Plagiarism, a concept of intellectual property in academic writing, has gained importance during the past few years in Indonesian higher education system. The vague definition and understanding of ...plagiarism have seemed to induce inconsistent efforts in preventing plagiarism practices in the local tertiary institutions (Akbar and Picard, 2019). This study aims to introduce and describe the step-by-step process in developing an assessment instrument that can measure a university lecturer’s understanding of plagiarism concept. A Rasch’s partial credit model was used in the data analysis to explain the different levels of the hypothesized understanding of plagiarism construct. Not only that the findings can help ones to learn the necessary steps to develop the instrument that upholds standards of reliability and validity, they can also provide good insights for the university authority to set an appropriate training for the lecturers on plagiarism prevention and mitigation as the different levels of these lecturers’ understanding of plagiarism are unpacked and addressed.
This study sought to find out the result of implementing Flipped Learning in pre-university English class in one of private universities in Indonesia. The study answers the question on to what extend ...the flipped learning work or fail when being implemented in the respective class. The data which were the result of pre-test and post-test were collected using quantitative method. To analyse the data, a non-parametric approach was used to analyse the impact of the FL approach on student performance in the EPS program. The difference between the pre- and test- scores was calculated and used in a hypothesis testing method using the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon Test. The result indicated that there is no significance difference between the treatment group and the control group. Some possible reasons why the insignificance happen are presented as well as some recommendations towards future studies in FL context.
The Indonesian government has been struggling to improve the quality of teachers in its public and private schools. Several programmes of teacher education and teacher certification have been ...designed to enhance teacher quality. However, the programmes do not yet develop effective teachers. Supporting the government programmes, the Tanoto Foundation has facilitated teacher professional development programme since 2010, specifically in elementary schools in the provinces of Riau, Jambi, and North Sumatra. This paper first describes how the Tanoto Foundation has designed and implemented its teacher quality improvement programme for in-service teachers in remote schools in Indonesia and then uses this context to examine to what extent teachers benefited from these programmes. Reported findings broaden our understanding of how teachers can improve their quality via privately sponsored programmes.
Interpretations for licensure tests involve a series of inferences or a validity argument, leading from the test score to decisions about who is accepted or denied entry into a profession. Utilizing ...an argument-based framework for validation based on the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing, we explore the evidence for the ongoing use of the Performance Assessment for California Teachers (PACT) for Tier I licensure decisions. The evidence for a unidimensional and a multidimensional structure based on the instrument’s content are examined with an item response model. Examining operational data (n = 1,711) from seven California teacher education institutions, we found sufficient internal structure validity evidence to support the continued, but limited, use of this instrument for its intended summative purpose. Evidence for a three-dimensional structure of model fit better explains overall teacher candidate performance on the PACT instrument as it is currently designed.
Consisting of three chapters, this dissertation investigates the possibilities for using data from a large-scale international test (specifically the PISA 2012 test in mathematics) for designing ...effective policies in education, specifically for developing countries, like Indonesia. The first chapter investigated the internal structure of the PISA 2012 math test and examined how the outcomes were related to the high-stakes 9th grade national examination in mathematics by using common persons linking. In addition, the associations of selected student- and school-level background variables were examined to better explain the variability of student mathematics performance across four content areas included in the test. Next, the second chapter proposed a new model for measuring the students’ opportunity-to-learn (OTL) based on provided indicators of the mathematics classroom learning experience. The best-fit model was then chosen due to its strength in explaining the variability of student performance. Finally, the last chapter investigated selected student and school background information to provide insights on how they were associated with aspects of the proposed OTL measures before and after a school clustering effect was added. The data analyses were performed using a multidimensional partial credit model with latent regression based on the Indonesian data. The findings revealed that both the mathematics test and the OTL measures were multidimensional. No correlation was found between the 9 th graders’ performance in PISA and in the national examination in mathematics. Amongst the selected background variables, SES and grade levels showed stronger associations with the student performance and the OTL level across their sub-domains or aspects, respectively. Students with higher SES were found to attend public schools that offered better OTL. Incorporating the school clustering effect, it was shown that the students’ OTL varied relatively more between schools, rather than within schools. In conclusion, this dissertation provides useful information on how the Indonesian students performed in the assessment framework laid out by PISA mathematics and how they perceived their classroom learning experience as indicators of their OTL. This information can be used to leverage and target evidence-based policy decisions to improve the quality of the national education system.
The decision to include AL teaching proficiency on the PACT followed from a combination of important considerations, including the need to provide a rich education to the diverse California student ...population, as we discuss further in the following "Background" section. ...to our knowledge, the only other widely used evaluation of teachers that assesses their proficiency of incorporating and/or developing students' AL levels in the classroom is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards's (NBPTS) Teaching English-as-a-New-Language portfolios for Early and Middle Childhood and Early Adolescence Through Young Adulthood (NBPTS, 2013b, 2014). ...we could not find any research documenting the reliability or validity of the AL rubrics for these English-as-a-New-Language portfolios.\n Preservice teacher evaluation systems in California, such as the edTPA and PACT, must be designed to detect whether teacher candidates possess the skills, knowledge, and dispositions toward practice to help their K-12 students master challenging content.
