demonstrating that electrical properties are significant factors in EMI shielding. Calculation based on electrical conductivity of the composite films was carried out to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of absorption, reflection and multiple-reflections for the polymeric graphene composite films. Both experimental and calculated results indicate that reflection is the dominating shielding mechanism for the as-fabricated polymeric graphene films. The optimization of thickness, skin depth and electrical conductivity in the shielding materials could be highly significant in achieving enhanced EMI shielding. Further improvement in absorption shielding has been achieved by increasing the shielding thickness in order to enhance the overall shielding performance. The optimized shielding effectiveness up to 27dB suggested effective shielding of the composite films. The implication of the mechanisms for optimizing shielding performance demonstrates significant fundamental basis for designing high-performance EMI shielding composites. The results and techniques also promise a simple and effective approach to achieve light-weight graphene-based composite films for application potentials in EMI shielding coatings.
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar organic solvent that is used to dissolve neuroprotective or neurotoxic agents in neuroscience research. However, DMSO itself also has pharmacological and ...pathological effects on the nervous system. Astrocytes play a central role in maintaining brain homeostasis, but the effect and mechanism of DMSO on astrocytes has not been studied. The present study showed that exposure of astrocyte cultures to 1% DMSO for 24 h did not significantly affect cell survival, but decreased cell viability and glial glutamate transporter expression, and caused mitochondrial swelling, membrane potential impairment and reactive oxygen species production, and subsequent cytochrome c release and caspase-3 activation. DMSO at concentrations of 5% significantly inhibited cell variability and promoted apoptosis of astrocytes, accompanied with more severe mitochondrial damage. These results suggest that mitochondrial impairment is a primary event in DMSO-induced astrocyte toxicity. The potential cytotoxic effects on astrocytes need to be carefully considered during investigating neuroprotective or neurotoxic effects of hydrophobic agents dissolved by DMSO.
Elevated liver enzyme levels are observed in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); however, these features have not been characterized.
Hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in Zhejiang ...Province, China, from January 17 to February 12, 2020, were enrolled. Liver enzyme level elevation was defined as alanine aminotransferase level >35 U/L for men and 25 U/L for women at admission. Patients with normal alanine aminotransferase levels were included in the control group. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to confirm severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, and patients symptomatic with SARS-CoV-2 infection were defined as patients with COVID-19. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, treatment, and outcome data were collected and compared.
Of 788 patients with COVID-19, 222 (28.2%) patients had elevated liver enzyme levels (median interquartile range {IQR} age, 47.0 35.0-55.0 years; 40.5% women). Being male, overweight, and smoking increased the risk of liver enzyme level elevation. The liver enzyme level elevation group had lesser pharyngalgia and more diarrhea than the control group. The median time from illness onset to admission was 3 days for liver enzyme level elevation groups (IQR, 2-6), whereas the median hospitalization time for 86 (38.7%) discharged patients was 13 days (IQR, 11-16). No differences in disease severity and clinical outcomes were noted between the groups.
We found that 28.2% of patients with COVID-19 presented with elevated liver enzyme levels on admission, which could partially be related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Male patients had a higher risk of liver enzyme level elevation. With early medical intervention, liver enzyme level elevation did not worsen the outcomes of patients with COVID-19.
The SARS-CoV-2-infected disease (COVID-19) outbreak is a major threat to human beings. Previous studies mainly focused on Wuhan and typical symptoms. We analysed 74 confirmed COVID-19 cases with GI ...symptoms in the Zhejiang province to determine epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics.
COVID-19 hospital patients were admitted in the Zhejiang province from 17 January 2020 to 8 February 2020. Epidemiological, demographic, clinical, laboratory, management and outcome data of patients with GI symptoms were analysed using multivariate analysis for risk of severe/critical type. Bioinformatics were used to analyse features of SARS-CoV-2 from Zhejiang province.
Among enrolled 651 patients, 74 (11.4%) presented with at least one GI symptom (nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea), average age of 46.14 years, 4-day incubation period and 10.8% had pre-existing liver disease. Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 17 (22.97%) and 23 (31.08%) had severe/critical types and family clustering, respectively, significantly higher than those without GI symptoms, 47 (8.14%) and 118 (20.45%). Of patients with COVID-19 with GI symptoms, 29 (39.19%), 23 (31.08%), 8 (10.81%) and 16 (21.62%) had significantly higher rates of fever >38.5°C, fatigue, shortness of breath and headache, respectively. Low-dose glucocorticoids and antibiotics were administered to 14.86% and 41.89% of patients, respectively. ...The objective of this study is to identify key differences between thrombotic APS (tAPS) and obstetric APS (oAPS).
