Instance segmentation is an important method for high-resolution remote sensing images (HRRSIs) analysis. Traditional instance segmentation algorithms are not suitable to analyze complex HRRSIs that ...exhibit: 1) various shapes and sizes of targets; 2) a large number of small targets; and 3) data with long tail distribution. Here we introduce DB-BlendMask, an efficient and accurate instance segmentation method that can accommodate complex HRRSIs. It is composed of size balance coefficient (SBC), class balance module (CBM), and decomposed attention blender module (DA-Blender module). SBC consists of a fair weight allocation strategy for positive samples in object detection. CBM combines classification obtained in object detection stage to guide the semantic feature extraction. Complementary to a traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, DA-Blender module has the ability to considerably compress space complexity of attention and merge attention with semantic feature to generate the instance mask. We compare the performance of DB-BlendMask with a benchmark Mask R-CNN on two typical datasets, iSAID, and ISPRS Postdam. We obtain an average detection precision of 39.2% on iSAID and 63.6% on ISPRS Postdam, which corresponds to an improvement of 2.5% and 2.7%, respectively, compared to the benchmark in a real-time scenario.

Flow pattern of particles and their mixing performance in a Nauta blender were studied using the discrete element method. The model was validated by experimental data obtained in a convective conical ...screw blender and good agreement was obtained. Flow pattern of particles was studied through velocity profiles, granular temperature and streamlines of particles. Effects of sweeping rotation speed, primary rotation speed and impeller diameter on the mixing quality and mixing rate were studied. A vertical circulation pattern in the blender was observed due to the primary rotation of the impeller that produced a convective and layered flow. In this pattern, particles are lifted to the bed surface and then descend at the opposite side of the screw. On the other hand, the sweeping rotation of the impeller pushes the particles along the direction of sweeping which leads to a tangential flow of particles. Combination of primary and sweeping rotations of the impeller results in a three dimensional particle mixing. A semi-stagnant zone is also formed temporarily near the cone axis. It was found that increasing the primary rotation speed (from 5 to 10rad/s) and impeller diameter (from 9.72 to 10.8cm) improve the mixing rate (from 0.02096 to 0.05321/s and from 0.02462 to 0.034651/s, respectively), while increasing the sweeping rotation speed (from 0.15 to 0.45rad/s) decreases the Lacey index and the mixing rate (from 0.04429 to 0.03131/s). To reach a deeper understanding about the effect of sweeping rotation on the mixing behavior, eight different sweeping velocities were studied and the maximum mixing rate was observed at 0.05rad/s.

Microplastics and nanoplastics have secretly entered our daily lives but the extent of the problem is still unclear, as the characterisation is still a challenge, particularly for nanoplastics. ...Herein we test a blender that we use in our kitchen to make juice and we find that a significant amount of microplastics and nanoplastics (∼0.36–0.78 × 109 within 30 s) are released from the plastic container. We advance the characterisation of microplastics and nanoplastics using Raman imaging to generate a scanning spectrum matrix, akin to a hyperspectral matrix, which contains 900 spectra (30 × 30). By mapping these hundreds of spectra as images, with help of algorithms, we can directly visualise the microplastics and nanoplastics with an increased sensitivity from statistical point of view. Raman imaging has a main disadvantage of the imaging resolution, originating from the diffraction of the laser spot, which is proposed to be improved by shrinking the scanning pixel size, zooming in the scanning area to capture details of nanoplastics. Using image re-construction towards deconvolution, the nanoplastics can be effective characterised and the bumpy image of microplastics stemming from the signal variation can be subsequently smoothened to further increase the signal-noise ratio. Overall, the advancements on Raman imaging can provide a suitable approach to characterise microplastics and nanoplastics released in our daily lives, for which we should be cautious.

Powder mixing is an important manufacturing step in many industries. The quality of the end product critically depends on mixing the powders to a specified degree of uniformity. Segregation due to ...particle size has been observed in V-blenders. Vibrations from passive acoustic emissions were measured during rotations of a V- blender using both glass beads and starch granules of different sizes. The vibrations from particle collisions with the V-shell lid, measured by an accelerometer attached to the lid, provided information about particle movement within the V-shell. The vibrations identified “left-right” segregation by 50 rotations, with the smaller particles segregated into the outer arm and the larger particles into the inner arm. This pattern was attributed to a trajectory segregation mechanism. The profile created from the vibrations of the passive acoustic emissions also identified the point at which the mixture becomes stable, which is important in optimizing mixing processes.

Radar simulation offers the potential to generate data cubes with effectiveness and accuracy. However, the radar simulator considering both dense multipaths of indoor environment and dynamic motions ...is rare. This paper develops a versatile channel simulator that can generate frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) waveform multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) signals of indoor scenarios. In the proposed simulation framework, the open-source tool called Blender is utilized to model dynamic scenarios and render animations. Each frame of the animation is rendered into a picture with a defined number of pixels by the ray tracing (RT) engine embedded in Blender. Then, the distance, strength, angle of arrival (AoA), and motion speed of each pixel are calculated based on the traced rays. The sampled beat signal models of the commonly used orthogonal multiplexing MIMO modes are derived in terms of the Blender outputs. A virtual array generation method is utilized to improve the simulation time efficiency. To eliminate the velocity noise, a pixel filtering method is also introduced. For validation, the measurements of the time division multiplexing (TDM) FMCW MIMO sensor in both anechoic chamber and corridor scenario at the mmWave band are compared with the simulation using range, angle, Doppler, and micro-Doppler results. The comparisons show the merits and validation of the proposed simulation method.
The aim of the study is to describe a methodological approach to represent, interpret, model and manage pluristratified archaeological contexts.
The proposed methodology envisages a digital workflow, ...a BIM-thinking strategy, which integrates geometric and texture data obtained from laser and photogrammetric scans with information about construction techniques and materials, archaeological reports and documentation. The integration is based on a balanced combination of open-source and proprietary solutions, allowing professionals to work with their “comfort software” and assuring interoperability through the adoption of Open Standards. Experimentations are being conducted exploring the potential of connecting semantic 3D modelling and virtual reconstructions based on archaeological data made with Blender and the Extended Matrix Tool, with BIM software and capabilities thanks to the BlenderBIM addon.
The proposed workflow, in combination with the described data-sharing-oriented process, adopts a new approach towards 3D models in order to promote a more sustainable mindset towards 3D dataset life-cycle by optimizing their usage and reducing waste on different levels, such as re-documenting the same structure twice.
The expected overall result is the ability to generate semantic models that can enhance our understanding of the context as much as foster multidisciplinary BIM (Building Information Modelling) collaboration thus improving archaeological research, documentation and conservation practices.
