The regulatory agency responsible for prudential supervision of the banks in China, the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), is not an independent authority. The agency's regulatory actions ...are constrained by the central government, which has to balance the prudential and non-prudential consequences of bank regulation for its political survival. The conditions and limits of the government's influence on the CBRC is analysed through an investigation of three regulatory cases. The conclusion is that the CBRC's regulatory actions are determined by the relative importance of prudential outcomes for the government's policy objectives.
Air pollution is considered one of the biggest threats for the ecological system and human existence. Therefore, air quality monitoring has become a necessity in urban and industrial areas. Recently, ...the emergence of Machine Learning techniques justifies the application of statistical approaches for environmental modeling, especially in air quality forecasting. In this context, we propose a novel feature ranking method, termed as Ensemble of Regressor Chains-guided Feature Ranking (ERCFR) to forecast multiple air pollutants simultaneously over two cities. This approach is based on a combination of one of the most powerful ensemble methods for Multi-Target Regression problems (Ensemble of Regressor Chains) and the Random Forest permutation importance measure. Thus, feature selection allowed the model to obtain the best results with a restricted subset of features. The experimental results reveal the superiority of the proposed approach compared to other state-of-the-art methods, although some cautions have to be considered to improve the runtime performance and to decrease its sensitivity over extreme and outlier values.

Global concerns have arisen due to pollution-related mortality, and scholars studying the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) have explored the impact of economic growth on carbon emissions, yielding ...conflicting findings. Considering these opposing perspectives on whether wealth exacerbates or mitigates the negative consequences of environmental pollution, we aim to assess the influence of economic growth on pollution-related mortality and investigate whether national culture moderates its impact. To gain insights into the effects of economic growth on pollution-related mortality, we utilized panel data covering 170 countries over a span of 23 years (1996–2017). Initially, we examined the relationship between GDP per capita and pollution-related mortality, finding support for the theory of a curvilinear correlation but not for the concept of a bell-shaped curve. Upon introducing cultural moderators, the curve shifts in different directions along various dimensions. High power distance and masculinity cultures are associated with increased pollution-related mortality, whereas individualist and long-term orientation cultures are linked to reduced pollution-related mortality. The directions of these moderators align with both linear and nonlinear analyses, except for uncertainty avoidance. This study makes significant contributions to the critical issue of pollution-related mortality, extending beyond traditional sustainability analyses. Additionally, it provides a robust examination of the intertwining of economic wealth and culture, challenging the dominance of either type of logic. Lastly, our study draws attention to policy-driven solutions.

We examined how the negotiator’s power, the explorative–exploitative purpose and cultural distance interact in the negotiation for an international business alliance formation. Our participant observation in some several events of negotiation suggests that the executive’s power plays an enabling role in the negotiation for alliance formation. However, cultural distance between the negotiating parties in the international business context hampers the success of the negotiation. In particular, person power supports the explorative alliance purpose. The explorative alliance embodies technical and behavioural uncertainty. On the other hand, position power supports the exploitative alliance purpose. The exploitative alliance purpose more aptly embodies behavioural uncertainty than technical uncertainty does.
Cultural distance has a high negative influence on person power and the explorative alliance, and person power and the explorative alliance indicate high uncertainty. In comparison, cultural distance has a negative influence on position power and exploitative alliance, and position power and exploitative alliances indicate low uncertainty. In other words, cultural distance matters more in the person–explorative combination than it does in the position–exploitative combination. The main assumption is that cultural distance has adverse effects on both power and tasks in the negotiation. However, the notions of power and purpose do not influence the effect of national cultural differences.
The purpose of this study was to determine the influences of supportive therapy (ST) on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of marbofloxacin in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)‐induced endotoxemic sheep. Furthermore, ...minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of marbofloxacin against Escherichia coli, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus was determined. The study was performed using a three‐period cross PK design following a 15‐day washout period. In the first period, marbofloxacin (10 mg/kg) was administered by an intravenous (IV) injection. In the second and third periods, marbofloxacin was co‐administered with ST (lactated ringer + 5% dextrose + 0.45% sodium chloride, IV, 20 ml/kg, dexamethasone 0.5 mg/kg, SC) and ST + LPS (E. coli O55:B5, 10 µg/kg), respectively. Plasma marbofloxacin concentration was measured using HPLC‐UV. Following IV administration of marbofloxacin alone, the t1/2λz, AUC0–∞, ClT, and Vdss were 2.87 hr, 34.73 hr × µg/ml, 0.29 L hr−1 kg−1, and 0.87 L/kg, respectively. While no change was found in the MBX + ST group in terms of the PK parameters of marbofloxacin, it was determined that the ClT of marbofloxacin decreased, AUC0–∞ increased, and t1/2λz and MRT prolonged in the MBX + ST + LPS group. MIC values of marbofloxacin were 0.031 to >16 µg/ml for E. coli, 0.016 to >16 µg/ml for M. haemolytica, 0.016–1 µg/ml for P. multocida, 0.016–0.25 µg/ml for K. pneumoniae, 0.031–0.063 µg/ml for Salmonella spp., and 0.031–1 µg/ml for S. aureus. The study results show the necessity to make a dose adjustment of marbofloxacin following concomitant administration of ST in endotoxemic sheep. Also, the PK and pharmacodynamic effect of marbofloxacin needs to be determined in naturally infected septicemic sheep following concomitant administration of single and ST.