This single-center, prospective study included consecutive patients with primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) receiving treatment at the Peking Union Medical College Hospital during a period from 2013 to 2020.
Screening of the database yielded a total of 244 women with positive antiphospholipid antibody (aPL). Among the 105 women with primary APS, 39 (37.14%) had isolated tAPS (ItAPS), 44 (41.90%) had isolated oAPS (IoAPS), and 9 (8.57%) had both tAPS and tAPS+oAPS. In comparison to those with IoAPS, patients with ItAPS had older age (41.92 ± 11.97 vs. 33.16 ± 4.22 years, P < 0.01), higher rate of cardiovascular risk (at least one positive of coronary heart disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia) (41.03% vs. 6.82%, P < 0.01), and higher frequency of thrombocytopenia (43.59% vs. 20.45%, P < 0.05). Antibody profiles were generally similar among the groups, but isolated anti-β2GPI positivity was more common in patients with IoAPS (52.27% vs. 17.94% for ItAPS, P = 0.01). Triple aPL positivity was more common in patients with both tAPS and oAPS (66.67% vs. 46.15% for ItAPS vs. 25% for IoAPS, P = 0.022). Blood homocysteine was higher in patients with ItAPS (11.20 vs. 9.90 μmol/L for IoAPS, P < 0.05), but there were no differences in inflammatory markers or complements. Recurrence rate of thrombosis was higher in patients with ItAPS (33.33% vs. 2.27% for IoAPS, P ≤ 0.001) with a mean follow-up of 61 months.
Despite generally similar antibody and biochemical profiles, patients with ItAPS had much higher risk of recurrent thrombosis than IoAPS, supporting distinct mechanisms of pathogenesis.
For extending graphene aerogels for broad applications, here we demonstrate a simple and universal approach for scalable fabricating novel dual carbon three-dimensional (3D) hybrid structures, where ...the interspace of a 3D carbon texture has been modified by in situ generating graphene aerogels. Owing to the unique exceptional 3D carbon bi-frameworks of enhanced electrical conductivity and flexibility, the as-prepared graphene aerogel–carbon texture hybrid presents an ultra-light feature (0.07gcm−3 in density), with highly effective electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance up to 27dB and 37dB (in the X band region) at thicknesses of 2 and 3mm, respectively. According to the mechanisms in EMI shielding, the fundamental criteria for evaluating a shielding material has been discussed and the excellent shielding performance coupled with the ultra-low density allows such 3D all-carbon hybrids to show more advantageous than the other carbon-based shielding composites. Implication of the results suggests that the strategy of various advantages could be widely extended to a variety of applications, promising a great platform for large-scale fabricating porous graphene-based materials into high-performance products.
To examine the effectiveness and safety of yoga of women with sleep problems by performing a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Medline/PubMed, ClinicalKey, ScienceDirect, Embase, PsycINFO, and the ...Cochrane Library were searched throughout the month of June, 2019. Randomized controlled trials comparing yoga groups with control groups in women with sleep problems were included. Two reviewers independently evaluated risk of bias by using the risk of bias tool suggested by the Cochrane Collaboration for programming and conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. The main outcome measure was sleep quality or the severity of insomnia, which was measured using subjective instruments, such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), or objective instruments such as polysomnography, actigraphy, and safety of the intervention. For each outcome, a standardized mean difference (SMD) and confidence intervals (CIs) of 95% were determined.
Nineteen studies in this systematic review included 1832 participants. The meta-analysis of the combined data conducted according to Comprehensive Meta-Analysis showed a significant improvement in sleep (SMD = - 0.327, 95% CI = - 0.506 to - 0.148, P < 0.001). Meta-analyses revealed positive effects of yoga using PSQI scores in 16 randomized control trials (RCTs), compared with the control group in improving sleep quality among women using PSQI (SMD = - 0.54; 95% CI = - 0.89 to - 0.19; P = 0.003). However, three RCTs revealed no effects of yoga compared to the control group in reducing insomnia among women using ISI (SMD = - 0.13; 95% CI = - 0.74 to 0.48; P = 0.69). Seven RCTs revealed no evidence for effects of yoga compared with the control group in improving sleep quality for women with breast cancer using PSQI (SMD = - 0.15; 95% CI = - 0.31 to 0.01; P = 0.5). Four RCTs revealed no evidence for the effects of yoga compared with the control group in improving the sleep quality for peri/postmenopausal women using PSQI (SMD = - 0.31; 95% CI = - 0.95 to 0.33; P = 0.34). Yoga was not associated with any serious adverse events.
