In a postcolonial country, colonial cartoons prove an indispensable source for voicing contemporary public opinion either for initiating resistance towards colonizer's leadership or for suppressing ...the colonized who dared to launch resistance in the first place. Simultaneously, humour generated through these cartoons is valuable in identifying the iconicity of an individual as the extent of distortion employed in caricaturing them explains the level of popularity enjoyed by them. This implies that a cartoon can effectively increase/decrease the number of followers of a person who is either glorified or belittled through distortions. In this article, I argue that colonial cartoons despite of their attempts to ridicule Mahatma Gandhi for his rivalry with the British administrators paradoxically went on to glorify him. Cartoons converted him into a popular icon, the one who was easily recognized by masses. Their intention of generating humour by depicting Gandhi in cartoons made people visualise enormous trouble that he was creating for colonizers thus turning him into a celebratory figure against British in South Africa. This moral shaming created from visual depiction of inhuman British rule led to withdrawal of many horrendous acts and laws which were primarily meant for exploitation of Indian immigrants in South Africa.
In this article, I look at the graphic adaptation of Phule's Gulamgiri (1873) (also known as Slavery) and argue how visuality offers a unique approach in the understanding of caste in contemporary ...Indian society. I explain how the genre, through its pictorial description, extends Gulamgiri's critique of Hinduism by including modern-day debates over caste discrimination. Some of the questions that I discuss in the article include: the necessity of adaptation of a nineteenth-century historical text through the medium of a very nascent contemporary Indian genre; why the issue of caste that has been exhaustively discussed and had stood strong throughout time is being revived by contemporary writers; how the narration in graphic novel form reconfigures (or resembles) the original text and, lastly, does the graphic novel help or hinder in conveying the holistic understanding of the problem of caste from Phule to present times.
•NGS uncovers genetic causes in congenital disorders, enabling targeted medical interventions.•NGS facilitates identification of drug-resistance, aiding in surveillance and targeted treatment ...strategies in variety of diseases especially Cancer and rare diseases.•Improved disease specific host and pathogen sequencing for public health surveillance monitoring with NGS would lead the future for molecular-guided treatments.•NGS clubbed with other omics, AI-driven analysis, would enhance genome exploration and analysis for non-invasive monitoring in precision medicine.
Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has revolutionized the field of genomics and is rapidly transforming clinical diagnosis and precision medicine. This advanced sequencing technology enables the rapid and cost-effective analysis of large-scale genomic data, allowing comprehensive exploration of the genetic landscape of diseases. In clinical diagnosis, NGS has proven to be a powerful tool for identifying disease-causing variants, enabling accurate and early detection of genetic disorders. Additionally, NGS facilitates the identification of novel disease-associated genes and variants, aiding in the development of targeted therapies and personalized treatment strategies. NGS greatly benefits precision medicine by enhancing our understanding of disease mechanisms and enabling the identification of specific molecular markers for disease subtypes, thus enabling tailored medical interventions based on individual characteristics. Furthermore, NGS contributes to the development of non-invasive diagnostic approaches, such as liquid biopsies, which can monitor disease progression and treatment response. The potential of NGS in clinical diagnosis and precision medicine is vast, yet challenges persist in data analysis, interpretation, and protocol standardization. This review highlights NGS applications in disease diagnosis, prognosis, and personalized treatment strategies, while also addressing challenges and future prospects in fully harnessing genomic potential within clinical practice.
Abstract Plexiform neurofibroma is a rare, poorly defined benign tumor of the peripheral nerve sheath. It spreads out just under the skin, or deeper in the body, and occurs exclusively in patients ...with neurofibromatosis type I. Facial plexiform neurofibroma may produce various degrees of cosmetic and functional deformities in the head and neck region. It is a virtually pathognomonic and often disabling feature of neurofibromatosis type I. We present a case of plexiform neurofibroma in an 18-year-old female.
Energy is the one of the basic requirements for sustained economic growth. To meet the growing requirement of energy, and to reduce the CO2 emission, many countries have chosen to meet its energy ...demand through renewable energy resources for sustainable development. Most popular renewable energy resources are solar and wind; due to the technological advancement in solar technology and its demand in the market made solar panels comparatively cheaper. One of the popular ways to extract solar power is installing solar rooftop. The main factor, which affects the performance of solar rooftop PV system, is power mismatch due to shading. In the literature, many reconfiguration methods have proposed based on electrical interconnections and physical location of the solar cell/modules. In this paper, physical-location based techniques are modified as electrical interconnection techniques and its performance is compared through experimentation at various shading patterns.
In recent days, the power system is incorporated with Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices for compensation of reactive power to maintain the stability of the system. The stability of the ...system is highly dependent on the state variables which are the outcomes of a state estimator in the power system. To improve the efficiency of a state estimator, high precision measuring devices such as Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are installed in the power system. Hence a state estimator embedded with these compensatory devices and PMUs is necessary for estimation of state variables. The present work has been carried out in three steps. Step 1: Considering the cost of PMUs and the availability of the communication network in the particular location, PMUs are optimally placed in the nodes of the system so that all critical measurements are transmuted into redundant ones using differential evolution (DE) algorithm to perform observability analysis. Step 2: A hybrid state estimation is performed by including the mathematical model of FACTS devices and PMUs. Step 3: It is shown that by installing optimal number of PMUs at desired location, multiple bad data detection and identification capability of residual method is considerably improved. Lastly, numerical simulation with standard IEEE 14 bus system, IEEE 118 bus system and a practical 246 bus system of northern region power grid (NRPG) is presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach in assessing the estimation of the system state variables.

Underwater target detection, object classification, and image segmentation play an important role in ocean exploration and marine life studies for which the improvement of relevant technology is of ...much practical significance. Although existing target detection, image classification, and segmentation algorithms have achieved excellent performance on land they often fail to achieve satisfactory outcomes of detection and classification when in the underwater environment. In this paper, one of the most advanced target detection algorithms, YOLO v8 (You Only Look Once), was first applied in the underwater environment before being improved by combining it with some
methods characteristic of the underwater environment. The state-of-the-art backbone and neck architectures and TC-YOLO/SAM were treated as the basic backbone network of YOLO v8, which makes the network suitable for underwater images.
Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a common disease affecting 10% of the population. Although the routine diagnosis and treatment of diabetes are quite familiar, it occasionally presents with some unusual ...manifestations. We report two non-ketotic hyperglycemic diabetic patients whose brain CT scan pictures showed non-enhancing hyperdensities in the basal ganglia.
