This study draws on psychological temperament theory (a development from psychological type theory) to map the characteristics of 105 Catholic priests serving in Italy, who completed the Francis ...Psychological Type Scales. The data demonstrated a strong preference for the SJ Epimethean Temperament (70.5%), with low representation for the other three temperaments: SP Dionysian Temperament (10.5%), NT Promethean Temperament (10.5%), and NF Apollonian Temperment (8.6%). In their study of religious leadership, Oswald and Kroeger characterised Epimethean priests as "conserving, serving" pastors.
The Vatican. The Inquisition. Contraception. Celibacy. Apparitions and miracles. Plots and scandals. The Catholic Church is seldom out of the news. But what do its one billion adherents really ...believe, and how do they put their beliefs into practice in worship, the family, and society? This down-to-earth account goes back to the early Christian creeds to uncover the roots of modern Catholic thinking. It avoids getting bogged down in theological technicalities, and throws light on aspects of the Church's institutional structure and liturgical practice that even Catholics can find baffling: why go to confession? How are people made saints? What is 'infallible' about the Pope? Topics addressed include:
• scripture and tradition
• sacraments and prayer
• popular piety
• personal and social morality
• reform, mission, and interreligious dialogue
Lawrence Cunningham, a theologian, prize-winning writer and university teacher, provides an overview of Catholicism today which will be indispensable for undergraduates and lay study groups.
Catholic Theology of Marriage in the Era of HIV and AIDS begins with the life experiences of real women, analyzes and unpacks them for the scholarly community, and then offers practical implications ...that translate into guidelines for everyday loci of faith formation.
David Rodriguez, or Padre David as he is known throughout El Salvador, is a diocesan priest who followed the Second Vatican Council's doctrinal mandate to advocate for the poor and oppressed. Along ...with other progressive clergy committed to liberation theology, Padre David helped drive forward the country’s popular movement.
In the 1970s, Padre David joined the largest guerilla organization in El Salvador, the FPL (Popular Liberation Forces). At first, he supported the FPL clandestinely, helping to organize Christian Base Communities, autonomous religious groups dedicated to spreading liberationist ideas and to giving the Salvadoran poor a clear understanding of why their lives were so difficult. By the end of the twelve-year civil war, he was head of the FPL's finance committee. He traveled to the United States, Europe, and across Latin America raising funds for the movement and its resulting political party, the FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front).
In Priest Under Fire , Peter Sánchez tells the story of how one priest joined a movement to help his people and his country. He provides much-needed insight into both the Salvadoran civil war and the Catholic Church-influenced grassroots political movements, showing that they continue to inform Latin America today.
The reach of the Catholic Church is arguably greater than that of any other religion, extending across diverse political, ethnic, class, and cultural boundaries. But what is it about Catholicism that ...resonates so profoundly with followers who live under disparate conditions? What is it, for instance, that binds parishioners in America with those in Mexico? For Joseph M. Palacios, what unites Catholics is a sense of being Catholic—a social imagination that motivates them to promote justice and build a better world. In The Catholic Social Imagination, Palacios gives readers a feeling for what it means to be Catholic and put one’s faith into action. Tracing the practices of a group of parishioners in Oakland, California, and another in Guadalajara, Mexico, Palacios reveals parallels—and contrasts—in the ways these ordinary Catholics receive and act on a church doctrine that emphasizes social justice. Whether they are building a supermarket for the low-income elderly or waging protests to promote school reform, these parishioners provide important insights into the construction of the Catholic social imagination. Throughout, Palacios also offers important new cultural and sociological interpretations of Catholic doctrine on issues such as poverty, civil and human rights, political participation, and the natural law.
Beyond Compare is a remarkable work that offers a commentary on spiritual learning for the twenty-first century rooted in two classic texts from the Hindu and Christian traditions: the Essence of the ...Three Auspicious Mysteries by Sri Vedanta Desika and Treatise on the Love of God by St. Francis de Sales. In his commentary, Clooney achieves multiple goalsùthe book is a contribution to Christian spiritual theology, highlighting for today the beautiful insights into love by St. Francis de Sales (1567-1623), Doctor of the Church. At the same time it points out how even in our world of many religious paths, we can recover and deepen the ancient tradition of loving surrender into God's hands by opening ourselves to the wisdom of India and one of Hindu India's most famous traditions of loving God, explained to us by the south Indian Hindu theologian Sri Vedanta Desika (1268-1369). Clooney goes further, offering a comparative study of these classic works in which he self-consciously writes about the process of reading the two works and the impact this approach has on the reader. The good advice found through this deep engagement with these texts offers a deeper insight into how we can most fruitfully and spiritually think about religious pluralism in the 21st century, remaining open in heart and mind while loyal still to our own tradition. Not merely a book about loving surrender to God, Beyond Compare offers us the opportunity to advance along that path ourselves, learning from the wisdom of St. Francis de Sales and Sri Vedanta Desika, meditating on their two paths together, deepening our own love and willingness to surrender in love to God.
Catholics' Lost Cause argues that the primary goal of clerical leaders in antebellum South Carolina was to unite Catholicism and southern culture to root Catholic institutions into the region.
The dismissal of monasteries raises considerable problems from a legal point of view. It is necessary, therefore, to seek the juridical instruments, both of civil law and of administrative law, ...which, incompliance with the framework provided by canon law, can concretely allow the cultural valorization and reuse of these buildings, succeeding in reconciling the needs of economic feasibility with possible new profane uses, maintaining, where possible, the ownership by the ecclesiastical body. For this reason, in addition to the ordinary instruments of rights in rem (building rights and usufruct) and obligations (lease, rent and loan), it is necessary to better investigate the applicability of other legal instruments, such as the agreements for the valorization of privately owned cultural heritage and the sponsorships referred to, respectively, in articles 113 and 120 of the Italian code of cultural heritage and landscape, as well as the trust, project management and project financing. These instruments could be used, however, under the control of a foundation, around which the various interests represented by the stakeholders could be brought together and reconciled. This is the hope for a “new path of redemption” that could make the former monastery of Vicopelago, the case study examined by the Lucca Summer School, live again towards new social, artistic and cultural uses compatible with its history and the different functions that this asset has been able to assume over the time.

From Fascism to Democracytells the story of the birth of the post-war Italian political system through the lens of a single event: the Italian national election of 1948, the first parliamentary ...election of the Republican era. Robert A. Ventresca offers the first comprehensive analysis of this central topic of contemporary Italian and European history. Bringing together the broad political and diplomatic narrative of 1948 with the social and psychological dimensions that determined how ordinary Italians experienced the election campaign, this book is about much more than just a political event. Broad in scope, it is a story about the fall of Fascism and the achievements of the Italian Resistance, Italian political culture, American influence in Italian politics at the start of the Cold War, and the interaction between Italy's secular and religious traditions. From Fascism to Democracyexpands on the common understanding of what is 'political' to examine how such factors as popular piety, gender, and historical memory became intertwined with the politics of Italy's fledgling democracy.
Abstract
This article explores the hope for unity and reconciliation within the divided Chinese Catholic Church from three aspects: The Second Vatican Council as well as the reformation of the ...Chinese society as an initiative for dialogue; the overlapping membership between the registered church and the unregistered church as a bridge for dialogue; and public theology in Chinese society as a ground for dialogue. Thus, the article concludes that despite the many obstacles in the way of reconciliation, the hope for the Chinese Church to achieve reconciliation with the Chinese government is sure; and, at the same time, the road to unity for the Catholic Church in China is long and full of challenges.