This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrated that yoga intervention in women can be beneficial when compared to non-active control conditions in term of managing sleep problems. The moderator analyses suggest that participants in the non-breast cancer subgroup and participants in the non-peri/postmenopausal subgroup were associated with greater benefits, with a direct correlation of total class time with quality of sleep among other related benefits.
Summary Background Pretreatment with topical imiquimod, a synthetic agonist of toll-like receptor 7, significantly improved the immunogenicity of influenza vaccination in elderly people. We aimed to ...clarify its effect in a younger age group. Methods In this double-blind, randomised controlled trial, we enrolled healthy volunteers aged 18–30 years in early 2014 to receive the 2013–14 northern-hemisphere winter trivalent influenza vaccine at the Queen Mary Hospital, (Hong Kong, China). Eligible participants were randomly assigned (1:1:1:1) to one of the four vaccination groups: the study group, topical imiquimod-cream followed by intradermal trivalent influenza vaccine (INF-Q-ID), or one of three control groups, topical aqueous-cream control followed by intradermal trivalent influenza vaccine (INF-C-ID), topical aqueous-cream control followed by intramuscular trivalent influenza vaccine (INF-C-IM), and topical imiquimod-cream followed by intradermal normal-saline injection (SAL-Q-ID). Randomisation was by computer-generated lists in blocks of four. The type of topical treatment was masked from volunteers and investigators, although not from the study nurse. Serum haemagglutination-inhibition and microneutralisation-antibody titres were assayed. The primary outcome was seroconversion at day 7 after treatment for three vaccine strains of influenza (A/California/07/2009 H1N1-like virus A/California/H1N1, A/Victoria/361/2011 H3N2-like virus A/Victoria/H3N2, and B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like virus B/Yamagata lineage) and four non-vaccine strains (A/HK/485197/14 H3N2 Switzerland-like lineage, prototype A/WSN/1933 H1N1, A/HK/408027/09 prepandemic seasonal H1N1, and B/HK/418078/11 Victoria lineage). Analysis was done on an intention-to-treat basis. This trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov , number NCT02103023. Findings We enrolled 160 healthy volunteers between March 1 and May 31, 2014, and 40 participants were randomly assigned to each study group. For the A/California/H1N1 strain, seroconversion at day 7 occurred in 39 participants (98%) in the INF-Q-ID group, 25 (63%) in the INF-C-ID group, 18 (45%) in the INF-C-IM group, and none in the SAL-Q-ID group; for the A/Victoria/H3N2, this was 30 (75%) in the INF-Q-ID group, four (10%) in the INF-C-ID group, four (10%) in the INF-C-IM group, and none in the SAL-Q-ID group; and for the B/Massachusetts (Yamagata lineage) strain, this was 36 (90%) in the INF-Q-ID group, 27 (68%) in the INF-C-ID group, 17 (43%) in the INF-C-IM group, and one (3%) in the SAL-Q-ID group (p<0·0001 for all three vaccine strains). Adverse reactions were infrequent and self-limited and did not differ between the four groups. Furthermore, the seroconversion rate against the four non-vaccine strains was better in the INF-Q-ID group than in the control groups on days 7 and 21 (p<0·0001). The most common adverse events were grade 1 redness (five participants in the INF-Q-ID group, three in INF-C-ID, one in INF-C-IM, and one in SAL-Q-ID) and grade 1 swelling (seven participants in INF-Q-ID group, five in INF-C-ID, three in INF-C-IM, and two in SAL-Q-ID. Interpretation Topical application of imiquimod before intradermal trivalent influenza vaccine significantly improved immunogenicity against the vaccine influenza strains in young healthy individuals and increased immunogenicity against the non-vaccine strains, especially the antigenically drifted H3N2 strain of 2015, which was not included in the 2013–14 recommended vaccine. Further studies should be done to establish the efficacy and safety of this approach for other injectable vaccines to augment the onset and range of protection.
