The concept of the nation as an imagined community has gained importance in the relevant literature during the last decade. How do we construct national identities in discourse? Which topics, which ...discursive strategies and which linguistic devices are employed to construct national sameness and uniqueness on the one hand, and differences to other national collectives on the other hand? These questions were investigated in our study on the Austrian nation and identity. Taking several current social scientific approaches as our point of departure, we have developed a method of description and analysis of these phenomena which has applications beyond the discursive production of national identity in the specific Austrian example studied. By focusing particularly on the discursive construction of (national) sameness, this study has broken new ground in discourse-historical analysis, which until now has mainly been concerned with the analysis of the discursive construction of difference.

Esto ocurre dentro de una creciente dinámica de movilidad geográfica, social, política y familiar cuyas desigualdades sociales no pueden ya describirse mediante categorías sociológicas comprensivas ni por las “grandes” teorías. Con base en la crítica del concepto de modernización reflexiva y tomando a Austria como ejemplo, tratamos de ilustrar algunas de las estrategias lingüísticas más prominentes empleadas en la construcción de naciones e identidades nacionales.
This article analyses the discursive construction of collective and individual memories and the functions of commemorative events for the discursive construction of national identities through the ...example of Austrian post-war commemorative events. Thus, the various attempts to come to terms with the Nazi past in post-war Austria are illustrated in detail. The article will first summarize the socio-political contexts relating to the relevant post-war commemorative years in Austria (1988, 1995, 2005). Then we will consider sequences of a political speech by the then Austrian chancellor, Dr Wolfgang Schüssel, as one of many possible examples in 2005 which establishes a hegemonic stance towards the Nazi past. Finally, we will discuss our results and illustrate that, in addition to hegemonic discourses, competing narratives aim to provide different answers to the basic question `how should one come to terms with traumatic pasts?' Our results are such that in the hegemonic narrative of Austrian history after 1945, the political event of the Declaration of Independence is represented metaphorically as a `rebirth'; a metaphorical scenario which constructs a `creation myth', and by this anthropomorphization suggests that `newborn' Austria is to be perceived as innocent as a newborn child. On the other hand, the historical events before and after are placed in the cognitive frame of natural disasters or fateful events (`horror', `nightmare', `dark age') and a community of victims is discursively constructed comprising the victims of the Nazi terror as well as the soldiers waging the war of aggression. Discursive patterns apparent in this case study can, of course, be generalized to similar communicative events in many nation-states. The specific systematic and explicit linguistic/pragmatic and discourse-analytic methodology presented in this article lends itself to deconstruct official discourses which influence collective beliefs, opinions and ideologies.
Les récents développements politiques et juridiques en France tendant vers une ratification de la Charte européenne des langues régionales ou minoritaires montrent que la thématique des langues ...minoritaires, bien qu'elle ne soit pas toujours au premier plan, ne perd jamais de son actualité. Le présent ouvrage résulte d'une recherche pluridisciplinaire menée dans le cadre du Groupe de Recherche Interdisciplinaire sur les Langues Minoritaires en Europe (GRILME) et du programme Langues minoritaires et marges linguistiques en Europe, soutenu par le Conseil régional d'Aquitaine. Associant des juristes et des linguistes, tant universitaires que praticiens, ce Groupe de travail a organisé de nombreux séminaires et journées d'études autour d'un but commun : identifier et catégoriser les langues minoritaires en Europe occidentale. C'est à partir de ces rencontres, riches et variées, que le présent ouvrage a été conçu. Cette étude fait apparaître une situation contrastée. Si la tendance à la protection des langues minoritaires est désormais généralisée en Europe occidentale, sous l'impulsion notamment du Conseil de l'Europe, la façon dont elles sont appréhendées et protégées varie grandement d'un espace à l'autre, d'une région à l'autre, en fonction de ('Histoire et de la structuration politique.
Which topics, discursive strategies, and linguistic devices are employed in the construction of national sameness and uniqueness on the one hand and difference to other national collectives on the ...other? This volume examines European discourses of national identity, paying particular attention to Austria. The authors interpret ongoing transformations of the self and the other through a combination of historical theory and methodology and political science. They consider the rhetorical promotion of national identification and the linguistic construction and reproduction of national difference multiple levels within the nation state.