IntroductionIn this study, we aimed to measure the change in total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant stress (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), and nuclear factor erythroid 2 (Nrf-2) levels ...during the treatment period in patients who restored spontaneous circulation return after cardiac arrest with targeted temperature management (TTM) therapy in our hospital.MethodsThe study included 36 patients who were hospitalized in the anesthesia intensive care unit and coronary intensive care unit of our hospital and were treated with TTM therapy after cardiac arrest. TAS, TOS, OSI, and Nrf-2 levels were measured at 0 (beginning), 12, 24, and 48 (end) hours of TTM therapy.ResultsThe mean age of the patients participating in the study was 54.25±17.10. TAS and TOS levels decreased gradually during TTM therapy, but statistically significant decrease was observed at the end of the hour. When Nrf-2 and OSI levels were evaluated, it was found that no statistically significant difference was observed during the TTM therapy.ConclusionIn our study, the oxidant-antioxidant balance was preserved in patients who received TTM therapy after cardiac arrest. We predict TTM therapy is effective on oxidative stress after cardiac arrest and should be applied for at least 48 hours.
Alzheimer disease (AD), a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorder, has a mainly unknown multifactorial etiology. Neuroinflammatory mechanisms might contribute to the cascade of events leading ...to neuronal degeneration. Central nervous system infections have been previously suggested as possible etiological agents in the development of sporadic AD. Toxoplasmosis can be associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the possible association between toxoplasma infection and AD.
This study evaluated the serum anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG levels. It included an age-matched and sex-matched study and control groups that consisted of 34 patients with AD and 37 healthy individuals, respectively. There were no difference between the socio economic states of the patients and control subjects. serecm anti-I-gondi IgG levels were measured by using ELISA.
According to the statistical analysis, there were no significant differences among the patients and the control participants with respect to age (68.05±15.98, 62.91±5.89 y, P=0.072; respectively) and sex. The seropositivity rate for anti-T. gondii IgG antibodies among AD patients and control groups were 44.1% and 24.3%, respectively, and there was significant difference between the serum anti-T. gondii IgG levels (P=0.005).
Our findings suggest that toxoplasma infection may be involved in the pathogenetic mechanisms of AD. If confirmed, a positive correlation between toxoplasmosis and AD may lead to new approaches for the management of AD.
Which ureteral stone can pass spontaneously? It is hard to answer this question exactly. The size and location of the stone are the most important predictors. However, there is still a considerable ...gray zone that needs to be clarified. We try to identify the role of stone volume (SV) in the prediction of spontaneous passage (SP).
Seventy-eight patients with a solitary ureteral stone were retrospectively evaluated. Ureter SV measurements were taken in three planes and were calculated using the following formula: V = (X) × (Y) × (Z) × 0.52. SVs, and the longest diameters (LDs) were compared between patients who passed stones spontaneously and those who needed intervention.
The SVs and LDs were significantly lower in patients who passed stones spontaneously than in patients who required intervention (41.2 ± 35.5 vs 128.1 ± 91.1 mm(3), p = 0.001; 5.7 ± 1.8 vs 7.4 ± 1.7 mm, p = 0.001). The optimum cutoff values were 7.0 mm and 52.6 mm(3) for the LD and SV, respectively. For those stones of ≤7 mm, the volumes of the stones that could and could not pass did not differ significantly. However, the volume of the stones >7.0 mm that could pass was significantly higher than of those that could not. SP was 30.6% for stones >7 mm; however, when we removed the stones >52.6 mm(3), SP increased to 75% for stones higher than 7 mm (p = 0.001).
To classify ureteral stones using only one parameter such as stone diameter may lead to heterogeneity within the group. SV may be used in addition to size to determine a more definite homogeneous group to predict SP more precisely.
The prevalence and mortality of sepsis are largely unknown in Turkey, a country with high antibiotic resistance. A national, multicenter, point-prevalence study was conducted to determine the ...prevalence, causative microorganisms, and outcome of sepsis in intensive care units (ICUs) in Turkey.
A total of 132 ICUs from 94 hospitals participated. All patients (aged > 18 years) present at the participating ICUs or admitted for any duration within a 24-h period (08:00 on January 27, 2016 to 08:00 on January 28, 2016) were included. The presence of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), severe sepsis, and septic shock were assessed and documented based on the consensus criteria of the American College of Chest Physicians and Society of Critical Care Medicine (SEPSIS-I) in infected patients. Patients with septic shock were also assessed using the SEPSIS-III definitions. Data regarding demographics, illness severity, comorbidities, microbiology, therapies, length of stay, and outcomes (dead/alive during 30 days) were recorded.
Of the 1499 patients included in the analysis, 237 (15.8%) had infection without SIRS, 163 (10.8%) had infection with SIRS, 260 (17.3%) had severe sepsis without shock, and 203 (13.5%) had septic shock. The mortality rates were higher in patients with severe sepsis (55.7%) and septic shock (70.4%) than those with infection alone (24.8%) and infection + SIRS (31.2%) (p < 0.001). According to SEPSIS-III, 104 (6.9%) patients had septic shock (mortality rate, 75.9%). The respiratory system (71.6%) was the most common site of infection, and Acinetobacter spp. (33.7%) were the most common isolated pathogen. Approximately, 74.9%, 39.1%, and 26.5% of Acinetobacter, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas spp. isolates, respectively, were carbapenem-resistant, which was not associated with a higher mortality risk. Age, acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score at ICU admission, sequential organ failure assessment score on study day, solid organ malignancy, presence of severe sepsis or shock, Candida spp. infection, renal replacement treatment, and a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4 (compared with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2) were independent predictors of mortality in infected patients.
A high prevalence of sepsis and an unacceptably high mortality rate were observed in Turkish ICUs. Although the prevalence of carbapenem resistance was high in Turkish ICUs, it was not associated with a higher risk for mortality.
